v Sunderland (h) - 26/12/2024
Andy replied to chaddyrovers's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Yeah, this. He cost us so many points last season, with his performances. However, aided by a much more organised defence this season, he's done well. Recent games especially, he's looked a very competent GK at this level. -

Have to say, that's a brilliant first half. Quick and aggressive in attack; if we had a forward who could finish, we'd be 3-0 or 4-0 up at HT. Haven't missed Trav, which is a big compliment to Baker and the back line are very well drilled. JE has this spot on so far. Big test of our intentions this season and, after 45 minutes, so far so good. -
Nope, his finishing ability is on par with Gallagher. He's aggressive and decent in the air, but he's shite in front of goal - genuinely not much difference in playing Maktar.

Yeah, agreed - I understand keeping a winning side, but I think Beck on the left, ACD on the right and Cantwell would have been the best option. Hindsight, I guess. -

Has been all season, in my opinion. -
You clearly didn't read what I actually wrote. We had not been anywhere near a relegation fight when JE took over. We'd spent the first portion of the season around the play off places. We played several teams around/below us at home under JE and failed to win a single game. As a result of the above, we went into the final game expecting to do down to League 1. We ended up staying up by the skin of our teeth. 'Delusional' would be trying to spin any of the above as a positive. And, once again, he's done an outstanding job this season. But let's not rewrite history.

Honestly, I'd rather see a full Blackburn End than a half full Walkersteel / Riverside / whatever it's called these days. And it's good to see the numbers for this upcoming game, with plenty of time to sell more before the match. Shows how fickle football fans are. Success will always bring the people to the ground. If we were ever promoted back to the Prem, we'd be getting crowds like we did previously.
-
Yes, I was, absolutely. For good reason. Our results - and performances weren't good enough. We had not been anywhere near a relegation battle when he came in. We ended up staying up by the skin of our teeth, courtesy of a freak result away to Leicester. Whitewashing history benefits nobody. And again, he's done excellently well this season. But I'm not going to pretend that his failure to win a single home game in that entire period of the season was anything other than a very closely avoided disaster.

His record last season, as well as our general performances were very valid reasons to be critical. We did not win a single home game under him in the entire time he was here last season, despite playing several teams around/below us. I will caveat that with some very impressive away wins at Leeds and Leicester. However. This season has been an unmitigated success, to date. Early performances weren't the best, yet we still picked up some decent wins. Then following a little run of defeats, we've gone on this 6-game winning streak - and we have shown a bit of everything. Grit to grind out wins in dull games, flowing football leading some great team goals and we look a greater sum of our parts than we ever did under JDT (or TM). My gut feeling says that he's trying to leverage this wave of success by trying to find another job, either closer to his home, or in the Prem. But either way, this season I feel that he's answered a lot of questions some fans had about him. I think he's doing an excellent job right now.

John Eustace - our head coach
Andy replied to chaddyrovers's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
I've said this quite recently already, but it does concern me more than a little bit that JE's agent has JE linked with literally anything and everything. He's either going into business for himself, in the pursuit of the dollar, or JE has given him the instruction to do this. It's not a coincidence either way. -

Andy replied to Herbie6590's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
I'm not being Rovers-biased when I say this, but he needs the rest of the season with us to continue his development. Ideally then another season with a mid-to-lower end Prem team before looking to establish himself as a first teamer for Liverpool. Definitely has the potential though, has the base of everything in his locker. -

Tronstad was integral to how we played today, as he has been during this recent run. He was very good throughout the whole game. It's bizarre that this needs spelling out. -

Andy replied to Herbie6590's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Surely you'd have to be straight up trolling to believe that Tronstad hasn't been excellent - and incredibly consistent - for us since signing (barring some dodgy early performances). He's objectively one of our best players and first names on the team sheet, for good reason. -

Admittedly Luton were shite, but I think it's more of a reflection of how well we played. The boys look confident at the moment and it shows in their play. Genuinely fancied both Beck and ACD to score today, but didn't believe enough to stick a fiver on it... What a run of form this is, all credit to the manager and the players. Keeps showing Matt Smith on the iFollow thing. Wasn't there a link of him being interesting in fronting a consortium, or did I dream that...? -
It does worry me slightly that his name is thrown into literally any Championship job discussion these days, even the likes of Stoke and Preston. Either his agent is going rogue in the hunt for coin, or JE is giving the 'ok' for his agent to get him linked to everything around.

v Sheffield Wednesday (a) - 10/12/2024
Andy replied to Upside Down's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Disregarding the obvious Burnley in the room, how nice is it to see all northern teams as the top 6? 4 consecutive away games; I'd assumed the last time we did it was back in the Prem winning season. Turns out we did it last year under JDT, which only highlights how far we fell in the 2nd half of last season. The solidity of the defence this season gives me hope that we won't see a repeat. And, again, you can't not give credit to Pears for recent performances / clean sheets. -

Really pleased with that, another ugly 1-0 away win. Enjoy those as much as any flowing, pretty on the eye performance. 5 wins on the spin, 4 consecutive away wins. Comfortably 5th, win our game in hand and we're a point from our 6-fingered friends, leading into that game at Ewood. Delighted to see Mak score, thought the penalty decision was stonewall. Why did Sheffield bring on a 50-odd-year-old man in the second half (that tubby moustached guy)? Fair fucks to Eustace, what he's getting out of this squad is nothing short of remarkable at this stage. -
v Hull City (a) - 07/12/2024
Andy replied to Upside Down's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
First game of the season I missed completely, but sounds like it might not have been a bad thing. 4 consecutive wins (3 of those being away) and 3 consecutive clean sheets, is an incredible achievement. I had big questions of Eustace last season, when he couldn't find a win in several home games against teams in and around us. But this season has been a massive success so far, with his ability to organise a defence and set up a team for each given match being the main reason for this. Really pleasing to say that I was wrong about him. -

I do think Baker has shown enough in cameos to deserve a go. Conversely JRC has been shite when he's played this season, not sure what's happened to him. Maybe another confidence player. And Buckley hasn't shown enough when he's played. -

Such an unpredictable away game at the best of times. But having just sacked their manager, it adds that extra level. I think you have to stick with whoever can play from the Leeds game, based on how well they did. Baker would seem to be the natural replacement for Trav, in terms of style? -
v Leeds United (h) - 30/11/2024
Andy replied to Herbie6590's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Agreed on all points. Quite a bit of whitewashing going on here. Raya was a good shotstopper for us, but was underdeveloped in others and nowhere near the GK he became at Brentford, never mind now. And to suggest that the Sheffield disaster was an isolated incident is madness. Pears was costing us goals - along with the Swedish lad when he played - on a consistent basis last season. Even yesterday, his direct error very nearly cost us a goal. Then his kicking was a mixed bag at best, with 3 going directly out for a Leeds throw, deep into injury time, when we needed to keep possession. Pears has been much better this season against his previous standard, but to suggest that last season was not horrific from him - or that he still doesn't have a clanger in him - is just plainly wrong. -
v Leeds United (h) - 30/11/2024
Andy replied to Herbie6590's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Yeah, Pears has benefitted from a more structured and well-drilled defence this season, but he's nowhere near Kaminski levels. TK was a superb GK for this level (and a good one at Prem level, in fairness). -
That's a good point - one thing BBD always had/has is intelligent runs between the lines. Wharton found him numerous times in a way that I think Cantwell would do. Not sure I can see it happening, but it would be one that would make sense.

Is this in relation to Tronstad? He's been consistently a 7 or 8 in almost every game he's played for us. Objectively one of the best signings we've made in recent years.
