Good post. You articulated my thoughts far better than I could. Think it'll be possession for possession's sake. No doubt he'll knock a few cracking 50 yard floating diagonals that show his quality but don't threaten the opposition.

He had a loan spell at Rochdale last season where he played 2 league games. Also remember seeing him get hooked after 30 minutes in an FA cup tie for them after an appalling performance (think it was against Newcastle) where the lad Mattheson had an absolute stormer and subsequently signed for Wolves.

Joe, you work in player stats, if you have those for Downing's km per game early and late in the season that will rebuff the argument. I'd certainly be interested in seeing them even though it's his sharpness that concerns me more.

Downing was a very good footballer but unless he is cover for LB I don't see how he fits into a 4-3-3. I'm with those that think his legs have gone I'm afraid and a short passing high intensity style will pass him by in midfield.

Shit or bust this season, talk of slow build or work in progress is total folly with loan players and contracts expiring. Not a chance we will go up defending like that. We also need a right hard bastard on the pitch who can crack a few heads - we're just too nice.

Mowbray just cannot set us up to defend and we're now 3 years in. JRC cruelly exposed every time they go forward and the keeper is hardly filling me with confidence.
