Personally I'd rather he went to non-league before signing for Newcastle. As good as I think Wharton could be, I assume they would have their sights set higher than Wharton. As you say FFP might scupper that anyway, as they are (supposedly) on the limit (although looks like they are selling Almerion to a Saudi Arabian team) I think Palace are trying to get this tied up before other clubs come in, like Newcastle etc. If he signs for Palace, as crap as it sounds, he could use them as a springboard to a bigger club.

Not sure about that. According to the Palace forums (as someone posted above) they've been tracking him for some time, talking to his family, him, his agent selling the move to him. They wouldn't be bidding if there wasn't interest in the move from Wharton's side. Also, he goes to Palace, finds his feet in the premier league, much less pressure than if he joined Spurs, Utd, Chelsea, Newcastle etc. He gets settled into the league and moves on from Palace further down the line. All the while he develops at a better club and gets paid a lot more. It's a borderline no brainer.

Undoubtedly Palace put the feelers out to his agent, I think Wharton (and probably more so his agent) would be mad to not at least speak to Palace and see what's on offer. It's Premier League football and a life changing salary.

Is there any world whatsoever where Venkys would sanction spending 85% of the recieved fee? Seems incredibly unlikely.

Going to be interesting to see what happens next. It's likely we would always reject any reasonable opening bid and fire some demands back to them. Our league position/form has probably added to this, flogging Wharton with little time left to draft in some replacements would be suicidal. Palace might very well come back with an increased offer and maybe a player on loan (not Wharton) could get interesting and I could see him leaving if Palace push enough.

If Wharton goes to Palace, this will be the first, and only test required of the "new system"/project (Whatever we're calling it). The idea of this new regime is surely to sell players and reinvest a chunk of that money into better players, save some money back for running costs sure, but a chunk should be reinvested. If we sell him and sign a couple of players for £100k from league 2, the protest thread need some serious hammer as they will be well and truly trying to pull the wool over our eyes. I've been dreading a big sale like this (should it happen) as we'll know once and for all what the priority for the owners is. Pocketing cash or trying to improve Blackburn Rovers. History tells us it's likely to be pocketing the cash.

I suspect the club would prefer a lesser upfront fee, with the deal stacked in future add ons/sell on clauses. We get a good chunk now but then a few additional payments over the next few years to aid with future cashflow etc.

Yeah I know they won't reinvest the money, just curious as to how much less our incompetent owners would have to put in next time.
