Damien Duff interview
LeftWinger replied to Bigdoggsteel's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Just had a look and we got 22.5m for Dunn and Duff that summer (I'd forgotten they both left the same summer). Brought in: Emerton 2.5m - Great success Amoruso 1.4m - Did OK Reid 2.5m - Good signing eventually Gresko 1.2m - Did OK Yeldell FREE - Was never intended as a first team signing and proved as much Ferguson 7.5m - Flop So in summary, we would have been better keeping hold of Dunn and Duff. -

Damien Duff interview

I'm sure at the time I remember hearing Duff wanted us to match the wages Chelsea were offering and he would have stayed, but Souness wanted the woman to strengthen the squad. -
Mowbray: Stay or Go - A Poll
LeftWinger replied to Stuart's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
I personally think it's time to roll the dice and change manager - we're going to stagnate in the middle of the Championship and continuing to lose money under Tony. However, a lot of people blame him for the signings of Brereton and Gallagher. Did he actually choose these players and negotiate the fee? I certainly don't think he will have negotiated the fee and I even question whether he selected the players. I know for a fact that Waggot was bemused as to why the signing of Gallagher didn't shift season tickets (this has come from within the club), as an expensive striker returning to the club. Maybe he was more involved in selecting transfer targets, I don't know. My biggest problem with Tony is his overly cautious approach. When we go for it and select a more bold team, we seem to get better results. He also has his favourites like Bennett and is quite happy to pick on the younger players (see Raya/Nyambe, even Brereton recently). Plus his liking for a striker on the wing is mystifying. -

Championship season 2019-20

I put BBC sport on and saw it was Wigan 7 Hull 0 at half time and I genuinely thought I'd missed the Rugby season restarting until I read it properly. -
The Riverside Stand Renovation Thread
LeftWinger replied to a topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
You could get close to a stand that size, even with the river (looking at google earth). The front of the stand would obviously be much closer to the pitch than the current stand, just like on the opposite side. There may be limited room behind the stand for the turnstiles, but you could potentially have these underneath the stand like at Old Trafford. Old Trafford also goes very close to a river in one corner. Though for the record I don't know why we would increase the stadium capacity when we don't get near filling it currently. -
Berkovic played 11 games for us, compared to Beckham playing 5 for them. Maybe the Baggio Bar would be a better shout. Although he did play 9 games for us, so maybe too many ?

Brereton's at 100 club appearances now in his career - with 10 goals (2 penalties). 54 of them were starts as well. 4 of his goals have come in the 89th minute or later. Maybe he's just one to bring off the bench with a couple of minutes to go.

Wow! That makes me feel old!!!! -
Just noticed that Ben has now made 100 club career appearances - scoring 10 times. 54 of those were starts as well before anyone suggest they are mainly sub appearances. ?

Mowbray: Stay or Go - A Poll
LeftWinger replied to Stuart's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
I wouldn't go for Gerrard, but Mowbray's record at Celtic was poor. Mowbray P45 W23 D9 L13 Gerrard P113 W68 D27 L18 So Gerrard has a 60.2% win percentage vs Mowbray with 51.1% at Celtic. Mowbray lost 28.9% of his games with Celtic, which is pretty alarming in a country with only 2 decent teams. -

Rovers Rewind: Rovers vs Barca (June 10, 2020 @ 7pm)
LeftWinger replied to Amo's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
I'd bought a Barcelona top before the game and went outside the players entrance after the game to try and get some players to sign it. All their players just got straight on the coach and didn't stop at all to interact with the fans - apart from one - Marc Overmars. He stopped and got his match shirt out of his bag and gave it to a little kid in front of me. Class act. -
We were 4-0 up when he came on against Wednesday and scored 1 more goal. He came on against Sheffield United when we were 2-0 down and we scored once. Other than that, we've only scored 1 more goal when he's been on the pitch. My point being he can't have set up a goal and hand in another - as we've never scored twice in a game with him on the pitch. I've not been impressed at all by him personally. I remember the Fulham game where he was completely ineffectual, playing in the number 10 role. Worse than that, he didn't seem to put himself about much or get stuck in, which you'd usually expect from someone who has been involved in the youth set up since he was about 14 (I think that was roughly the age when he joined us).

