  1. Seem to remember Keeley taking pelters from Jimmy Hill for upending Lil Fucillo on a frozen pitch, I wasn't far away and he hit him so hard he ended up vertically hitting the pitch head first. Ironically given the Everton connection I also remember Keeley being absolutely bamboozled in the derby game against Liverpool when he got sent off whilst on loan which proved a godsend as he came back and signed a new contract with Rovers. Agree that Branthwaite needs to learn, we could do with another experienced CB but he's started ok for me.
  2. Branthwaite dodged a red card (might've been yellow) and a penalty. We would have been screaming for it if it had been the other way around. As Mowbray said he is a young lad and there was no intent that I could see but the ref missed it. However to see how Warnock behaved at the end of the game was very poor. I've seen him send players out to kick an opposition player out of the game and he is an exponent of intimidating the opponents with niggly fouls and off the ball trips and pulls, he's used that successfully at every club he has been at. He is like Allardyce, effective but very ugly. My problem with him is that he is a complete hypocrite. Because of that I really enjoyed seeing him seethe and rant, he is a 'win at all costs' manager who wouldn't mind seeing half his team red carded if the result came out - even if so many got sent off that the game was abandoned (Battle of Bramall Lane - Wikipedia). Final thought was a few seconds before the incident Assombalonga took a blatant dive whilst dragging Travis' shirt off. If the referee had seen that it would have been a Rovers free kick, Assombalonga booked and no injury to Fry. Referees miss things, they are human. Not that Warnock would have complained if 'Boro had been awarded a penalty then. As for Rovers? Absolutely delighted to see they could scrap and claw their way to a victory, great football in the build up to the goal. Thought Lenihan was immense, best game so far from Douglas and Travis looked like he was almost back to his best. The subs really made an impact as well, I think Brereton is a key player for us now and Gallagher was doing what was needed. Nice cameo from Dack. The goalie problem looks answered with Kaminski, a day for defenders to come good but loved seeing Rothwell hurl himself to block a shot.
  3. I can understand why there was a change of positions in the front three, we all knew that Pulis would have done his preparation and playing Armstrong wide with Elliott as a false 9 was worth a go but that needed to change earlier when it was clear that progress wasn't being made. Brereton has been missed, he carries the ball in a way that Gallagher can't and has much more movement. Bearing in mind how Brereton has been slaughtered by many on this forum in previous seasons it shows players can change opinions by performances, he also has youth on his side. I'm also sure that Dack would have only had a cameo role if we had been ahead but what a breath of fresh air when he came on, some very clever over the top passes which turned Wednesday around. Makes you wonder why some of the other players didn't try that. Not enough pace and zip before that, Holtby has slipped from his great early season form and Johnson is s-l-o-w and looks at full stretch too many times. Douglas is easily the biggest disappointment for me, a stand-out player at Wolves and my mates who are Leeds fans rated him highly - they were surprised that Bielsa let him go - I'm not now. Bell isn't the best left back in the world but he is more athletic and should start in the next game. Douglas always feels like he has a critical error in him all the time, his passing is average and his set-pieces (wasn't he supposed to be a specialist?) have made me wonder whether the word disappointing is adequate. I would hope we haven't committed to signing him permanently. The one saving grace is that we do have players that can pull something out of nothing - Rothwell gets me excited because he is direct when he has the ball. Frustrated Rovers Fan seems to be our normal state nowadays, probably because this squad (apart from the depth of the defence) looks like the best set of players we've had in a while. I look on with interest as to who starts the next game.
  4. Excellent performance, several players are now beginning to shine - Brereton, Wharton, Gallagher. Really delighted to see Wharton handling the physical side well. WE need to take this performance into the next two home games, Barnsley and Millwall need to be dealt with just as effectively. TM is going to have some selection headaches now. Preston were lucky to get nil.
