  1. A friend of mines son (was at Liverpool) went for a trial at Rovers. I saw him the other day and asked how he got on. He didn't get offered the chance to join the academy, the reasons given......''whilst technically he's one of the best players we've seen for his age, but he's not the sort of player we are after as he's not tall enough.'' A sad indictment of the current academy system, not only at Rovers but across the UK. And we wonder why we never win anything on the world stage.
  2. My recent viewings Noah - Don't bother - 3/10 Anchorman 2 - Ok, not as quotable as the first film, Very silly in parts, but watchable - 5/10 Gravity - Excellent - 9/10 Philomena - Tough watch at times, but a good film, great acting from Coogan and Dench. 7/10 Enemy Mine - An older film (80s) but under-rated, good message. 6/10 The Fisher King - Another older film. Different, but enjoyable, 7/10 Saving Mr Banks - Whimsical, good family movie, more good acting. 7/10 On the slate for the coming weeks The Butler 12 Years a Slave X Men: Days of Past
  3. As I mentioned a few weeks back, would be great if the fans sang this....
  4. Was up at the Millstone in Mellor last Saturday, the food was excellent as usual. But I'd like to tip my hat to the staff/management, my sister feinted and hit her head so an ambulance was called. The staff were professional and allowed all parties to keep their dignity. I can't thank them enough for their help. I'd also hazard a guess that no one else in the restaurant saw/heard the commotion thanks to their swift yet discreet actions.
  5. Has anyone been to see Gravity? It looks amazing, hoping it lives up to the hype it has been getting!
  6. Ate at the Bayley Arms in Hurst Green the other week, was impressed. I had a very nice club sandwich and ice cream for desert. I went with my mum who had the smoked/poached salmon salad and a creme brulee. All the dishes were excellent and the portions were well sized! Those and 4 pots of tea came to a very reasonable £30. Would recommend the pub, especially for a Sunday lunch or a Fathers/Mothers Day trip out.
  7. Alpha Papa. A must if your a Partridge fan! I loved it, but I'm probably a bit biased.
  8. Was at The Withy Arms in Bamber Bridge last night, funny name, but decent night. A bit of a retro, chic, vintage sort of feel inside, but food was good and I believe it is a CAMRA pub, very reasonably priced.
  9. A very pleasing first half display, probably the best 45 of the season. Shaky second half but defended well. Sandomierski - 7 - Didn't have much to do, but made a world class save from a header in the second half which ensured the clean sheet Kane - 8 - Got a really bright future, was excellent all night, got the balance between defense and attack just right and loves a tackle. Dann - 9 - Another imperious performance from the captain, won me over this year, the most consistent player of the season. Givet - 8 - Got better as the game wore on, battled for every ball, textbook Givet performance! Marcus Olsson - 7 - Gave the ball away cheaply on too many occasions, but still a solid performance in an unsual role. King - 7 - Another who started poorly, but showed his skill and pace in the second half, something to build on. Williamson - 9 - Man of the match performance, was fantastic in the middle, wanted the ball, tackled, got forward, moved the ball on quickly and worked his socks off. Jones - 7 - Another who put his heart and soul into the game, still relies too much on his left foot and beats himself at times, but put in a real shift Lowe - 7 - A decent performance from the young man, made a crucial block and also won a vital header in the first half. Best - 6 - Still looks a yard off the pace, and needs a goal for his confidence, but won some headers and held the ball up well at times. Rhodes - 8 - Another vintage Rhodes poachers goal, worked hard up top and on another day with more protection from the referee would have won a dozen free kicks. Classy not to celebrate and was applauded from all stands at the final whistle. Subs Pedersen - 6 - Gave the ball away too much, but his experience helped in the dying minutes Goodwillie - 6 - Actually did ok, a couple of nice touches and a decent shot on goal, has never really been given much of a chance to prove himself at this level, showed he can at least be a willing runner off the bench Dunn - 6 - Again, came on with the game on the line with 10 minutes to go, some neat touches, but the hard work had already been done by the starting 11.
  10. Would honestly prefer Rekik to Givet. His time has come and gone and I think the youngster has something to prove after a difficult time at left back. Real blow to lose Kazim, he's a real focal point and the onus is once again thrust on the shoulders of Dunn to be our outlet. Would like to see Pedersen brought in for Kazim, particularly if Morris is going to play left back. MGP offers a lot defensively and his experience can only help young Josh. Also brings the long throw ins into play, the situation the way it is, it's hardly going to be a footballing classic! Sandomierski Kane - Dann - Rekik - Morris Lowe - Williamson Dunn - Jones - Pedersen Rhodes
  11. Theno isn't your favourite local restaurant Bukhara? Their meat is halal. As for local eats, I went to the Italian in Whalley, Amico Mio, shortly before Christmas, and had a good night. Decent food, nice atmosphere, good prices and even a guitar player strumming away in the corner! Was in Preston Tiggis last week, which was decent enough, but alarmingly quiet for a Saturday night, it's days may be numbered.
  12. Moneyball on Sky. Good film for any sports fan, but especially if your a fan of baseball.
  13. Haha I think a few Roverites have been on to him. Latest tweet. And Im not referring to Blackburn
  14. Interesting tweet from Dickson. Ask yourself? Why is everyone leaving or want to leave??? Hhmm
  15. The Millstone is very good. Its always been busy on a Sunday when I have been, saying that I usually go after 6pm. If/When you go again give the Steak and Kidney Pie a try
  16. The new Batman film looks excellent. As said above, I went to watch Avengers Assemble last week, was ok, definitely watch-able. Downey Jr and Ruffalo are the most accomplished of the super hero actors, although I felt the villain was a little bland. I also think that, Scarlett Johansson must of had "must show me from behind in every scene" written into her contract! Its actually hard not to stare during the film! As for TV films, I see Total Recall has been doing the rounds on ITV2-4 recently and is a great film if anyone hasn't seen it before! Stands up pretty well to say it was made 22 years ago!
  17. Anyone been to see Avengers Assemble? Off to see it tonight, hope its good!
  18. Yeah 12 Angry Men is very good. Just updated my list Have seen all but 4 of the top 30 The four are....Schindler's List, Seven Samurai, City of God and Casablanca
  19. Watched The Ides of March yesterday. Thought it was ok, not really what I was expecting to be honest and it never really gets going as much as you'd like it to. One of those films where the trailer oversells the film.
  20. Tiggi's Its being run by Gianfranco who used to run the old restaurant in town during its late 90s heyday. He then moved to the Preston restaurant which is still going strong. If the new place can replicate the atmosphere of the old place had then I'm sure it'll be a hit.
  21. No probs Colin I went with a friend/business colleague and we both enjoyed it. The menu had changed from the last time I visited. We stuck to the set menu (3 courses for £15.95) which given the standard of food is an absolute steal. I had Hake, shoulder of lamb and a sticky toffee pudding. All were brilliant. Its nouveau cuisine, but you feel full at the end of it. The table next to ours had scallops and sole which both looked amazing, but at £13.95 and £10.95 each I suppose they should be. Its certainly worth a visiting, particularly if you are a lover of fine food or simply to try the set menu.
  22. Did you enjoy the Millstone? Off (once again) to the Freemasons at Wiswell tonight.
  23. Hope you like it! Good choice for special occasions like Anniversaries.
  24. Millstone at Mellor, similar prices, but much nicer atmosphere and food.
  25. Did you ever get those shirts sent over?