I'm a fan of both of those kits to be fair. Newcastle had some good kits around that time. -
Leicester Play Off Final
LeftWinger replied to Exiled in Toronto's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Whilst he was very, very good - he only scored 7 at Ewood in the league that season. I'd never put him on a level with Shearer in regards to how many I'd expect him to score in a game. -
Marshall told BBC News 24: "I feel that we have a clause that says if anyone offers £5m they can speak to the player. "We were given permission to speak to Blackburn Rovers on Monday at apparantly a price of £6.75m. I'm absolutely staggered at that. Obviously his agent knew this clause existed, why didn't we? Unless it was a deliberate ploy to try and price him out of moves to Villa or Newcastle.

He scored 34 goals in 3 seasons for Rovers (00/01 in Division 1; 01/02 & 02/03 in the Premier League) - in 124 appearances - 0.274 goals per game. In the subsequent 8 seasons after leaving he scored 10 goals in 140 appearances at 0.07 goals per game (7.5 seasons in the Premier League and 0.5 seasons in the Championship). He then had a good season in 09/10 scoring 10 goals in 28 games - but other than that his goal output really dropped. I remember the promotion season in division one with Jansen, Duff and Dunn as the crown jewels. He was outstanding that season. He had everything other than pace. He could score with both feet, his head, technically excellent, eye for a pass, great dribbler. He carried that on when we got back up to the Premier League as well. I remember him telling a story how he was supposed to be going out for James Beattie's birthday after we had played Southampton away. We lost the game and Dunny went to a hotel to get ready for a night out. He looked at his phone and had a load of messages/missed calls off team mates, basically telling him to switch his phone off as Souness was after him. So he did just that. He got ready for his night out and as he was walking out the front of the hotel, the team coach was waiting for him. He was made to get on and drive back with the rest of the lads, as Souness had decided they all needed to go into training the next day. Half way home, the coach pulls over and Souness gets out and gets in a separate vehicle. Then Tony Parkes tells everyone on the coach they aren't in for training in the morning. Dunny knew his time at Rovers was up at that point.

I actually liked Gillespie. A proper old school winger. On his day (unfortunately not consistently enough), he was one of the most exciting players in the country for me. Out and out pace and ability to beat his man. I just think off the field issues stopped him being a real star.
-
I'm amazed Dunn's name has only been fleetingly mentioned a couple of times on here. I remember seeing him and Tugay against Lampard and Petit for Chelsea and thinking I'd much rather have our two. Dunn was thought of as the new Gascoigne at one stage. I remember him scoring a cracking goal for England U21's (possibly against Holland) and being raved about by the national media. He obviously did have injury problems, but I think he could have been top, top level. Should have had a long England career - he was that good.

I make it just over £40m spent ? Corbett 525k Davies 7.5m Perez 3m Peacock FREE Daily 5.3m Konde 0.5m Blake 4.25m Gillespie 2.35m Ward 4.5m Jansen 4.1m McAteer 4m McNamee 300k O'Brien 300k Carsley 3.4m TOTAL: £40.025m Some absolutely terrible signings there. Jansen the only real success. You could argue Blake, Gillespie, McAteer and Carsley had some kind of impact after we went down, but none of them 'successes' particularly. 1.625m spent on Corbett, Konde, McNamee and O'Brien - did they make any starts in league games? £40m was a hell of a lot of money at the time. To put it in perspective, Arsenal spent £12.5m in the same time period (albeit on some shockers other than Ljunberg at £3m) Man United spent 27.75m - but got Stam for 10.75m and Yorke for 12.6m. I think a picture of what went wrong is quickly emerging ?

We were even 3rd with 11 games to go the season before - then it all went a bit wrong. We almost did a 'Reverse Leicester'
