My rant!

Can I just say to all the people that park on the grass around the Animal trust(formally the manxman) on match days you're a bunch of self centred keaners, all of you including the many cars that 'freely' fill up the car park(even blocking of the car park entrances) at the animal trust you could at least have the decency to make a small donation to the animal trust(a brilliant 'not for profit' organisation)

its always nice newish cars as well(and suprise suprise at least a 3rd of them are usually 4x4s) likely owned by people that could easily pay for parking if they wanted.

Yep, I agree about modern day packaging. I'd love to know how many people end up in hospital over Xmas having stabbed themselves with a kitchen knife or scissors trying to open the packaging.!

DJ's at Social Events that insist on playing the music so loud that people who haven't seen each for years can't converse with anybody who isn't sat on either side of them ! Self absorbed keaners.

A woman set fire to her house yesterday in my street. I got back once the fire was out, but there had been animals inside and they needed people to give shelter to the three dogs. I took two of them in, and managed to calm them down, though I was up the entire night doing so.

This morning the police told me there's nothing they can do for the dogs. The RSPCA tell me that the dogs are my problem now. The Council say they can only get a dog if it's out on the streets (she actually recommended I let them run off and then call back, I obviously didn't).

Eventually a few of us in the area managed to get all three dogs rehomed, but I was absolutely disgusted by the response of the so-called 'official' agencies. I appreciate it was Boxing Day but I took those dogs in as a favour to the police and was basically left to sort everything out myself from that point onwards. The RSPCA and the Council were appalling in their responses. Fortunately I'm good with dogs having grown up with them, so I knew what to do, but it felt like I was punished for trying to do the right thing. I don't regret taking the dogs in, but the lack of support from any of the proper agencies was a real eye-opener. The police blamed the council, the council blamed the police and the RSPCA didn't give a @#/?.

I suppose it comes down to the old adage - If you want something to be done right, you've got to do it yourself.

My lab was attacked by a German Sheppard 6 months ago, it was off its lead, I thought it might be coming over to play, it grabbed my lab around his throat and wouldn't let go, the owner, who was quite a respectable person, tried desperately to prie its jaws open as I did, he got his finger torn up, I had blood all over my hand as well, eventually the dog let go, sometimes it really is the breed and not the owner

The rspca are a a total sham, caring for animals isnt even close to being a number 1 priority for them and Blackburn's dog wardens are just a couple of typical council worker jobsworths.

I didn't expect much from the RSPCA, but the Council's definition of a stray is ridiculous. Basically, if the dog isn't running around the streets it's the responsibility of whoever's house it happens to be in. As it turns out it was probably for the best, as I'd say we found them better homes far faster than the Council could have, but these people are being paid to follow insanely narrow rules that seem to be based off the old movie sketch where the dog warden chases the stray dog in the streets with a net.

They were lovely dogs as well. A 9 year old Lab and a 2 year old Husky, both incredibly docile considering what they'd been through. The Husky had been abused previously by a man, too, so was supposedly afraid of all males. She treated me like I'd known her all of her life. Don't know if that makes me a female in the eyes of dogs or just innately trustworthy. For my own sake I'll assume the latter!

It was Really good of you to help the dogs, there arent any dog rescues based in Blackburn anymore that may normally help on these I nd of situations, pendle dogs in need technically cover Blackburn but most of the volunteers that run pdin are mainly based around the Burnley area.

I recently found a little staffie type running around the streets one evening last month whilst i was out walking my dog and it followed me home. So i called the warden to pick it up or come and scan it for a chip to find its address (it wasn't wearing a collar) but i was told by the warden that they dont work out of hours at all and the advice he gave me was to either take the dog into my home and call back during weeking hours the next day OR let the dog go back to wondering the streets!!!

We have quite a few rescues around here. None of them were interested. The dogs were fortunate there are a fair few kind hearted people in this street who spent a decent portion of their boxing day finding them new homes. Was horrible seeing the Lab and Husky separated though. The Husky just kept howling and crying. Fortunately dogs adapt quickly and hopefully they'll both integrate quickly into their new families.