  5. Nice to see a midfielder from abroad with long flowing locks passing the ball about - a poor mans Tugay perhaps?
  6. Going well at the moment, Rovers deserve the lead. Rafferty paid the price for being wrong side.
  7. Never had a real hatred of PNE, plenty of mates supported them and we shared a dislike of Burnley. Mind you it may be that I was influenced by one of the funnier events I saw at a game back in the 70's. I was in the enclosure (or whatever it was called at Deepdale - might have been the paddock) with a couple of mates. Before the game kicked off there was a sparse crowd in there, a mixture of Blue and Whites, and North Enders. Stood at the front was a couple, Rovers fans, late middle-aged with the lady carrying a big hand-bag. Behind them was a semi-inebriated Prestonian who, not surprising given it was the 70's, was pouring out a mixture of bile and obscenities. Lady turns round "no need for the potty mouth, stop swearing", drunken Prestonian to the man stood next to the lady "you should tell your wife to f.......", lady swings hand-bag into his face. To this day I wondered whether she had a house brick in it as the drunk fell backwards, cracking his head on the barrier behind him and collapsing on the floor. As he rose, apoplectic with rage and screaming more obscenities he realised that everyone (PNE fans included) were rolling about laughing and a couple of rather large PNE lads were standing over him. They explained fairly succinctly that he should move on and stop shaming their club. Away he skulked. A couple of things, it was pure slapstick comedy and would have made YouTube gold, the other was the fact that it was Prestonians who got rid of him, although the lady looked more than capable of that if needed. Bearing in mind the 70s was a hairy period to follow your club away from home it was nice to see. Personally I think mickey-taking is fine and my mates will be the first to let me know if PNE win - and I will return the favour (much overdue) but so long as we don't degenerate back to the mindless violence that went on back then. I know it hasn't disappeared with those lot up the M65 but after all they are a Yorkshire club. Anyway - come on Rovers!!
  8. Evans had a much better 2nd half against Forest (1st half was pants) when the formation moved to him and Johnson acting as defensive midfielders. I'd expect the same tonight with Holtby being the key pivot on the attack. I'd expect the intention to be to keep it tight for the first half but who knows really ......
  9. Scrappy goal but seemed to be coming
  10. That's a poor half, too many sloppy passes and a very pedestrian midfield performance. I have to think that might be down to the mix of the midfield 3. Evans does look off it at the moment. Credit to Hughton who's got Forest well organised which is putting Rovers off. Armstrong is dealing with scraps and if anyone looks likely at the moment it's Brereton. Need more dynamism and slick passing in midfield if we are going to get anything today, more worried that Forest look the more likely.
  11. I agree it takes a whole season before the jury is out, but so far so good. The point I was trying to make is that we went into this transfer window needing a CM and another CB, Johnson and Holtby are, in my opinion, showing we don't need another CM, Williams form excludes the need of another CB. The signings made look very promising with Dolan a wildcard win at the moment - I know, too early to tell .... Extrapolate your 'pointless' comment and you could say anything on this Board is pointless
  12. We do have a new player being added to the squad before December - I believe he's called Bradley Dack ......... The player who really needs to buckle down and perform consistently and effectively in the current structure is Joe Rothwell. You have to say Bradley Johnson has been a revelation this season and Lewis Holtby is looking like the player we hoped he would be. Both have stepped up a level in consistency and effectiveness from last season. Joe Rothwell shows potential, is exciting when he carries the ball forward in the final third but is inconsistent and if I was facing a firing squad I would hope he was in it. The system Rovers are playing (4-3-3) seems to be bringing the best out of the team, add that to see the really heartening performances by Williams at centre-back means that the one position I think Rovers need to sign a player to help improve the side is left-back. As discussed there are free agents out there that might fit the bill. I am a little concerned about the right back slot but we will see on that. Also well done to the European scouting team as the signing of two goalies shows.
  13. I thought Brereton had a good half, different view I guess. The Cardiff set up is intended to stifle Rovers and it's ended u[p with the strikers needing to work with scraps. Rothwell needs to be more varied, he's great when he is attacking players but he just has to 'beat' another man .......
