Whilst I appreciate JRC wasn't fit, his performance wasn't just about lacking match fitness. He looked like he hadn't kicked a ball in years. He could barely control the ball, he couldn't tackle properly, I counted at least three times where he miskicked an attempted pass/cross completely, and he was positioning himself like he'd never played right back or indeed 11-a-side before. Now in fairness he has not been anywhere close to that bad in previous outings, so I'm not going to say that was normal for him, but it was still an atrocious performance and impossible to ignore. Probably a one off, but even so, I'd agree that he needs some serious injury-free time in the u23's before being recalled to the first team.

It's not the first time Gallagher has had an absolute mare in that position and sadly I very much doubt it will be the last. When it comes to Gallagher and RW Mowbray is a complete idiot who keeps trying the same thing over and over even though it never works.
-
We'd have had some go against us too, for sure. I just think the balance would be in our favour. Could just be my own bias clouding my view though!
-
I don't really watch much of the PL so I can't really comment on how it's utilised there. When I've seen it used in the Champions League and WC it's seemed fairly reasonable. Considering the EFL would be in charge of it... yeah, it'd probably be a total disaster.

I suppose the only potential positive (and I'm grasping here) is that if the ref had given us a pen, sent the Hull player off and we'd gone on to scrape another win Cardiff-style Mowbray may have incorrectly assumed he'd made the right decision. As it stands, even with the refereeing shananigans taken into account, there's no question the manager picked the wrong line up. We can only hope Mowbray recognises that and sorts it out for the next match.

Whilst our performance was poor, the referee remains one of if not the biggest factor in tonight's scoreline. It's not often I would pin a result on a set of officials, but for me that decision in the first half is as bad as it gets and changes everything about the match. Allowing the second goal was bad too, but that first terrible decision was a genuine game-changer. People complain about VAR, but if it existed in the Championship I imagine we'd have had more positive results from it than bad this season.

No doubt we've been riding a crazy wave of momentum with a largely settled side high on confidence. Now that our momentum has dissipated, forced changes are being made to the starting line up and confidence is dropping we'll see how capable we really are of sustaining a realistic promotion push. It's the kind of period teams who get promoted find a way to push through, until some stability and confidence returns again. We may not have the depth or the quality, ultimately, but it's been a fun ride and I desperately hope it doesn't end with a death spiral. That would be pretty crushing after the past few months.

Every time we say that Mowbray will surely play Gallagher as a target man this time we end up with something like Buckley as a false 9 instead.

The concern for me is that this is our third 'bad day in the office' in a row. For some the FA Cup is an irrelevence but we played a decent team who looked poor against a League One side, we got away with it at Cardiff and then again tonight very poor and a second defeat in three. This match feels more like a continued decline than a one off to me. I really hope I'm wrong on that though!
-
He gave the ball away countless times in the first half, and a fair few times in the second half too. A couple of times in very dangerous positions which would have really cost us if we were playing a decent team. Second half he was a decent attacking outlet, but overall his performance reminded me of Bell. Struggled to defend, struggled to pass but looked useful going forward without actually achieving anything.

At this point if Gallagher starts it is purely to justify his wage and new contract. It's clear that he unbalances the side when he's in it, and at best he should be an impact sub. I suppose it's possible he plays through the middle on Monday with BBD absent, but I never feel comfortable ascribing a logical decision to our manager. We'll see. We basically need Boro to be like us tonight and not be up for it on Monday, if we're to have any chance. With Wilder at the helm I sadly think that's highly unlikely.

Are you sure they weren't booing the ref? I'd be really surprised if the team was booed off by our fans at HT. A turgid first 45, for sure, but we've seen plenty of those in the past when we've been in much worse league positions and not heard the team booed off.
-
He was absolutely raging after the second goal, and rightly so too. For the ref and the linesmen to collectively decide BBD and Kaminski weren't fouled for those incidents in the first and second halves is genuinely beyond belief. The lot of them should be nowhere near officiating matches if that's their interpretation of the rules.

