Premier League 22-23
Sweaty Gussets replied to chaddyrovers's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
"I could have done with more time, but we've got four games and hopefully I can keep this fabulous club in the Premier League." Big Sam getting his excuses in early! It's a ridiculous situation though. Tough remaining fixtures:- -

I think it's slightly more nuanced than that. Up to about January we would play out from the back and run out of ideas on halfway. It was embarrassing to watch at times and I commented on it on here before Christmas. We now cut through teams quite easily and get to the edge of their box and then run out of idea...or try to walk it in. The improvement in how well we 'play through the lines', to use that awful term, is quite stark. JRC has been a massive part of that improvement because he's very good at dropping into space where a RCM would normally be and spraying passes out wide or playing through the oppositions midfield. Wharton will also become central to that when he finds more consistency. So, I think comparisons with Mowbray's possession football are a long way wide of the mark. The football is much quicker now. If you compare the teams yesterday we were like Barcelona compared to them in the way we moved the ball around. They looked like a pub side in that first half. As for counter-attacking, that's also improved. We'd have never scored the goal at home to Sheff Utd under Mowbray. JDT doesn't get the credit he deserves for the way he's transformed the way the team plays. The fitness levels are also frightening. He knows where the problems are. His constant remarks about missed opportunities and quality in the final third tell you where he knows the team needs to improve. Nothing is certain, but I'm excited about next season. -

Pickering with a gilt edged chance yesterday. Hedges hitting the inside of the post in the cup at Sheff Utd and various other misses. PNE and Cov denying us wins through cheating or bizarre own goals. We've had absolutely no luck and it took a worldie from the greatest side ever to play in the championship 🙂 to beat us. They didn't lay a glove on us besides that. We're a good team, better than any Mowbray team, and that's in his first season in charge. -

The debate was whether we've progressed as a team. We clearly have. We couldn't string a pass together at some points earlier in the season and moves repeatedly broke down on halfway when we ran out of ideas or gave the ball to their attackers. We now get through teams quite easily but as soon as we get in and around the opposition's box if falls apart. The final ball/decision/cross lets us down. If we sign some quality attackers in the summer we'll see if our current failings are personnel or tactics. -

That has been the case on occasion but the Luton game is available to watch again for free on RoversTV. We came at them in waves, we just can't put the ball in the net. The evidence is there. I find the denial of the clear evidence a bit weird (not particularly aimed at you). -

I didn't realise we'd bid for Rosenthal at the same time as Speedie. I also forgotten about Stewart, -

What's that got to do with performances? We were winning more games when we were playing shit. A blind man on a galloping horse can see we've progressed as a team, are playing far better football and dominating matches. -

“Should Ipswich get promotion we know they're going to spend big; we know they've got the resources to do that," Palmer told Football League World. Not well up on ITFC, but they must have some serious investors. -

Results have, performances haven't. We are playing far better than we were early season, it's just that the team, and BBD in particular, have stopped scoring. Just like BBD, and the team, did last season. And guess what, we still have the same personnel. That is Mowbray's legacy. -

What was clear from the opening 45 minutes yesterday is that even the best teams in the league can't cope with us when we pass the ball quickly. Our movement is excellent and drags the opposition where they don't wat to go. We also smothered Luton when they had the ball, which resulted in them giving us the ball back. As Mark Robins also said about us, we are the best pressing team in the league. If only we had presence in the opposition's box. I wasn't keen on JDT before Christmas, I though the football sterile. But we've made huge advances since then. JDT leaving would be a disaster. -

He walked from Malmo...depends on the clauses in his current contract. It might stipulate he can't take another job for a year if he quits Rovers? I have no idea if he will walk, it's just there's enough speculation to suggest he and GB may have had a falling out. If true, he may think his position untenable. It may just all be bollocks though. We'll find out soon enough. -

JDT said we'd be in the 'frees and loans' market this summer. Who knows if that's true or not. Nixon says the same shite about cutbacks every season. -

I'm slightly more hopeful! I'd be surprised if at least 2 wingers haven't been lined up, because we can't rely on Hedges or Dolan (although they are useful squad players). Two strikers are also needed. JDT will know all that. My fear is JDT will walk because of what went on in January, and the subsequent falll-out. I think if he stays it's because he knows he's going to get the backing he needs.
