  1. Davies looks a very good player by our standards ,and probably better than Lenihan. Unfortunately Liverpool are just about the worst club of 92(and yes ill include the dingles) to have to deal with on transfers/players....look what they got for Coutinho?). Honestly though, Id be happy just to get in three defenders aka a reserve goalie, a quality centre-half and a decent right-back/wing-back. Midfielders and forwards are probably a luxury we cant afford at this time.
  2. As a Rovers fan,I can understand the increased attraction of Stanley. They are now in League I(3rd Division)having spent most of their history in League II(4th Division) prior to losing League status in 1962. From 1968 worked their way back up from Lancashire Combination League to current status. Thats a pretty good achievement. Especially when you consider their extremely low budget. What a manager Coleman has been for them. Working with almost nothing every year! (Turbo-charged Gary Bowyer anyone? ) Plus VERY competitive hospitality prices(pie & pint)!
  3. Van Hecke would do as a marquee signing for me.....even if Ben had to go the other way to balance the budget. Sadly hes probably out of our price range. A back-up goalie and another central defender are an absolute pre-requisite. I can live with not scoring a lot if the drawbridge is pulled up tightly. If JDT is insistent on playing entertaining football on our budget AND getting results, then certainly he has his work cut out. Lets give him every encouragement we can.
  4. Have to echo broadswords comment about what a relief it is not to have Mowbray in the dugout. Also what a relief it is that we have NOT appointed one of the old stalwart managers that come across as welded irrevocably to the twentieth(maybe nineteenth )century!! Talk about milking it for all its worth .Hee! Hee! TBF I think JDT has his work cut out getting a competitive squad put together ,but at least most of the players are very young and will be ambitious(? we hope)hence receptive to new ideas.
  5. Like everyone else great news to see such positive appointments in the head coach/DOF area. Bear in mind JDT & Broughton will see this as an opportunity to get nearer to the biggest league of all( Premier League). Only hope Venkys do back them to some extent. It feels like we are back in the modern world at last.......
  6. Big shout out to the supporters who put the banner outside the training ground.....motivational? Tomphil called it correctly for today...cunning Mowbray normally dredges out a victory when in dire need of one.....perhaps thats why hes the longest serving manager in the Championship? Great performance and stunning goals.....anyone think Ben plays a bit like a "ghost" where the ball somehow appears over the line as if by magic following a clumsy run-in despite the best attempts of defenders to stop him? Or is it the red wine talking?
  7. You cant play an unchanged team after 0-7 at home can you? Limited options(no one to replace Nyambe) but on the last performance I can understand the line-up. For once Im in agreement with the players benched. Sometimes its also about attitude. Did Butterworth really "like" one of the Fulham players tweets after Wednesday?
  8. Performance dreadful but the worst performance was from Mowbray being totally unable to set up a team tactically. Supporters who remember our Premier League winning team will remember Mark Atkins was a right-back/right-half who could play at centre-forward(and score!)as he did against QPR and Paul Warhurst could also have played either position(and did,I think). Buckley is a reasonable young player not at their level. We dont look fit or strong enough never mind organised. Insisting on playing promising but more limited players way out of position on a continuing on-going basis as some sort of " low-league Pep" is ridiculous. Ive noticed several players looking to the manager from the playing pitch for instruction and guidance with nothing forthcoming(even more prevalent last season). Fulham targeted Edun because they knew him inside-out as a former player.
  9. Hope to goodness Brereton doesnt leave on a free! That will be a trajedy of epic proportions! Delighted to get the clean sheet as I thought they had become extinct at ewood.
  10. I was also at the game in 1967 when we lost at home to Coventry 1-0 and they got promoted. Ronnie Clayton(our captain at the time)and a member of Englands 1962 World Cup squad(along with Bryan Douglas) played as a makeshift centre-half ..but this game is more disappointing......we must be the League leaders in turning winning positions into draws. Unable to defend a lead ..even with five at the back.
  11. Got to be pleased with two clean sheets in a row. Never expected it under Mowbray so early in the season. Getting rid of all those senior stalwarts has clearly helped. Better team spirit, the lads look to be putting in a shift and we dont have ten players for every midfield position(also happened under Gary Bowyer). Feel more positive about this young team with most players still to make their reputations. But we have rode our luck again. Lets just hope Ayala doesnt get injured}
  12. Maybe : as the longest serving manager with a Championship club a new contract for Mowbray may be "results & financial performance" related. Who knows? Whatever it is the new-found "fight and resolve"from the youngsters is very encouraging and something to get behind and support.
