  1. Every day's a good day when you're retired. Off to Spain for seven weeks on Tuesday. This is the life.
  2. If the Gods had smiled on them both Keith Newton and Fred Pickering could have been in that 1966 squad. Keith just missed out, he was in the group of 26 ( I think it was ) that trained for the finals but just missed the cut to the last 22 players. He got a bit of a chasing by the great Jimmy Johnstone ( not on his own there ) in the Scotland v England a few weeks earlier and Sir Alf opted for the more experienced Gerry Byrne from Liverpool. A decent full back but not nearly in the same class as Keith Newton. Fred in his prime was a better centre forward than Hurst in my opinion but he sustained a bad knee injury earlier in the season. Who knows it could have been Fred getting that hat trick ! If the World Cup had been held in 1964 and not 1966 Bryan Douglas would have walked into the team.
  3. Let's hope he turns out as good. Another Zurab would be great in the current team.
  4. There are mistakes and dumb mistakes, that one against Preston was up there with the Matt Derbyshire v City clanger. That one only cost us two points but I don't think he ever kicked a ball for our first team again. The one against Preston was crucial to our survival. He's an improvement on Nuttall , probably an improvement on Samuel but will he score enough goals to keep us up ? I doubt it.
  5. So. it wasn't a dumb mistake ? I must have got that one wrong then.
  6. Not many very tall players are good jumpers. There are exceptions. Mike England was 6'3" tall and had a terrific spring in his legs.
  7. Yeah, dumb footballers make dumb mistakes.
  8. That must be another Gallagher that I haven't seen play. The one I saw play was big but powerful he wasn't, and he couldn't head the ball.
  9. I just read he's on £24k a week at Southampton ! Football is a mad world. You'd think he could afford a personal trainer and some Guinness and steak on that sort of money.
  10. Average pace for a striker, he wasn't rapid by any means.
  11. I can see the sense in what you're saying. As far as I saw he didn't really get a running chance. He was playing with his back to goal most of the time.
  12. Gallagher may be " mobile and quick " but will he be able to hold the ball up ? I thought he was a lightweight when I saw him play. I agree with the other poster regarding his heading ability. Another one in the long list of 6' 1" players who jumped 5' 10". I was hoping we could do better to be honest. Maybe other teams aren't interested in our magic beans. I think we can infer from the players we've been linked with that there is no real money coming from the Chicken Chokers.
  13. Looks like Leeds didn't rate him either and that's the level we're playing at now. The lad had no pace and no strength, he didn't really have a trick in him. He ran around a lot but to no great effect, I don't think I ever saw him win the ball in a one on one challenge with a defender. He was a decent finisher but didn't contribute much to team play. I'm relieved he's not coming back.
  14. I don't watch the Prem much any more so I haven't seen a lot of Harry Kane. I thought he started the competition well enough but the longer it went on the worse he got. From what I saw he's nowhere near a World class player. He's just not dynamic enough. I think his success in the Prem says a lot about the standard of football in the Prem. Having said that he didn't get much service from the rest of the team. I also thought he was a strange choice as team captain. I suppose the thinking was he was the one certain starter in the team at the beginning of the tournament. That says a lot about the rest of the team.
  15. I hope both you and rovers go on for many more years Shaun. In the case of the club as long as the Chicken Chokers are in charge we'll remain in the intensive care ward.
  16. Hand on heart I didn't think all the ball was over the line at the time.
  17. No, of course not, sorry about that.
  18. Last season we were playing for the very survival of the club. Another bad season and who knows we're we would be now. England can go again next time and the time after etc for ever. You need to get a sense of perspective. It's a game. In 1966 we didn't a week off work after the Final. It was old news on the Monday and we got on with normal life pretty quickly. We seem to make a massive deal out of everything these days. I look at like this, what would you prefer - those kids in Thailand getting out of that cave or England winning the World Cup ? If they'd have died that would have been a tragedy. England losing to Croatia at football ? Come on, it's a bloody game.
  19. No contest, I've seen us win the World Cup before. We need to be back in the big money ASAP.
  20. That's because I watch both teams, not just the one in blue and white. I praise Rovers and the playing staff when they deserve it. I gave Dack , Raya, Bennett, Lenihan etc plenty of praise. In that Wigan v City game Wigan defended like their lives depended on it. They nilled a team that had scored goals for fun against the best in this country and in Europe last season. We struggled to keep a clean sheet against teams that got relegated. Give credit where credit's due. If you only watch one team in a game you'll never really learn anything about football. How did we go on in the FA Cup ? Just remind me.
  21. Not a thing. Is he any better than Downing or Williams ? All that says to me is our " War Chest " looks like being a handful of magic beans.
  22. Yeah, it's like all those footballers we called tossers until they pulled on a Rovers shirt, The Bellamy's, Dickov's, Savage's of this world. They were all great then ! Don't your personal prejudices cloud your judgement when you're looking at football players and managers.
  23. So is Ronaldo but I don't let that get in the way of my judgement of him as a great footballer. Maybe Cook has something to be arrogant about. I watched them beat City in the FACup last season, Rovers couldn't have done that.
  24. Like him or loathe him Cook's a good manager at this level. He'll keep them up no problem.
