  1. That’s the difference between the good players and the also-rans. They can think rationally in the heat of the moment. “ Correct decision making at speed under pressure is what makes the top players what they are “.
  2. A pal of mine always left 5 minutes before the end at the Rugby League. No matter what the score was. It could be the closest game you ever saw and he’d be gone. “ I need to beat the traffic “ he told me. This was when we were getting 2,000 gates !
  3. The Action - I’ll Keep On Holding On
  4. When you’re brain dead you’ve no chance as a footballer. I still haven’t got over that pass at Rotherham last season. The sort of the thing you see in an under 15 game.
  5. I had to sit through “ Wolf “ whilst we were out in Spain. Absolute drivel but Mrs Shoelaces liked it.
  6. Lesley Gore - You Don’t Own Me
  7. I’ve seen every Rovers side since 1960 and I know which one was my favourite.
  8. Not a gig as such but “ The Story Of The Jam “ “ About The Young Idea “ is on Sky Arts at 2-10 am tomorrow morning.
  9. Boston - More Than A Feeling
  10. I used to wait on the half way line on the Riverside terrace before the game. I’d go to what ever end we were attacking once the teams had lined up. At half time I’d make my way to the other end. If you didn’t go looking for trouble you rarely saw any. Liverpool had there own method - I remember them leaving the Blackburn end en masse by climbing over the wall and and just marching right down the pitch to the Darwen End at half time ! It was like a scene from “ Zulu “.
  11. When Fred was on song he was every bit as good as Shearer.
  12. You must be on that photo of Fred Pickering celebrating somewhere Jim. Get your magnifying glass out.
  13. I was stood behind the goals at the Darwen End First Half. I migrated to behind the goals at Blackburn End second half. Birds Eye view of Andy Mac racing through to slot in his four goals.
  14. Parky was ok but I can’t stand chat shows.
  15. Our goal was the first league goal scored that season. A pen after about 3 mins in the opening game.
  16. He did. A shot from distance, all along the the ground. I think Fred Else thought it was going wide.
  17. The Rolling Stones - I Wanna Be Your Man
  18. They played on Boxing Day morning so not many would have travelled down from Blackburn. I was at the Burnley v Man Utd game later that day when I heard the score. I didn’t even know we were playing in the morning ! No instant communications in those days. I went to the return fixture at Ewood a couple of days later. Least said about that the better !
  19. Didn’t they try this sort of thing in Columbia in the 1950’s ? Alfredo DeStefano was one of the players to go there. Several England internationals went too but were then banned by the FA. A publican I knew in later life was a referee over here and he went to ref in the games there. He told me he carried a revolver with him everywhere he went in Columbia ! I don’t think it lasted long, although the organisers were rich, they weren’t as wealthy as the lot running this league.
  20. Best Rovers team performance I ever saw and the best individual performance from a Rovers player in Bryan Douglas. For young fans who can’t remember how good that Spurs team was - it would be like beating the current Man City team 7-2.
  21. I think that game finished Danny Blanchflower. He was trailing in Dougie’s wake all the game. It wasn’t long before Spurs went out and bought Alan Mullery to replace him. The story was at the time that after the game Bill Nicholson, the Spurs manager, said to the Rovers directors - “ Name your price for Douglas “. Allegedly there were prepared to break the British transfer record to sign him.
