The only reason he is being let go is because he has a slot - it’s inept from the club

what will be more inept is if we sign koji miyoshi knowing we didn’t need to free up a spot if we signed him before he came on for Bochum over a week ago

or we sign Baradji who I think is rudys top target and he’s not ready to kick a ball until oct/nov time

so of the two positions were after only one slot available so one will need to meet the criteria and going by the summer recruitment so far I think their struggling

I still feel an appeal on Miyoshi would have a strong chance of success. The problem is it would take time for it to go through the appeal process, and in the meantime we wouldn't know if we could sign Baradji or whoever else.

Youve clearly not read my post or understood my point.

It ws about using up an ESC slot on an under 21 gamble when we clearly had plans to look abroad for signings.

When Mafoumbi arrived I don't think the plan was to look abroad for signings particularly Obviously Eustace was in charge and we all know the age/ profile of player he wanted and it wasn't foreigners.

The change of thinking  to overseas players has only happened this Summer

That would make it even worse for me like why not just get him before he played (I know it’s rovers)

I don't thing we have struggling at all this summer in terms of the type of player we want.

On Miyoshi, without knowing what has actually what gone on there.

In order to maintain 4 esc slots after this season, English qualifying players (EQP) would need to play in at least 35% of minutes in the Championship for Rovers this season.  This equates to a little under 16000 minutes.  Any less, and the number of allocated esc slots will drop.

This may be an issue.  Following the departure of Brittain, Dolan, Batth etc and with seemingly Pickering & Pears no longer being regular starters, as I only see Travis & Cantwell as "guaranteed"  English qualifying starters, So even if they both remain & play in every single minute of every single Championship game, that is only just over half of these minutes (8280 minutes) & if either of those leave, they are likely to be replaced by an non qualifying player.

Whilst some of those remaining minutes will be covered by subs./rotation etc (Carter, Wharton, Pickering, Forshaw, Tyjon, Alebiosu etc), This may be an extra reason why Gestede was so interested in increasing the minutes for U21 players (who are in the main English qualifying), as not doing so will derail any future transfer plans and leave them having to shop in more expensive (British & those who qualify for work permits automatically) markets

* Obviously this makes the rather precarious assumption that Rovers consider events at least a year in the future

** If we have 4 ESC players but our number of slots is then reduced, we can still keep those 4 ESC players (thank you WilsdenRover), although if we sell/convert them, we cannot replace those slots until our minutes are back up to the required levels

https://analyticsfc.co.uk/blog/2023/06/21/introducing-esc-the-new-gbe-guidance-opens-up-recruitment-post-brexit/

2024/25 onwards Criteria

However, from this season onwards clubs will be able to plan for the number of ESC slots that they have, with the possibility that they could only have one if the number of minutes for EQP is lower than 20%.

  Number of available ESC places
Weighted EQP minutes % Premier League Championship League One League Two
>= 35% 4 4 2 2
>= 30% 3 3 1 1
>= 25% 2 2 – –
>= 20% 1 1 – –

Sorry to come back to such a (relatively) old post.

Re the bit in bold - the reference period for calculating the additional ESC places re percentage of EQP minutes is the previous three seasons (I only just picked up on this myself).

Therefore, unless the rules change, we’d need to stay above 35% for 23-24,24-25 and this season combined to keep our entitlement to 4 places next year.

You don’t think we are struggling?
Ok right winger was our number one priority position agreed by val himself and majority of fans. Still none through the door and before you say the window is still open I am aware but ‘priority’ means it needs done first

secondly we obviously are struggling as we have ‘HAD’ to offload a player to free up a slot

we don’t obviously know but EJ reported rovers were interested one week before Bochum kicked off their season so they would (should) have known if he plays there was a likelihood the he wouldn’t automatically qualify

the type of player we want chaddy is cheap let’s call a spade a spade here. All this talk of being an athletic powerful team is much much prefer players who can actually play football also

Obviously just get him before he played, I'm just saying there's still a route. My guess though is we just couldn't agree a fee as our budget is too shit.

That would be incredibly easy for now. It would still be best if we can keep it above 35% this year to help keep those slots free in future years.

Gestede was still the tea boy at that point.

Gestede needed a pliable 'coach' back then and Eustace wasn't that. Eustace could put his foot down and got Weimann/Batth/McFadz and Cantwell by kicking off.

Bet he was delighted when Derby took him off our hands - compensation AND an opportunity to bring in someone like Ismael who will put up with more of the nonsense without kicking off.

I think we’re guaranteed to stay above the 35% ‘this time’ irrespective of how few English minutes we have this season.

However a low number this season and next would see us struggling so, as you alluded to, keeping these minutes as high as possible is crucial*

* if we’re going to continue the ‘cheap foreigners’ model.

If the aim was to get relegated then you will be right

But if the cheap foreigners play regularly they’ll be converted and won’t take up a slot. Toth won’t use a slot next season as far as I’m aware.

Kargbo also said when he joined that the deal nearly happened in that summer.

Nick posted our interest in Miyoshi a couple of days before EJ.

We dont why we haven't sign Miyoshi yet.

I do think a right winger signing should have number 1 priority this summer. Why we haven't sign yet we dont know the circumstances.

I hope we sign Miyoshi. He impressed me at Birmingham and I wanted us to sign him last summer.
