"Throwing it in the net" is an expression often used to describe goalkeeping mistakes. It's not meant to be taken literally. I'm surprised this has to be explained

And in the meantime we have to suffer his costly mistakes and errors. We lost out on the play-offs last year on goal difference and how many points were thrown away through goalkeeping mistakes? The point is, I'm tired of watching a succession of Rovers "in progress" goalkeepers when there are experienced, perfectly good finished articles around at lower levels of the game who we could have signed and who don't make crass blunders week after week. I was right behind the goal when Wahlstedt threw one in the net at Millwall a few weeks ago and (apart from perhaps Ray Clemence v Scotland and one of two others I recall) in 60 plus years of watching I've never seen anything like it in the pro game.

As it stands, and without any changes at the club with regards to ambitions and recruitment of players, I just cannot see him staying beyond this season. And why would he? He's young and ambitious and wants to coach at the highest level - which he now knows he's highly unlikely to achieve at Ewood Park

Szmodics has become one of Rovers' most important players, so all credit to him after a difficult first season in the Championship when he often looked lost and out of his depth. I remember an early 3-0 defeat at Reading where he wandered around and hardly touched the ball. I didn't rate him at all. His 2nd goal against Norwich was the more difficult of the two I thought, many players would have made a mess of that chance. He does the simple things well, rarely gives the ball away and has an eye for goal which is just as well as we're not blessed with many goalscorers. Fingers crossed he stays fit.

Comparing Wahlstedt to Friedel, ho hum. It’s like marrying a plain girl and hoping she’ll turn into Sophia Loren. Friedel was for sure a late developer and so it appears is Steele at Brighton after being worse than useless at Rovers but I just don’t see it with this guy. Hope I’m wrong of course but it will be “fun” watching him fumble and flap and cost us numerous points over the next few years on his way to the goalkeeping summit.

So we have the prospect of facing Preston with no recognised central defenders, a reshuffled and makeshift defence with players playing out of position, and a "flapper" goalkeeper (copywright Chris Sutton) who gives away goals at regular intervals Plus a forward line with no recognised centre forward What could possibly go wrong? Bad news that - he holds the team together

Steele is the big surprise for me. At the time he ranked alongside Barton, Fettis and a few others as one of the worst goalkeepers I'd seen in a Rovers shirt. Awful. I still find it hard to believe he's now a first team regular at a ambitious club like Brighton - testament to their coaching maybe or the poor management at BRFC.

That’s like a golfer who can drive well but always three putts. Dealing with crosses is one of the basics of goalkeeping and Wahlstadt’s “weakness” on crosses makes him a liability at present I find it staggering that Kaminski apart we’ve had a succession of frankly rubbish goalkeepers who’ve cost us numerous points and victories in recent seasons and that we cannot find a steady, experienced goalkeeper in the lower divisions. I’m not asking for brilliance here, just a solid old pro who knows what he’s doing and not yet another “work in progress” keeper who may or may not come good but in the meantime causes thousands of fans to be tearing their hair out at the glaring errors week after week

A bigger worry than the goalkeeper and Wharton sending off is the potential absence of JRC. With the way we play under Tomasson he has developed into a key player and we play so much better when he's in the team and on form. Fingers crossed his injury isn't serious but the way he limped down the tunnel didn't look good

Wahlstedt isn't a 19 or 20-year old learning the pro game. He's 24, at the age when most goalkeepers have progressed to the point where they are confident in their game and their ability. Wahlstedt looks a bundle of nerves and potential errors to me and at that age should be much better than he is. There must be some solid, experienced keepers around the 30 mark who do the basics right playing in the lower leagues that we could sign. Any would be better than our present 2 dodgy incumbents Preston will have taken note today and I expect them to pile in the crosses at every opportunity when we play them.