  13. They may not have potted Mowbray cos no one they want will take the job. The fiscal mismanagement is breathtaking. Yes its easy to be critical, but to deliberately waste all available funds on nonsense loans so we have too many players in certain positions is ridiculous. Tie down the saleable assets that you can, with the promise they can go if a big offer comes in. Plan. Instead of blind hope wasting money. Barcelona over a billion in debt(apparently) with injury-prone superstars(?) yet the dingles comfortably solvent.
  14. The most important transfer activity should be a change of manager. If we really are in the financial mess that is reported, why do we need to replace Armstrong? Shouldnt the money be spent in at least tying down Kaminski,Brereton & Rothwell to longer contracts to get a decent fee if they go? In a less than ideal scenario which we have Id chance Nyambe & Lenihan leaving on frees.
  15. Too true! Of course, nobody of the press seems to ask Mowbray sensible questions like that.
  16. Really pleased weve got a lad in who actually wants to play in a Rovers shirt. We must be rivalling Burnley with the number of rejections we are getting currently. However that might work out well as less chance of a bunch of players with an attitude problem, I hope.
  17. Agreed,Brereton is a decent attacking non-goalscoring type of player. For my money,he looked quite at home in the CopaAmericana which I saw on BBC red button comfortable against some of the worlds best players but thats more technique and tippy-tappy. I dont think hes well suited against aggressive bully-boy type of football as purveyed by Morecambe(and our neighbours Burnley)for example. I also agree Carter needs a bit more game time and should start against Millwall. Looked reasonable to me in the defeat(its no picnic when the midfielders dont track back) and Lenihan or Ayala will probably soon be injured, unfortunately.
  18. The best part about last night was Davenport putting his foot in. Think he should be a starter at Millwall!
  19. Yes agreed its just crazy to get vital players injured unnecessarily. We dont want to get into a relegation fight early in the season cos half the team is injured. So play the players we can risk which is very few ,given the threadbare nature of the squad. Pears fills me with dread, but this is as good a game as any to give him experience. Id go Pears - Pike, Carter, Nyambe, Cirino - Garrett, Davenport, Travis - Chapman, Gallagher, Butterworth. A bit harsh on Travis I know, but Im trying to win the match believe it or not!
  20. Considering the money Mowbray has spent(wasted in some cases) he is a worse manager than Gary Bowyer IMHO. Yes he DID get us promoted from League I but he appears now out of his depth at this level. Is it a prerequisite that he ONLY SIGNS injury-prone players? To play tippy-tappy possession football on a quagmire of a pitch is ridiculous. Why he cant concentrate on getting the basics right and play simple football which would suit our players much more I dont know. As a former central-defender his tactics(?) appear ridiculous.....just like they did at Celtic!
  21. Have to say Gary Bowyer was an improvement on Mowbray given the LACK of resources he got, and we did get decent Cup runs under Bowyer. Id take successive 8-0 tonkings in our next two games if it got Mowbray the sack. Unfortunately I dont think it would. Any Ralph Hasenhuttl comparisons are purely coincidental!
  22. Have to agree about goalkeeping standards. When you see Kepa at Chelsea(worlds most expensive?) Im honestly not too worried about Walton. What I am worried about is the players POTENTIALLY LEAVING i.e. might be subject to a cheeky last-day bid from Pemiership relegation fighters! Got to hope there were very few scouts at yestyerdays game. Whats the chances of keeping Armstrong if a cheeky £8 million bid comes in from Bournemouth? Remember they have previous swiping Josh King & Conor Mahoney(even though the latter didnt work out)!
  23. Best performance I can remember since we beat Norwich 7-1 at home with Shearer(2 goals) & Wegerle(2 goals)in 1992. We hit 7 against Sheffield Wednesday in 1997 but I didnt see that game! All credit to the defence for keeping a clean sheet which rarely happens with such a tub-thumping win! This is the sort of scoreline you get with Klopp or Pep as manager!
  24. Cant totally blame Venkys for that,if true,Cherry Blue. Id rest Lenihan as hes a bit injury-prone,and possibly also Armstrong(our only semi-reliable source of goals left)-just in case we get into a relegation dog-fight. Might as well give Samuels a run-out(but I doubt Mowbray will). Id bo:- Leutwiler -Bennett,Tosun,Williams,Bell- Chapman,Travis,Evans,Rothwell-Samuels,Downing. Subs:-Walton,Lenihan,Holtby,Buckley,Smallwood,Johnson,Gallagher. And YES,I would prefer Smallwood to Brereton.Sorry.
  25. From what I remember of Pantilimon in the Premier League(admittedly a while ago & a higher level)I think Id rather stick with Walton. If Dack does leave in the January transfer window Im seriously struggling to think of 3 worse teams than us on current form. Defender Del is nearly the only other goal scorer this season(other than Armstrong)-forget about the £11 million combo of Brereton & Gallagher. Add to that we always seem to concede too many goals and it really doesnt look good.
