  6. It always irks me to see them labelled as 'Diana Ross and the Supremes' to be honest Tyrone. They were always The Supremes really.
  7. Mary Wilson, founder member of The Supremes, has died very suddenly at the age of 76. With the possible exceptions of Elvis and The Beatles, they were as big a game changer as any artist back in the day, and opened doors for black artists and women that were previously firmly locked. RIP.

  9. I think everyone in that argument can claim to be right on this one though old mate. Winning by 220+ runs also means that those, like me, who thought it overcautious to need 420 runs in the bank, can say 'I told you so'. I know teams have got much better at chasing these days but there was no way on earth was any team going to score that many on that pitch. Anyway, as they say, all's well that ends well.
  10. Excellent win! Just listening to the two knights, Cook and Strauss at the end of the Channel 4 made me smile. Cook: "This is the only time I miss playing, when you can sit down with a beer at the end of the game with the lads" Strauss: "Yeah, a great start, but that's all it is, a start. We need to prepare for the next game now and not get carried away" I know which one I would prefer as my captain.

  14. I haven't read it in years but from his autobiography I have a hazy recollection that Botham had trials all over the place at football, so I don't think it was a publicity stunt. Agree that he wasn't the slimmest but in those days he wouldn't have been alone. Larry Lloyd was a similar build. I'll tell you a Rovers player that was good enough to play first class cricket - Chris Sutton. Classy batsman.
  15. Botham played a couple of football games for Scunthorpe as well didn't he? Andy Goram was a fair cricketer. I played against him a few times at cricket and football and as a youth he was actually a better cricketer than he was a footballer to be honest. At least, he was bang average in the footie games I played against him in anyway. At cricket, he was an all rounder who batted left handed and bowled right arm medium, as well as keeping wicket sometimes. He had trials for Lancs but didn't quite make the grade. He represented Scotland at both sports, the only person to do so. The Scotland games were mainly in the 50 over cup games (B&H?)

  17. I think the difficulty for a lot of people is that once we got to 375 you would think that would be enough. You have to back yourself and it isn't the first time we have been overly cautious in recent years. Root got burned at Headingley v Windies a few years ago but they happen once in a Preston Guild and shouldn't influence every declaration decision. Would Allan Border, Clive Lloyd, Waugh, Vaughan, Strauss etc have batted so long today? Hopefully we will still bowl India out tomorrow but I would have preferred them to be 3 down tonight.
  18. Isn't that the whole point of a message board like this?? For what its worth the fewer overs you give India to chase 420, the fewer overs you also have to bowl them out. As an armchair captain I would have chucked the kitchen sink at it once we got beyond 350, and either got bowled out or declared when the lead hit 400 to give us as much time as possible to get the ten wickets. If the Indians chased 400 on that pitch then they thoroughly deserve to win, as far as I'm concerned. Its the classic glass half full/half empty scenario but give me a positive attitude every time. That's how India won in Australia recently.
  19. Just listened to Sir Al Cook trying to justify the tactics. We think Mowbray overthinks things, blimey I've never heard so much tosh in my life. Edit - he did make it clear that he was trying to guess why Root and Silverwood had done what they did, he didn't suggest that he would have made the same decision.
  20. I just don't understand why they are doing this.
  21. Root may be a brilliant batsman but I do wonder about his captaincy sometimes.
