  1. I don't think enough of him to get shut of Mowbray to bring him in. I don't think he's THAT good. Whereas a McCarthy, Hughton or Bruce if available and willing to come I would seriously look at having here over Mowbray. But if Mowbray were to leave for whatever reason then yes, I think Rowett would tick a lot of our boxes when searching for a new manager. I'd probably put Rowett in a similar bracket to Warburton and Monk. Decent records in this league albeit not the promotion nack of a Hughton or Bruce who seem to be able to transform clubs into contenders overnight.
  2. Just over 900 sold for tomorrow so once again looking like 1000 or so at a London away game. Good effort. Compare to what the London clubs bring to Ewood and we do get some excellent support in London and surrounding areas
  3. I think Rowett is a decent manager albeit one who will deliver functional and defensive football. Would be a good appointment for a side like Millwall. Also shown he can do it on a limited budget at Birmingham. His record at Stoke not looking so bad in hindsight.
  4. You might not win anything in the first 10 games but you can certainly lose things. Take Stoke, one of my and many other peoples favourites for a top 6 position at the start of the season, 8 defeats in 10 games has already ruled out promotion and will likely see them in a season long relegation battle. If they'd been mediocre in the first 10 games rather than abysmal and were sat on 10-15 points they'd have a good chance of kicking on for a play off spot.
  5. Very surprised at that Millwall development. Not exactly adrift (only 3 points behind us in a congested bottom half). Club legend. One of the last I'd have expected to be on his way after only 10 games. I did wonder if Stoke had put the feelers out today and he's decided to jump ship. Some eyebrow raising names among the early favourites including Hughton, Karanka and McCarthy. Can't see Millwall being able to lure any of those there. More likely they'll go for a former player.
  6. Well I suppose they might be impressed by his talk of them being a 'huge club'. Suspect he's the only professional in football to ever describe Stoke in such terms.
  7. What is long term, out of interest? Another year, two years, five years? Surely it should depend on achievements rather than some principled point about sticking with the incumbent rather than making a change? Would you accept 5 bottom half finishes like last season so we can celebrate backing Mowbray and him being here 'long term'? Mowbray has been here more than 2.5 years now, which is above average tenure in the Championship and longer than all the current managers with the exceptions of Harris at Millwall, Johnson at Bristol and Warnock at Cardiff. Those other 3 have arguably done as well if not better than Mowbray in their time at those clubs. Harris got Millwall up and kept them up on a small budget, Warnock worked miracles at Cardiff and Johnson has built Bristol into a side I expect to make the playoffs. For right or for wrong managers don't get long term unless they consistently overachieve e.g. Dyche or Howe. In the Championship they get a couple of shots at it then the clubs tend to look elsewhere in their pursuit of success.
  8. Preston away should always be a sell out. Given it is nearer to home than Ewood for a large chunk of Rovers fans, reasonable(ish) ticket prices and proper kick off time it will be a very sad sight if we don't sell out. Especially when they will probably bring more to Ewood for the return leg when Waggott rolls out the red carpet treatment to get as many to buy as possible.
  9. Ipswich in a similar boat to us really. Limited Championship squad and budget. Botched appointments (Hurst/Coyle) replacing or effectively replacing decent and stable predecessors (McCarthy/Bowyer). Poor transfer business. Assets sold. Popular replacements come in too late to achieve survival (Lambert/Mowbray) but stick around to lead a promotion push in League One where the players are too good for the division.
  10. It is an issue that can be improved if not fixed. Crowds and atmospheres at Ewood are awful, but it doesn't help when on the nice days with a couple of thousand extra on we put in crap displays and get beat. It doesn't help when the club is advertising the ability to watch the game at home online for £10 rather than pay £20+ to come to Ewood in the cold. Decreasing numbers are not natural, its alarming and a failing of management especially when virtually everyone else has seen an increase in crowds.
  11. Something seriously wrong at Stoke. Hughes, Lambert and Rowett all decent managers but couldn't stop the decline and were sacked, Jones probably the same although perhaps the job is too big for him. Strange because for a few years they were a model club and unlike us weren't sold out to unfit people- they've still got Coates at the helm who has been there years.
  12. Every week that goes by the chances of them attracting a Hughton or Moyes diminishes. Would Moyes really gamble his status on a relegation dogfight with Stoke? Surely he will have options abroad with his Premier League background. Hughton can sit tight and wait for the right job to come along. He would keep Stoke up and is the best of the available managers for a struggling Championship side. If they can't get either of those two then there aren't many options left. Pulis would keep them up but probably annoy lots of their fans. Adkins maybe. Pearson seems to be the forgotten man these days.
