modes98 Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Not regularly though did he? Paul Robinson Game history, he appeared for the majority of last season. According to the spurs site he appeared 37 times, 25 out of 38 league games. Not bad for an out of favour keeper. I think Winterburn is a good addition to the staff, but i suppose only time will tell. He knows what it's like at the highest level in the premiership. I agree it's a long list but as long as they all do their jobs well I'm not massively fussed.

Eddie Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 And why would we have to spend "a fortune" on a nother keep4er in 2 years time. If Villa can get the quality of Brad for £2.5 I'd certainly pay it if I were them..... ....and 50k a week!
Majiball Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Because ... the whole team works as a unit. What does it say that we now have a specialised defensive coach, alongside an assistant manager and a first team coach? Are they incapable of coaching our defenders? Do UEFA badges not cover defensive coaching? Why is it that most teams don't have a specialist defensive coach? The defence don't play separately to the rest of the team ... you defend as a unit. so why take a bits and pieces approach? Its pretty standard in italy! Yes teams should defend as a unit from the front etc, but thats not always the case, Rovers training will involve the team being seperated Winterburn will take the defence for times and working on them with the keeper, there is no point in involving the whole team in practicing playing offside etc. Winterburn was part of one of the best defensive units in prem history, he must surely have the knowledge to gel our back four. PS don't put so much stock in the badges, Ince has made a wise move in bringing in someone who, was an instrumental part of one of the best defenses ever, So Winterburn in as defensive coach, does he have any coaching expirience? I guess it can't be worse than what we did had because our defense was all over the place last season. I think its his first job, but after Graham and Wenger he should know his stuff!
RevidgeBlue Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Some good points but I think it's the unseemly haste with which Ince is shoving long serving, fans favourite Freidel out the door that grates with most people. According to Jason Kayley in today's LT. "The LT reported on Saturday that Friedel had been offered a bumper pay rise and an extra year on his contract as Ince seeks to stave off interest from Villa and Hughes's Manchester City." That would hardly qualify as "shoving him out of the door" would it. (Although tbh I think it's more a case of the usual Monday garbage from the LT in the absence of Andy Neild. It might be Jason hasn't even bothered to read properly what Andy Neild wrote on Saturday. Andy wrote that Villa had made the extended offer, City were prepared to match it but that Brad only had a two year deal at Rovers. Although we were prepared to review the situation in twelve months time.)

Also with the head of youth recruitemnt from liverpool joining we must surely have a good knowledge of some top youngsters now to get in for the academy, Liverpool sign players from all over the world constantly, he must still have connections.
Ewood and I Would Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 ....and 50k a week! I'd happily pay Brad that for two years, besides it's not like "big time" Robinson will come for free, his agent will milk the England No.1 stuff and I can't imagine he was on a lot less than that at Spurs and equally not taking too much of a pay cut either to be honest.
Iceman Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 why are we even paying for Robinson that much,if that is the value....i would have thought something like 2Mill would do the trick....sell bents for 17.buy in Robinson for 2Mill..leaves us with 15 mill, give arsenal 5 mill, and leaves us with 10mill..is this 50% to Arsenal even true?

Ewood and I Would Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Read into this what you will. (Roque) http://www.myfootballnews.co.uk/news_jump.html?story=843604 Hmm always hard to tell the context when something has been translated. It sounds reasonably positive but I'm sure some journo's could pick at it and be selective. Setanta have been positive but you could easily write an article saying he would like to move but won't moan if he doesn't. Afterall he concedes we are a "small club" and instead of saying I have no intention of moving he says "IF I don't leave I'll do my best for Rovers"... However it does seem more positive than Benni/Bentley interviews of the past for sure!!!

modes98 Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I'd love to see how many clean sheets Robinson has kept compared to Friedel in the last few years though. Right, here we go. Year Robinson Brad 07/08 13 13 06/07 21 17 05/06 20 19 04/05 19 18 and 07/08 Robinson only played 25 league games. and yes i am suprised that he beats brad every year, it does cover every competitive game played in that football year. I thought Brad would have been on top at least once.
BuckyRover Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Right, here we go. Year Robinson Brad 07/08 13 13 06/07 21 17 05/06 20 19 04/05 19 18 Brilliant!

Hughesy Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Yeah, but no but.... he was out of form (by his standards and own admission) last season, yet still secured the same amount of clean sheets as Brad and played in 13 less games!! Ouch! Robbo for Rovers!
socngill Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Right, here we go. BuckyRover Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 was that not also in front of a shaky defence During the worst period of his career, he had more clean sheets than Brad. We were on a par with Spurs over this period. I didn't expect those figures. His reputation has been ruined by the media.

mick Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 winterburn is a top drawer man. i think that what he stated in the guardian article about being a defensive coach is encouraging. he played with tony adams and he is a valuable member of the pompey staff. i don't see harry complaining about the work that he has done there. if we can get the best out of worthington then he will be a graet addition to the ewood staff. if we step back and take a good look, ince is surrounding himself with people who have had excellent cv's as players and bring that same passion to running a team. i was not in favour of ince, however, so far he hasn't put a foot wrong. perhaps a new exciting brand of football wil be played by the mighty rovers; something that their fans have been starved of for some time. on another note, mark hughes has achieved sainthood for what he achieved. i think that fans should appreciate what he did but not go over the top when celebrating what he achieved. not a single trophy was won. it was the right time for the man to leave as i do not think that he could improve. he had become stale and his coaching staff needed improving. these are perhaps the ideas that endeared ince to the board in his interviews; ones about progressive coaching techniques to take a club forward and get the best out of existing players. looking forward to some exciting football played by the rovers...europe here we come!!!
krislu Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Wait for the chorus of "yeah but no, but yeah but no...... HE IS RUBBISH I HATE HIM, THE FIGURES ARE WRONG, BRAD STAY FOREVER!!!!" Those figures, presented alone like that, have pretty much no value when judging who's the better goalkeeper. Its like saying having a return on your investment of 10k is better than having a retrun on 8k with no more information given.
