Nicko McBrain retired as drummer from Maiden this weekend after 40 years, playing his last gig in Brazil.

He suffered a minor stroke back in January. He was still able to tour this summer onwards, but admitted he had to adapt and simplify some of the more complicated numbers. At 72 years old, he’s a bit older than the rest of the band so it looks like he’s gone out on his own terms. Bruce made a point that he has only retired from ‘live’ performances, so will possibly still feature on future album releases.

Simon Dawson takes over, drummer from Steve Harris ‘other’ band British Lion.

Have maiden released anything new since seventh son?

The problem with Maiden is many people got turned off with the quality of No Prayer for the Dying, Fear of the Dark and the Dickinson exit in the 90s. Therefore they have no appreciation of how good the 21st century renaissance was, albeit with a slightly more drawn-out proggy sound.

A 21st Century Maiden album sounds tolerable if you play it at 2x speed, or edit it so as to remove the first two minutes off all the songs.

Give me Priest or Saxon.

😀 I take the point. There are way too many songs with slow drawn-out intros. The short, sharp "radio-friendly" songs have largely gone. The person that likes the The Trooper and Run to the Hills but doesn't appreciate Revelations or Seventh Son isn't going to be too fond of the 21st century albums. However there's still tons of great stuff on the later albums.

Saxon have always been good and are also in a bit of a renaissance period. I think the last two albums have been very strong, and they were great at King Georges Hall a few years back.

I've never really got into Priest at all. I must be missing something.

Definitely worth a mention with Garth sadly passing away this week, the final member of The Band actually ensures that the Band are back together.

Their version of Forever Young with Bob Dylan on The Last Waltz is one of my Desert Island discs. Utterly wonderful group.

Off to see what will hopefully be two belting gigs in Glasgow over the next few days from two 90s bands. Ocean Colour Scene tomorrow (supported by Kula Shaker) and then Shack on 1st May. Mick Head is having a career renaissance with his current project so I was surprised to see that Shack had reformed for a short tour.

Well I’m out for Easter lunch and I’ve just been told I’m sat next to the base player for Arctic Monkeys, more to follow, once I make friends 🤣

He’s going to hear about VENKYS OUT

No footy or music chatter, but what a nice family, they’ve just had a new born baby. Great afternoon for Easter lunch.

Going to see Pulp in Birmingham in June. They were brilliant in Bridlington two years ago.

Last time I saw Pulp was on the ‘farewell tour’ in Sheffield. The place was full of middle-aged tossers, chattering throughout the gig, but singing loudly during ‘Common People’…..the irony wasn’t lost on us….

Im going to ‘Tramlines’ on the Friday, Pulp are headlining, I’m hoping for a much better audience!

Seems to be a lot of gobshites like that at gigs these days. Don't understand it myself, if you want to drink and chat to your mates all night just go to the pub, or at least skulk around the back where it is quieter and people are generally less invested in the gig. Some poor sod may have waited years or shelled out hundreds to be there and all they get is some inane, drunken dirge from the arsehole next to them.

Worst I have actually ever had was at an Americana/country gig of all things, at Band on the Wall in Manchester. They left after about an hour - thank god - but not before they had acted like pricks for half of the evening. Blokes shouting their own lyrics over the chorus and their girlfriends trying to sit on their shoulders etc. after six pints.

I had the same thing at a John Fogerty gig at the Manchester Apollo a few years ago. Some idiot sat right behind us was singing the lyrics that loud I couldn’t hear Fogerty. I asked him to pipe down but I was just wasting my breath. My mate was ready to plant him. Luckily there was a few empty seats a row or two further down and we moved.

The Leadmill to leave venue after losing appeal

A Sheffield institution, lets hope they can find anther venue.

Great stuff. Another cultural landmark being closed down so some piece of shit investors can steal even more wealth from society.

Disgusting. Where are the riots against this sort of thing happening? Where's the outrage over actual British culture being annihilated for the sake of greed?