  13. If there's one constant under Mowbray's management it is slow, boring, dull and low scoring first 45-60 minutes at home before the handbrake gets taken off in the last 20 minutes. Last night no different. Turgid stuff for the first hour or so and then some decent play and pressure in the last 15 minutes but ultimately not enough to get the win. 1 point from 6 at home this week is very disappointing and for me further evidence that at best we are going to be a mid table side. After the Luton display a win was needed. I still don't think Mowbray has a preferred XI or system to use. On to QPR- another team we should be finishing above if the play offs are a serious aim but another one that no doubt lots will be happy with a draw from.
  14. No. I'll never take a draw at home before the game. Forest aren't 'the top team' either. Better than average but we will need to finish above them if we want the play-offs.
  15. I believe that Mowbray's strategy for the Luton game amounted to trying to blow them away, thinking that this team could get ahead early doors and that they would crumble as a weak newly promoted side. When our early pressure failed to deliver a goal and then they went down the other end and scored with their first attempt the manager and players ran out of ideas. For me a very naive and limited approach to take. I don't feel we are ever really in control of games or have a clear plan as to what we are doing. Far from being impressed by Mowbray's talk about rotating players this actually fills me with dread as I don't think he has a first choice XI or system that works best that he will stick to. You compare to a Dyche or Wilder who have a set way of playing and recruit accordingly I think Mowbray is way off. Sometimes it will work but sometimes it is very frustrating and sees us as a very inefficient side. Loads of possession and very little to show for it.
  16. The referee was half the story. He failed in his duties to prevent time wasting. His decision to issue a yellow card in the 94th minute for time wasting was a disgrace. They took more time on many, many earlier throws and goal kicks yet all he did was wave his arm. Then when protected by a lack of time remaining and to try and shield himself from criticism he issues a yellow for timewasting. Coward. But the other side to the story is our ineffectiveness in the final 3rd. We could have played all night and we probably wouldn't have scored. Same with Charlton earlier this season. Possession on the halfway line is meaningless.
  17. We always have a positive first 10 minutes before regression in the remaining 35 minutes. Mowbray's 'game plan' is to try and catch the opposition out early doors before they can settle down. On rare occasions it works e.g. Leeds last season but more often than not it doesn't. We then fail to sustain it and quickly run out of ideas as the opposition settle down and deal with our 'threats' with relative ease. Hence we usually go in at half time with 0 goals. Yesterday we went one further and threw more at Luton partly because they are a poor side but also because Mowbray had more confidence in our chances of getting goals against them. It didn't work because they got to grips with us and could cope quite easily with it whilst picking us off on the counter. No plan b in terms of getting the ball forward quickly or punishing them on set pieces.
  18. I don't see anyone seeking Mowbray's sacking. I see lots of people rightly concerned about another poor result and performance against a team that will win very few away games this season yet have managed to do so at Ewood with relative ease. This is all part of a bigger picture in which Mowbray and the team have no plan B and struggle to perform against those sides they are expected to beat, going back a couple of seasons. Not just a response to one game. As you say we've also lost almost half our games this season which is alarming. For all the talk about progress and Mowbray sorting out the issues of last season they all reared their ugly head again today and put us back to square one: Loads of possession but no proper chances. 2 goals conceded both from relatively straightforward crosses into the box Their goalkeepers only involvement was timewasting from goalkicks Only a couple of attempts on target No plan b other than Mowbray chucking players on in the last 20 minutes and ending up with people playing all over the place.
