Come on boys calm down. He was poor and biased, but it is just football, leave the man alone.

So when Jimk2 et al talk so pessimistic about Rovers you don't ever respond.  We haven't been overly negative at all.  We have simply done what any team would do and that is try and hold on to a lead.

re jim and rovers: thats different, i've shown blind optimism for rovers and always will tongue.gif

Don't get me wrong, we should hold onto a lead. At around the 50th minute maybe at a push? But 3 minutes in, we score and then never looked likely to score again (Only on set pieces). Our build up play was terrible, giving the ball away to often and just overall not looknig like to score.

It makes me laugh some of the comments.  Obviously when two teams are evenly matched when one takes the lead they will sit back.  What else would you do?  Course we sat too deep but it was the quarter final for gods sake players get nervous and panic.

I didn't think that Portugal looked that nervous when they were 2-1 up. Correct me if i'm wrong but they stuck to their guns and attacked. Admitedly they got beat on a set play, but we weren't going to score in open play which is where we should have scored if they were actually 'exposed' by being attacking minded.

Yes we played too many long balls but with the strikers we had on it was an easy option and when you are leading 1-0 in a quarter final you take the easy option.

As soon as Rooney went off we starting hitting long balls. Why? We were still playing fairly decent football at times until he went off.

If you honestly think we deserve to be going home then fair enough but we have played some of the best football at times and had as much right to be there as a few of the others.  When we needed to we could play and score something the Italians, Germans and a few others clearly couldn't but you stick to your guns Tom.

Damn right, we have played some cracking football. Against france we did (Apart from the last 3 minutes) as we kept going at them even though we only had a 1-0 lead. Switzerland was one of the most convincing wins of the tournament (Along with Sweden 5-0 and Holland against Latvia). Croatia we played very well (Apart from our set plays) but against Portugal we looked totally different. We didn't look the attacking force we had looked in the other games. Maybe this was due to Rooney going off, but we'll never know.

And finally, I will stick to my guns, as many people who know me know i haven't exactly got a proper footballing brain when it comes to giving opinions. But i fell very strongly about this one and believe i'm right.

Absolutely agree with everything you have said througout this thread except for your last statement in that quote. We played well against France but still played so negatively throughout the second half and probably deserved a draw, Switzerland was the most boring match i've seen and we -played dam negatively even though they were reduced to 10 men, Croata we were the ones to go down 1-0 and thats why that game was so much more positive and why our midfield combined so well and why it was a cracking game to watch and why we were just so much a better team. Last night we were negative as soon as we scored the goal and WELL too negative. Agreed that until Rooney went off we still had some kind of attacking prowess, mainly because he dropped back to get hold of the ball. When he came off we played so deep and invited pressure for 65minutes. The portuguese were just toying with us, we didn't stand a chance against quality opposition. We just did not deserve to go through.

From a neutral's perspective, finally the negative teams are out of the tournament and we have some cracking games ahead of us. If we ever want to progress as a footballing nation we need a new coach who doesn't play so negatively.

For those of you interested in airing your grievances to Herr Meier in person -

Urs Meier Haushaltgeräte AG

Landstrasse 104

5436 Würenlos

Tel: 056 436 80 50

Fax: 056 436 80 55

Will find out the grid reference (GIS) for that address and forward onto the Royal Navy. They can deal with it in a manner they find suitable.

Surely it'd be more efficient to use the airforce to blow up some house in Switzerland?

Too many witnesses. You can't really miss a plane swooping low to drop a bomb.

Guys guys guys guys...

I really think you should all calm down and relax.

It's been some time since England performed so good in any major tournament! You should all be proud with your team.

Please remember. You should not judge a match by a single moment...

If you want to do it, with the referees decision, remember these...

- Rooney's unlucky exit.

- Owen's shot saved by Ricardo

- (and the most important one for me) Terry's not jumping for a cross for just once in the whole game.

I can assure you. England can only get better. I've been watching football in the last 22 years, following England since '86, and it is the first time i can say that, england "is" getting better.

Urs Meier...I mean come on, name me a single referee who can give that goal, at that minute of the game, in a major championship, against the hosts. Let me tell you; only Pierluigi Collina. He's the one who can (even) "decide" against the hosts in any game...

And to be honest, i really think you're over-reacting. Please take a break and remember Euro 96. Spain playing against England...I think it was either the second half of the extra time or the 90th minute...I am not sure which player it was, but the assistent referee stopped the game for absolutely no reason. There were 3 spanish players on the break, no offside or foul whatsoever, and only Seaman to beat.

These things happen in football, and this time it was agaist us.

Yes, us is what i say because despite being Turkish and going out against England, I always follow England. I am proud of the way they performed.

So should you be...

Greetings to all from Ankara...

Hope to be back soon.

Hey!

The season went no good.

Lost yet again in the Turkish cup final.

Lost the coach to the national team.

Brought back the coach we sacked 2 years before because he was "buying" and "selling" games.

Lost many players.

Brought no replacements.

Can it be worse???

I am looking after all my blackburn shirts. I'm wearing them with pride!

Because I'm proud to be a Rover!

Anyway...

Got one more thing to add.

Name me any other nation who loves football more!

In every game, there are english flags flying with pride. (I know there are at least four brfcs.com flags)

Come on guys. cheer up!

They blame all of us being hooligans, but who loves football more?

We're in every single game, cheering up just for football!

So, the world now knows the TRUTH!

Best wishes to all of you...

I know most of you don't understand the text, but I think the pictures should speak for themselves. Last time I checked, what Terry is doing there is a foul

http://www.dagbladet.no/sport/2004/06/25/401493.html

But the Norwegians are probably in on the conspiracy, the pictures are doctored etc.. am I right?  rolleyes.gif

The ball is already in the net when that picture is taken, watch the replay and Terry's eyes.

Uhm look at the four pictures below that. It certainly isn't already in the net in the top two pictures.

Because if terry is making a genuine attempt to play the ball, then it's not a foul, they are just getting in each others way if you see. His arm is "limp", if you see what I mean, in that top picture, it is not holding him down, it is straight out. It's not a foul, I'm a striker (watch out I'm looking to get somewhere with this) and if that goal was taken away from me, I'd be miffed.

the problem is that Ricardo is a goalie.

And laws are very clear on that

The goalie can't be pushed or prevented from jumping.

I used to be a keeper (Not a very good one though tongue.gif) and if that goal was allowed, I'd be miffed.

It may well have been given in the UK or in Scandinavia, but in most other leagues it would've been disallowed.

But I suppose nothing will persuade you that there was the slightest chance that this was correct, not even Campbell saying it, so this'll probably (Unless I get very interesting replies to this) be my last post on the subject.

cheating portugal $£%%^&&^%

it wasnt enough to have a goal disalowed on the sole basis that they were at home, it was the last minute, and they would have been out

but

every single time one of our players touched them, they dived to the floor like they had been shot and the ref fell for it everytime, a good ref would have let the game flow and put an end to it before it began

and can someone tell me why vassel conceded 20 fouls for nothing, especially the one where the player jumped over him and won a free kick

if you ask me i believed the ref was racist, if you think about it, he did signal out the black english players

thought the swiss were nutural...my arse