I've stopped donating to the RSPCA since they came to take a stray cat that we had found. I asked what they would do with it and was told that it would be euthenised in the van outside the door. I sent them packing and the happy ending was that we found the owner after a day or two.

A lot of people don't realise how many perfectly healthy animals the RSPCA euthanise. Nowadays it's purely a business and if potential costs to care for and rehome the animal outweigh what it would cost to kill it, they'll kill it. You're better off setting the poor buggers loose than giving them to the RSPCA. Not sure how other animal charities act in the same way, but it seems like the majority of the time it's better for the animal for you to try and rehome it yourself.

Obviously, it goes without saying that a lot of the blame lies on people who get animals, then become bored of/irritated with them and dump them with a charity, creating an almost impossible situation to manage. I find it hard to understand the mindset of somebody who would take in another creature as a pet (whether it's a dog, cat or hamster) then give it up because they can't be arsed anymore. I do appreciate some people have legitimate reasons for having to give up a pet, but plenty of others just don't want to put the effort in. Totally disgraceful imo.

its sick how many cats and dogs the rspca kill each year without even making any real attempt to re-home them, there dog re-homing policies are also absurdly restrictive and they're totally inflexible, the majority of people looking to take in a dog wouldn't even qualify no matter how good of owners they may be, theyd sooner put a dog to sleep than take a chance re-homing a dog to somebody that doesn't 100% match their policies(some of which- you must have a completely secure outdoor areas with fencing no lower than about 6ft+, the dog must not be left alone for more than a few hours a day, etc... so basically no normal working people or families can adopt from them)

if you really care about animals and want to donate please donate to local animal rescues, many of which are run completely from donated money and run by un- paid volunteers so every penny is needed and spent wisely.

i can't personally vouch for all these local rescues apart from 'pendle dogs in need'(brilliant dog rescue run entirely by volunteers) but im pretty frickin certain that donating to any of these places is a far better option than donating to the rspca.

They're all very nice dogs(as most dogs are) as long as you are responsible, do your research, know what your getting, have a lifestyle that suits those dogs and your not just choosing it for the way it looks.

That said, most rescues and the rspca ARE NOT full of pedigrees, the owners of them usually don't have to much trouble selling them once the novelty has worn off or the fads have changed as long as they're not very old, It's predominantly mix breeds(with at a guess at least 50% being mix bull breeds) in the rescues, etc..

also many pedigree dogs have national societies/rescues that deal with specific pedigrees(ie. akitas, gsd, colles, labs,.....)

My dog came from Bleakholt. Although I am supportive of them and I have had her nearly 13 years now, I had to pretend that I still lived at my parents house (because they had a secured back garden with 5ft fencing) I also had to state that she wouldn't be on her own during the day for any longer than a few hours, they worked nights and I was flexible and studying). She has had a great life though (with plenty left hopefully!) I actually lived backing onto the hills, in a safe and lovely apartment. She was walked over the hills most nights, through the woods x amount of times a week etc and treated like a queen 😊 If I had been totally honest, we wouldn't have been allowed her.

They all do preliminary home checks now, mainly to make sure that you are matched with a dog that suit your home and lifestyle, this way is better all around as it means that they don't have to rigidly stick to one4all policies(like fence height, etc...) and can be more flexible and common sense driven when finding the right home&owner/s for a dog.

She's a cross breed, absolutely beautiful and so great with the kids we've had since. Going off how she used to act I don't think she had a great start in life but certainly made up for it since!

They should do to be fair, it's sad how often the same dogs get given up time after time.

One of the few remaining pieces of Victorian engineering left in Blackburn is the glass canopy outside the railway station. Very useful for dropping off and picking up in bad weather, except the Council have paved this area for no apparent reason and created a dropping off/picking up area outside the canopy open to the elements. Genius!

Haven't been down for a while but haven't the Police commandeered most of the covered parking area for their own use?

that's how its seemed to me since they set up base there, you can easily still drop off/pick up there though(as long as your not hanging around getting in the way)
