mickbrown Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 You think Beattie likes the ball to feet, where he can turn and run at defenders? No way Jose. He's a big, strong target man with little skill. A kind of poor man's Kevin Davis. Beattie can finish, Davies cannot.

American Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 Beattie can finish, Davies cannot. 124 goals in 380 appearances means he can finish? I'd hate to see his strike rate if he couldn't....
den Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 .....which is how we tried to play Roberts. Corrected your spelling too. By your arguments then, every striker we have plays like Beattie. Daft argument Mellison. Tell me the strengths of Beattie?
mickbrown Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 124 goals in 380 appearances means he can finish? I'd hate to see his strike rate if he couldn't.... Compared to Davies(49/227 for Bolton) he is a goal machine.....
Iceman Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 Carrol to Stoke, Roberts to Newcastle and Beattie to Rovers.
mellison24 Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 By your arguments then, every striker we have plays like Beattie. Daft argument Mellison. Tell me the strengths of Beattie? We haven't tried to play Benni or Kalinic as a Target Man at all! Don't twist my words. We played hit and hope, whereas 'target man' is hit to a specific player. As I have said: Beattie is a ready-made replacement for Roberts who will work a little bit harder. that is an improvement on the weakest striker in our squad. Of course I hope other additions can be made, but don't try and imply (you haven't yet, but you inevitably will given your record on here) that I think beattie is a world-beater. I think (meaning it's my OPINION) he's better than our weakest striker and therefore I'm all for signing him.
joey_big_nose Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 124 goals in 380 appearances means he can finish? I'd hate to see his strike rate if he couldn't.... Um, I don't know what crack your smoking but 1 goal in 3 games over a ten year+ career is pretty bloody good. A very small percentage of strikers can beat that.

deftangel Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 I would rather have Beattie than Roberts. It such a deal could be done with virtually no expenditure then I would back it. However, if we're going to be upgrading positions, I'd rather we did it in midfield. O'Hara wouldn't have been a bad shout sadly.

O'Hara is a decent lad, lively and committed, wouldnt mind him at all!!
alexanders Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 MIght be something in here: Kenwyne Jones to Stoke - Beattie to Rovers maybe Chamakh to Sunderland? Beattie to Rovers?
Iceman Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 I wouldnt pay 2.5mill for Beattie. I would prefer him over Roberts, but not for that fee. Creative midfielder please Sam!
koi Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 I can't decide on Beattie. My head says STAY AWAY; I know what he's like off the pitch and he's not the sort of person I'd like to be taking a large salary off my club. But my heart says there might be something there. I've always thought he showed some signs of being a top player but has never really tried, maybe he'd do it for his own club?? But as we all know your head is rarely wrong!
sam_rovers Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 yes first Kevin Davies, now James Beattie... ###### fantastic... i hope we get linked to yuri djorkaeff
JAL Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 MIght be something in here: Kenwyne Jones to Stoke - Beattie to Rovers maybe Chamakh to Sunderland? Beattie to Rovers? Absolutely shocking, depressing, negative read that is - if true, up yours Rovers you numpties!
Iceman Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 We will be numpties, if we pay 2.5mill for Beattie.
JAL Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 We will be numpties, if we pay 2.5mill for Beattie. Dont forget to factor in his £1.5 to possibly £2m a year wages for a lad who wasnt good enough ten years ago. Looks like Rovers have well and truly lost their way.

Anyway, to label Roberts as a bit of a non tryer is off target too. Lack of quality definately, but non tryer? No.
BRFC1995 Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 to big up the signing of a striker past his best by a distance that even the stokes of this world won't miss is exceptionally depressing. He's an older di santo without the pace and unfortunately about as many goals in him, save 2.5m and stick samba up top. stick to shopping in the french leagues got to be the striking equivilent of a givet or n'zonzi calibre bargain there somewhere.
John Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 He has maybe looked a bit deflated recently, but Roberts usually puts a decent shift in.

Looks like Rovers have well and truly lost their way. JAL you're great, I love the way you absolutely go off your rocker, no messing about. A bit premature to be honest! 1) It's just speculation at present 2) Even if there is some truth in the story, there is absolutely no chance we are going to pay 2.5m for a 31 year old striker who is out of favour at his club, especially when we current have 0 pounds to spend. My guess is we will buy for whatever roughly we sell Roberts for. Probably around a million? If it even happens at all. The one scenrio which would scare me would be selling Benni for 2.5m and bringing in Beattie for the same, but I just can't see that happening. It is too ridiculous.

BuckyRover Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 Diouf, Davies (I know we didn't sign him), Chimbonda (he seems a like a good signing) and now Beattie. Does Sam actually hate me? He seems to make a point of trying to sign people I really don't like