Another poor performance, this time with the result to match. The officials have cost us here and should be reprimanded for decision-making which was frankly incompetent in every sense. A penalty and Hull down to ten early on changes everything. Their second goal should never be allowed. Obvious decisions which cannot be defended. With that said, we were shit. You could tell from the first 5 minutes we were going to struggle and weren't up for it at all. Our lack of squad depth shined through tonight as the replacements for our unavailable first-teamers proved to be far, far below the required standard. Mowbray's unnecessary changing of tactics to shoehorn Gallagher into the team is proof that he really doesn't learn. First half was an absolute disgrace. Not a decent performance to be seen. We looked like we'd stumbled onto the pitch from the nearest boozer. Second half we had periods of decent play, but let's be honest, Hull had the better chances and could have scored another two or three. In comparison for all our huffing and puffing we barely worked their keeper and looked depressingly void of quality. Kaminski - 4/10 - poor night for him. Looked uncertain more than once. Fouled for the second goal. JRC - 2/10 - Hard to remember a worse performance at RWB, or in general really. Looked like a fan who had won a competition to play for the club. Lenihan - 6/10 - Didn't really do anything majorly wrong, but made a couple of poor decisions further up the pitch. Van Hecke - 5/10 - Not too much wrong defensively but had a couple of free headers from corners and wasted them. Wharton - 6/10 - OK. Not much else to say. Edun - 3/10 - Horrific first half. Looked better in the second from an attacking perspective, still a poor left back though. The sooner Pickering returns the better. Rothwell - 5/10 - Some nice touches at times but did nothing of note. Buckley - 5/10 - A couple of lovely passes in the first half which deserved better. Forgot he was on the pitch in the second half until he was subbed. Gallagher - 2/10 - An anti-footballer. I hate watching him play for us, even more so on the right wing. In fairness to him, judging by his effort in this match he hates it too. Brereton - 5/10 - Should have won us a penalty, but other than that was pretty poor. Get him off to Chile so that he can regain the Diaz, fast. Khadra - 5/10 - Busy in the first half but terrible final touch, final ball and shooting attempts. Didn't do much in the second half. Subs - 5/10 for the lot. We didn't really look any better when they came on. Mowbray - 1/10 - back to his worst with formation tinkering and Gallagher on the wing. The team looked beaten from the first minute. How and why did we start the match with such low motivation? Really, really bad tonight, and I fear it's going to get worse on Monday. Feels like our luck and momentum has run out, with performances on the decline and the squad beginning to look stretched and unbalanced. Ideas of 'bouncing back' and this result being a one off ignore the context of our recent performances I'm afraid.

Our corners have been really poor tonight. On top of everything else.
-
The officials have cost us this one. There needs to be consequences for this.
-
Markanday and Johnson set to come on.
-
Scary how Hull have cut through us at various points tonight. Have to think Wilder will be sitting there thinking that if Boro go for the jugular against us they could give us a proper thrashing. Could be 2-0 down. Lucky not to be.
-
Good start to the second half. Need to score in the next 10 minutes though or I fear this fizzles out to a 1-0 or Hull hit us with a sucker punch.
-
Just not a proper footballer in any real sense of the word. Limited to being able to put away potshots or headers once every so often. What attributes Mowbray thinks Gallagher possesses to play right wing is beyond me. I can't think of anybody in our squad less suited to the role.
-
Gallagher 😂 total carthorse.
-
If we sell Nyambe in this window then hoooo boy, we had better hope big Z is half-decent and stays fit, or we are stuffed.
-
Khadra is the only one who looks like making something happen for us, but he hasn't got his shooting boots on unfortunately. We can only hope he finds them at HT.
-
Gallagher signed to 2024. 😞

Could make a case to sub most of the players outside of the goalie and back three at half time. What a dismal showing. Special mention to JRC, Gallagher and Edun who barely even look like professional footballers. Khadra has been getting into dangerous positions but making dreadful decisions. Not seen much from Brereton, Rothwell or Buckley. Should have had a pen and Hull should be down to ten, but even so, an incredibly disappointing first 45.
