I always thought he was worth a goal start. I never went into a game thinking we were going to lose when he was in goal for us.

When I saw him play he looked a real handful but 3 goals in 61 games says he’s not a finisher.

My grandson came around to see me in the shirt I bought for him. It looks a really good shirt.

I remember reading the autobiography of a one time England forward. Might have been Bobby Smith of Spurs. He said he was fine towards the end of the season at the tail end of his career and a couple of months later in the new season he knew he was ” gone “. It was that sudden.

I don’t know how anyone can watch that game last night and say we have better players. Our close control and passing was shown up last night. I lost count of how many times an England player tried to control the ball only to see it bounce 2 or 3 yards away.

The only time we’ve looked good recently was when Wharton came on to partner Rice. What was it 38 out of 38 completed passes ? Last night half of our passes went astray.

The point I’m making is the number of kids playing football in the UK is massively less than it was years. It’s like a pyramid, the bigger the base the more chance you have of really good players getting to the top.

It was crying out for Wharton and he never got a kick. I like Rice a lot but he’s been really poor all through this tournament . Another one being picked game in game out in the hope that something changes. As for Harry Kane, there used to be a player in my works team that had a bad back. Honest truth, he used to play in a corset ! We all used to rib him mercilessly when he was putting it on. Kane reminded me of him last night. He couldn’t get his feet off the ground ! We were long balling it and every one was a free header for the Spanish centre halves. As somebody on the panel said - they’ve got the cigars out and they’re sat in the arm chairs.

Probably the best of the lot, Pedri, wasn’t even playing. We usually go out to rural Spain in summer and our village has an 3/4 size artificial pitch. There are always kids on it playing football all year round. To be honest there’s nothing else for them to do. Just like it was for us back in the day of 2 TV channels. But practice makes perfect. The more you play the better you get. And the cream rises to the top. Where I live in Rochdale we face a huge common. Back in the day it was full of kids playing football. Over the last ten or fifteen years it’s had groups of Asian heritage kids usually playing cricket. Even in winter if it’s fine ! Funnily enough there’s been no cricket this year. They are playing football all the time now.

Plus they had the likes of Alan Ball and Geoff Hurst who put in World class performances on the day when it mattered. What we needed from Foden and Bellingham last night.

Yes their wingers made the pitch very big when they had the ball yet still got inside regularly to threaten our goal. Does that mean wingers will be coming back into fashion. I hope so.

That’s a good point. Do people really enjoy watching England play against decent sides ? I know I don’t. I end up shouting at the TV. I was doing a lot of shouting in that second half. Our ball retention was ale house team level. We can flatten the little teams but when we come up against the good teams we look lost.

Kane has had a great career but tonight he was beyond bad. That was a Gallagheresque performance. Totally ineffectual. He should have been off at half time.

Eddie Howe will be in the frame. If they stay with Southgate they want their heads feeling.

It tells me a lot about the Prem. A lot of those players ( Rice, Saka, Foden etc ) dominate games at that level but look distinctly average at international level.

Playing like we did tonight I’d rather we didn’t. That was embarrassing. We looked like a pub team for a big chunk of the game. Their pressing exposed our lack of technique. Our wingers come inside all night long, theirs get around the side of teams.

He should have gone after the last Euro Final. We’ve just wasted three years.

I said to my son at half time he’ll make the subs when we go a goal down. It crossed my mind that Wharton would have at least put some clever passes through. We’ll never know now.

Pickford played well as a keeper but his distribution of the ball was awful. The game was lost in midfield. None of them played up to par. A comp too soon for Foden, Mainoo, Saka, Bellingham etc. They all want to hold onto the ball instead of just passing it like Spain did. Why Kane played is a complete mystery. He looked like me when I had disc problems. Taxi for Southgate I think.

We played for about five minutes. The rest of it was bobbins. We were embarrassed by a team that could pass and move.
