I would have thought though John that cash flow was at its strongest at this time of year through season ticket sales. There could the money from be up to 10,000 supporters flowing into the coffers. I don't really believe that there is too much evidence of saving money by buying late in the window. Last year we signed Armstrong and Rothwell for what I believed were realistic prices but in my opinion we massively overpaid for Brereton in what appeared to be a panic buy. It's an aspect of any transfer window that I've never understood when the majority of clubs leave trading until the last knockings and run the risk of being held to ransom or indeed missing out on players who could make a real difference. This summer's case in point being Raya. Sold for decent money a few weeks ago and now with two weeks to go we haven't signed a replacement. If I was the agent of any prospective replacement for Raya I would be asking for silly money knowing that we are getting desperate.

But there wasn't a problem last year John when we bought Rothwell, Armstrong and Brereton. The vast majority of transfers are settled with staged payments so the reality is that it is likely we have had to pay instalments for the aforementioned between the end of the season and start of the new one.

All eventualities have to be covered and the obvious thing to do was bring a replacement in then sell him. He was under contract and would have had to abide by that. I don't rate Raya and think we can do better but starting with Leutwiler is a backwards step for me

I wouldn't normally comment on kits as I can't usually get worked up either way but that is abhorrent. There is no contrast with the colours and the bits of the Umbro diamond just demean the whole thing. If anybody connected with Rovers has sanctioned that then they should be accountable and explain the rationale behind such an obscene garment. Waggott et al should be questioned at a Fans Forum to find out why our club is forced to play in something that frankly is disgusting. I think Umbro will deservedly catch a cold with sales of these.

How will we replace Grahams goals and hold up play? In my opinion it's another frustrating aspect of Mowbray where he complicates things by (his own admission) over thinking. Half of our squad couldn't pass water and he wants to turn us into a total footballing team. Nearly everybody could see our major weakness last season and he appears to be overlooking this now in favour of a major change in playing style. In my book it's madness.

I have said many times a player is only worth what somebody will pay for him. If we were prepared to pay the alleged £5m and think it represents value that's fine but to compare that to what Zohore went for isn't comparing like for like to me.

Bruce has resigned as Sheffield Wednesday manager and is expected to be named as Newcastle manager later this week. It's another Newcastle managerial appointment that looks destined to end in tears. Newcastle will be Bruce's eleventh job in around twenty years and ten of them years were spent at two clubs (Hull and Birmingham). Wednesday are the third club he has resigned from in less than a year.

Although I felt he had run his course with us I have an admiration for Conway as he could have taken up Mowbrays offer of another year and lived in Easy Street for twelve months. Bolton would be handy for him as he lives on Buckshaw and hopefully he can get a decent deal for himself.

Broadly speaking you are correct and lots of clubs now use one or some of the many sotware programmes available. Accrington use a system for scouting future opponents and have pretty much dispensed with their smallish network of scouts. I'd be disappointed if Rovers weren't buying into technology like this. Of course there is nothing like watching players live but just to get a handle on strengths and weaknesses these systems are informative.

I agree with that. I only saw him post Coyle and I thought he was underwhelming and I have a memory of Mowbray benching him (although I could be wrong). He was immense at Brentford though.

The four year deal probably indicates we are paying for him over the length of his contract (as Madon alluded to recently). On the face of it a decent signing.

Thanks. No sign of Williams or Bell yet. Williams missed the Austria trip as his wife was expecting but I haven't seen him on any of the photographs from pre season at Brockhall yet. Mysterious. Hopefully playing Hart for 90 minutes isn't a prelude to him starting on August 3rd.

If we are genuinely interested we should get the deal done now. It's been a real source of frustration nearly every window to be strongly linked to good players who would improve us only to miss out. The season starts in three weeks and historically Mowbray has been reluctant to throw new signings in but integrate them into the squad and his way of working and playing. If we haven't signed a centre half by next Saturday I can see us starting with pretty much the back four that was our Achilles Heel last season.
