Just seen this..... Memories from more than 50 years ago are fading but I remember him as a reserve to Blacklaw. I'm surprised he was our No 1 in 1966-67 which wasn't a bad season as we were near the top most of the time. I can only say our defence must have been good! I remember standing in the shed behind the bowler's arm at East Lancs CC. One of the wags shouted as the EL wicketkeeper dived and missed a ball down the leg side: "have you been wtaching Barton?". I sincerely hope that it isn't true. Paying £6m would be a huge gamble. We grossly overpaid for Brereton and Gallagher but the club doesn't seem to learn from its past mistakes. In the past a player like Obafemi with multiple issues hanging over him would be a free transfer. Saints want Armstrong badly - for once the cards are in our favour and we should play it tough.

You'd have to hope we wouldn't be paying any transfer fee at all. There's so many question marks over Obafemi and spending that sort of money would not make much sense and represents a serious financial risk. He's worth a gamble on a free, but that's all

We had a good defence that season! Barton just didn't look like a goalkeeper. He wouldn't be a pro these days I'm sure. Our list of poor goalkeepers is quite long....longer probably than the good ones we've had.

Yes I forgot. Butcher. He was poor ....he dropped the ball more often than he caught it and it makes you wonder how some players actually became professionals. But in terms of sheer uselessness, Barton has to be the worst. Looked like a rugby league forward with about the same mobility.
