I used to get really bent out of shape with refereeing decisions , off sides , cards etc. I don’t anymore. There’s no logic or common sense to any of it. I just take the rough with the smooth. In 50 years I’ve only honestly seen a couple of games in both codes were I thought there might have been something going on.

I don’t think “ accidental “ and “ common sense “ comes into it anymore. My rugby league team had a similar incident last weekend. Our opponents winger is running at our winger, he tries to sidestep, looses his footing and slips over. Our guy was making the tackle around the waist/chest area. As a result of the slip he grabs the guy higher than he wanted to. Complete accident, nobody hurt etc. The very young “ elite path “ referee gives a penalty “ contact with an opponents head “. No common sense involved - thems the rules. One of our other guys has a word with the ref and gets 10 minutes in the sin bin for his trouble. They score 2 converted tries while he’s off and the game has gone.

It’s the same in Rugby League. The common denominator - SKY TV and Sky Money.

Another issue is the position he plays. If you’re winning you don’t normally want to swap your centre halves unless it’s around 4-0 or 5-0 and if you’re losing you normally want to sub attacking players. It’s hard to give a young centre half 10 or 15 minutes.
