  1. Yeah Trippier was poor after half time, I can only assume the injury that drove him off was already starting to affect him. For those old enough to remember tonight's game put me in the mind of the England v West Germany quarter final in 1970.
  2. If Modric had have played for us and Alli or Lingard for Croatia we would have won by a couple of goals.
  3. Sorry mate, we were outmuscled lots of times in the second half and extra time. Our lads are used to Premier League refereeing were it's getting to be almost a non contact sport. Every little touch is a free kick. In this comp referees have been letting lots go and to win the ball you've got to put a foot in.
  4. Not enough creativity. We only made half chances after half time. Just as well we're out, France would have battered us.
  5. We're getting bullied out of this, they are stronger.
  6. Really poor second half. This lot are giving us a passing lesson. Alli, Lingard are just lightweights in a game like this. We're taking a knife to a gun fight. They keep appealing for fouls that aren't , this is World Cup semi final not Man U v Spurs. We'll see what we're made of now.
  7. The chance that Lingard missed was a bad miss. Imagine what would happen if a ball like that fell to Modric.
  8. Perhaps Giroud should look like an international class footballer, then he might get positive reviews. He sticks out like a sore thumb in that team. How he gets in past Benzema I'll never know.
  9. Santos were beating the best European teams easily in the play off games where the South American champions played the European Cup winners back in the day.
  10. In those " friendlies " everybody was busting a gut to beat Santos and keep Pele quiet. Not many did.
  11. Technically maybe he could. Where Mbappe stands out is his imagination and ability to see passes and moves were nobody else can. That's why he reminds me of Pele.
  12. Sad to see two great players down there at the bottom. Didi and Gerson were two of the best midfield playmakers I ever saw. Like our Tugay in style, they could run the show without ever having to bust a gut and their range of passes was tremendous.
  13. I was really impressed with what I saw last night. He has everything that the young Pele had plus explosive pace and a bit more size. It's really up to him how far he goes in the game. If he looks after himself he could be right up there with Pele. He needs to cut out the play acting though. The other Ronaldo was some player as a kid, only injuries hampered his career.
  14. Yeah Varane was outstanding, he got his head onto everything at the back. He had Lukaku in his back pocket all night. Watching him and the other centre back if we were to play them we wouldn't have it all our own way at set pieces. They're strong all over the park, only Giroud is a weak link.
  15. That's what you get with Lukaku. He's either devasting or completely anonymous. Tonight what the latter. DeBruyne was pretty poor also. Chadli was no substitute for the usual fullback. Hazard ran all night but you can't beat teams on your own. Mbappe looks to have the makings of a real player if he can keep his ego in check
  16. Just look at his career progression, or lack of it, since he left Ewood. He was bobbins for us. I would have thought we'd enough back up for Nyambe already. What I'd like to see is us sign is players that are better than what we already have not more fringe players.
  17. He was garbage at Rovers and he's gone backwards since then.
  18. True, but that was then, subsequently they've changed their system.
  19. They've been trying to get Modric further forward because he can really hurt teams. They've brought in Brozovic as a defensive midfielder so they can do this but it means they have to play with one striker instead of two. If Southgate can come up with a plan to negate their midfield I'll really be impressed.
  20. Nah, I do that in my " Paul & Shark " polo's. it's not the price that puts me off it's the design and the quality. We haven't had a decent shirt for years. The last one I considered worth buying was the " Uhlsport- CIS " shirt that I still wear.
  21. I can't see Southgate changing anything. If we had the personnel in the squad to make significant changes he might do but we haven't. We haven't a player to man mark Modric. It's a specialised role and not many players have that ability. They way the refs are these days and the way clever players draw and exaggerate fouls no marker would last the whole game. The days of Nobby Stiles giving Eusebio a good kicking and staying on the pitch are long gone. The way Modric gets about the pitch whoever marked him would be very tired by the end of the game. He must be an Olympic class athlete as well.
  22. You mustn't have been watching the same game as me then. All I can remember of Alli in the first half is a succession of miss placed passes. Second half he got involved more but he's a show pony for me. As you say who would we replace him with ? There's no answer to that one.
  23. There's not enough end product with Lingard and Alli for me, Lingard especially is too easily shrugged off the ball in my opinion. He's used to playing in the Premier League were every little push is a free kick. In this World Cup pretty strong challenges have been allowed and he's not up to the challenge. Young looks what he his, a winger being asked to play full back. It's a bit like us playing Conway there. Having to keep coming back onto his right foot is slowing us down. That second or two it takes to change feet is the difference between Kane being marked or not being marked. If you can't land a corner accurately you shouldn't be taking them. That's a given for me. Stirling looks like he could go the rest of his career for England and not score a goal. He doesn't even look like scoring. Look at the golden chances he's had this tournament. He's fluffed the lot and badly fluffed them at that. He's the sort of player that can do the instinctive things well but give him time to think and he invariably takes the wrong option.
  24. If we are to progress to the final we need to respect possession more. Our passing was very sloppy at times yesterday with Alli especially being guilty of not finding a red shirt. We also started the game very slowly and we were playing walking football almost right from the off. That was exactly what Sweden wanted us to do. I think we always play better when we up the tempo. Against Croatia if we play at a slow tempo they'll just pass through and around us. I was surprised to see a team playing with three centre backs and a midfield sweeper get opened up several times down the centre by simple through balls. Croatia will be looking to exploit that weakness. Another issue is we have a top class goal scorer in Kane yet the supply to him was almost non existent in the last two game. His hold play is great when he drops deep but ideally we need him going in the other direction. I think if everyone is fit we'll start with the same 11 that started yesterday but I remain to be convinced regarding several players. Lingard, Alli, Stirling, Young to name a few names. I'm concentrating on the negatives because the positives take care of themselves.
  25. It's wether we want to risk signing a player who's just had a serious injury which was one of a series of similar injuries. For me it's a loan or we look elsewhere.
