i hope gilsenen gets a club and starts afresh, though if the club thought he could get 100% fit in the unrelenting championship i don` think they`de have released him him, think barnes will now drop into non league, cruel game football -
He’s off then?

I think hes just got back playing again recently. I'm sure i saw a tweet from Barrow about it. Couple of sub apps but it's a start 🤞 Edit: didn't realise he'd been released (as per the above post) -

Shame about Gilsenan getting released. Thought he had potential but his career has been hampered by injuries. Still would've triggered that one-year extension and then trying to find a National League or League Two club to sell to and insert a 40-50 % sell-on clause. Only 22 so can imagine him reaching perhaps Championship level one day if he stays injury-free for the next few years. -
ok, I will rephrase, worst realistic scenario Do you honestly believe that given his first half season this year, a club towards the top of League 2 doesn't want to take him on a free and half his wages?
-
Surely worst case scenario is we give him the contract, spend £250k on wages over a season and no-one comes in for him.

I genuinely do not think so. He will be on £5K/week (at most), Which equates to a maximum of about £250K over the course on next season. Even if as worst case scenario, we ended up giving him a free transfer (with a hefty sell on %) to Chesterfield pr similar and covering half of his wage for the remainder of his contract, I would fancy being able to recoup more than a few hundred K with a sell on which would still more than pay for itself And that would we worst case scenario. He has more than proved himself at League 2 level, so I would be pretty confident that someone at league 1 level would be willing to take a punt, and cover most/all of his wage, and even pay a small up front fee. again with a sell on % Personally though, I expect his option will be triggered and he will be a squad player next season, whilst being talked up as Dolans ready made replacement all through the summer

They certainly were. I was sat up in the Nuttall Street stand because I’d broken my leg playing football and I had a full pot on. It was May 15th 1982. The Chelsea lads, all dressed in ‘casuals’ posh gear, walked right past me and I can remember telling a few of them to mind my leg. They were really polite and seemed nothing like football hooligans. They then proceeded to shin down over the front row and dropped onto the terracing in the Blackburn End enclosure and, from there, into the Blackburn End. How the Blackburn End ran away from that lot, I’ll never know. -
Isnt that a risk though, in that his contract having signed for a fee is presumably at least reasonable at Championship level, so he could sit on it or it might put off suitors only able to pay a % of his wage?

In all fairness, it was announced by Jackson, not the club. So Gilsenan would already have been advised prior to his birthday... should that worry you in the slightest -
Even in that situation, it would be better to activate the renewal, if a club is interested (ie Chesterfield) allow him to move on a free but with a sell on clause, just in case he has a stellar half season at some point and he moves for a fee in the future Everybody wins that way

Even if we get a few hundred thousand it's worth taking up the option.