  19. An immensely disappointing afternoon. After the Reading win last week even I (Mr Negative) spent this week looking forward to this game with some optimism that we could get a 3rd straight win and move into or close to those top 6 slots and build some proper momentum. I should have known better as the entirely predictable come down arrived as soon as confidence and optimism was building. Now lost almost half our games in the League this season so forget going anywhere good any time soon with those sort of stats. Like with the Charlton game picked off by a limited side who just kept it tight, did the basics of game management and took advantage at the key times whilst our monotonous, boring, aimless passing around in circles with next to no penetration and no Plan B meant we go nowhere despite bucket loads of possession. 2 attempts on target, at home, is appalling. No ifs, buts, maybes. Shocking. Needs sorting urgently. Expect to see the usual 'this is the Championship, everyone can beat anyone, 'typical' Rovers - as though some mystical power beyond our control is responsible and the manager/players aren't responsible. No - we've lost that game because WE haven't been good enough and it requires analysis and work to address it. I sincerely hope the manager isn't telling the players 'eh well don't worry lads it's a tough league this, Rovers always do this'. Another shame as like Charlton there were a few more fans on including the 'Next Generation' who once again will be going home after a dreadful defeat. Some actual chance creation and goals would be nice. The conclusion to draw is that we're set for another season of floating around in mid-table at best. No chance of the play-offs and unlikely to go down. Is that good enough for a club losing £15 million a year and spending £15 million on strikers who don't score? Travis man of the match by a mile. Excellent stuff from him. Referee a disgrace. I can't say much more than that as it will only make me angry. His decision to award a yellow card for timewasting in the 4th minute of added time was the icing on the cake of what was a shameful performance. Awarded late enough for him to tick a box for 'dealing' with time wasting but also ensuring he wouldn't have to do any more than that. His laughable arm waving to get the game going again - is it any wonder there's so little respect for officials if that is their approach to timewasting? I've not seen the disallowed goal yet so can't comment.
  20. I remember when they beat us at Ewood towards the end of last season 1-0. A nothing game for two sides who were staying up but finishing in the bottom half, they edged it but it was a turgid game and 0-0 would have been a fair result. After the game he was on the pitch, lapping up the applause from their fans, beating his chest like they'd won the European Cup or something. He certainly has a high opinion of himself. Apparently whilst he was Luton manager he told people his aim was to manage Barcelona. His failings at Stoke should at least knock him down a peg or two.
  21. Heard all this stuff before. Sometimes I wonder whether it is Mowbray sending messages to Venkys and putting the ball in their court e.g. if I do my bit over the next couple of months we expect you to come back and do your bit by spending. As others have pointed out we were in a very good position in January 2019 to launch a play off push yet signed nobody and let our defenders go out on loan. We ended up plummeting whilst PNE went much nearer the top 6. I always find this talk of 'pushing' or 'chasing' the top 6 funny. The whole point of the play off system is to ensure most teams in the league have something to fight for in the latter stages of the season. If you aren't fighting relegation and aren't in the automatic promotion slots then most other clubs will be in the play-offs or in with a chance of getting there in January and February Traditionally 50 points is the survival requirement and 70+ is the play offs. So as long as we are comfortably past 50 needed for survival then we are going to be within a few wins of the play offs. That's the way it always is. Of course the play-offs themselves don't mean much unless you go on and win them. If not they can be very damaging going into the following season as sides like Reading have found out. Much better targeting the top 2 with the play-offs as a consolation. What does all this mean for Venkys and funding? Conceivably we could be 7th and 10 points off the top 6 in January or we could be 13th and 3 points off them. Which is better for Venkys when deciding whether to chuck more cash in?
  22. I've heard some excuses in my time but to hear that Accy Stanley can afford to dish out free shirts to Primary school kids in our traditional heartlands because they 'make a profit' whilst we do nothing is up there. We don't do it because we have no idea and no serious intention to do anything about growing a fanbase. Andy Holt is serious about trying to grow his club and increase their support base, we aren't. Then Waggott and co. Question commitment. We're so far short on the game its untrue.
  23. I asked Waggott last week what efforts the club was making in non Blackburn catchment areas like South Ribble, Hyndburn and Rossendale to grow our support. His response wasn't clear but he said that the budget might not accommodate putting free buses on to games from all those places. In my view missing the point entirely.
  24. Think some Stoke fans are deluded if they think Allardyce or Moyes will drop to the bottom of the Championship. Assuming they don't go up or even go down and assuming the League enforce their own rules then they're going to be in serious FFP trouble soon. The obvious one is Hughton but not sure he'd move up North to a sinking club. He can wait for something better like Fulham or Derby who could both have vacancies themselves by Xmas.
  25. Accy Stanley are on their annual shirt giveaway today dishing out free shirts to all Year 3 kids in Hyndburn. Not just Accy but the surrounding towns which are full of Rovers fans. I get sick of repeating myself but this is another example of where we are falling short. Hyndburn is our territory. Year 3 kids we should be targeting as our next generation of support. Is there a single reason why Stanley can each year do as they are whilst we do nothing?