  14. Fine half from Williams - do we need another CB?
  15. Very solid from Brereton, looks stronger and has provided an outlet when needed. Perhaps his adoption of a hairstyle of Danny Graham is the key?
  16. Fair comment, Williams looks composed and in position when needed. Given the aerial blitz early on that is a very positive performance.
  17. The reality for local radio or press is that they need to keep good relations up with the club to maintain access - there can be questions and challenge but not at the emotional level of a fan. It also means that some things are kept off air as it won't help the discussion. If Mowbray wants to say something Radio Lancashire and the LT give him a platform, if he won't then there isn't much they can do. The nationals don't have the same problem but unfortunately they don't take much notice of clubs outside of the Premier and, ironically, they have the same issues of access when it comes to the top flight clubs. It was always thus, if Andy Bayes was blocked from Ewood it would be bad for his job but also fur us as we would get even less information. If you don't like it just reach for the switch. But - the failure to strengthen the defence is the real issue, not the reporting. I doubt if anyone would give a proverbial if we'd added a solid LB and CH ..............
  18. At the moment the Championship is in a degree of limbo given the ongoing discussions around a salary cap. Add to that the uncertainty of the impact of Covid-19 costs on costs and income in the upcoming season which is about to start then whoever is manager at Ewood would be facing a real challenge. Mind you, that comment applies to every club outside of the Premier League. If the owners have agreed to continue to support the losses at Rovers without looking for a reduction in payroll and/or sale of key assets then I will breathe a sigh of relief for the next season. There has been no direct statement yet that has answered those questions but I take a positive view that there has been no indication otherwise. Rovers may well be in a better state than several other Championship clubs, we might find that several clubs start the season with points penalties as well as financial challenges. Nonetheless players leaving (Centre Half, Keeper in particular) and areas of weakness (Left Back?) need attention. It would be a real bonus if the Academy can deliver some answers, even if it is only to provide solid understudies for those positions. Pears might be an option for keeper, I hear all the usual complaints about Mowbray going back to players he knows but doesn't every manager? I don't like the idea of a loan keeper, personally I would prefer an experienced goalie, keepers reach their peaks as they approach 30. Like it or not we will have to expect some gambles - players leaving clubs having lost their place due to injury and so a risk (maybe Cunningham as the left back), inexperienced loans from top clubs etc.. This is likely to be a very frustrating transfer window but we aren't alone. I really hope that some players and their agents realise that the world has changed, likewise Premiership clubs who expect too much of a contribution from a loan. I'm glum but feel we have to accept the situation. It would be lovely (if miraculous) for Brereton and Gallagher to deliver, I also wouldn't write Amari Bell off yet.
  19. Managers get judged on their buys, he has had some successes (Dack, Armstrong for example) but Gallagher and Brereton have been disappointing. Overall I think TM has made some costly mistakes, Venkys did back him to do that but some players really need to take a hard look at themselves over the break because we need them to improve as I can't see anyway to recoup the spend. Grim stuff.
  20. Given the plight of Wigan I don't want to dump Venkys - last time I looked Rovers needed their cash. Mind you, if you know a reliable billionaire.......
  21. Time for many drinks. Keep safe distance though - like Rovers defending
  22. Painful week, where next I wonder with some of the team? As this season is effectively over it must be time to let some of the younger players have a chance? I'd even try a three at the back in the absence of any left-backs.
  23. So Bennett is going off, he actually played ok so far as well - ironic.
  24. Sat here, a son of the Red Rose from Blackburn, exiled in Bradford I have no love for Leeds (I discover via the Yorkshire Post that they are nicknamed the Peacocks), a history of corruption and cheating in the Revie years really set me against them. I learned to loathe them because they had one of the most talented squads in Div 1 but still felt it was right to injure opponents, swarm around the referee (first team to adopt that as a standard tactic) and even then Revie felt he needed to influence the opposition outside of the match (according to Gary Sprake - allegedly of course). I don't think we are strong enough to do them today but I don't care how we win - a scabby penalty, an own goal, I do not give a ****! Come on Rovers!
