  1. What has the quality of the Premier League, with the amount of non-British players plying their trade, got to do with the quality of the English National team? We're talking about the merits of the two leagues yet you put the England jibe in there.
  2. VAR got that one right. It looked blatant in real time. However If I was Argentinian I'd be asking why their penalty wasn't even looked at in the earlier game.
  3. There's an angle from the far corner flag where you can see the pattern of the ball change direction as he nicks it. It is subtle but definitely is there. VAR was brought in to ensure we got the big decisions right and eliminate controversy. Itsbeing used to look at margin calls and the same controversy arises. In my opinion,, plus that of a few members of the BBC team and many others it was not a penalty. Even more people agree that, with it being such a close call, VAR shouldn't overturn. Also, there were 5 minutes injury time. 6 substitutions gives 3 minutes. The ref played on for 35 seconds before then reviewing the incident, giving the penalty, booking the defender and so on. That whole incident probably took well over 2 minutes. Add in the other two VAR reviews, plus normal time added on and that game should have gone on for about 5 more minutes. Last night, Costa jumped and led with his arm for the first goal for Spain. That was reviewed and not changed despite the fact the majority of people would say it was a foul. Goal line technology has been an outstanding success. VAR needs a lot of work to avoid becoming the waste of time (literally) it currently is.
  4. Tyrone - I give up. I'm just repeating myself.
  5. He absolutely gets the ball. That's undeniable off one of the angles. And the point is whether it is clear and obvious to overturn the original decision. The debate around it says not.
  6. Goal line technology is different than VAR and is undeniably a success. How did France celebrate? They stood around waiting whilst the referee checked for a potential offside 20 seconds earlier.
  7. By current standards but not by the rules. Regardless it's the fact that VAR has overturned the on field decision that's controversial. So much for 'clear and obvious'.
  8. He slides in and gets a slight nick on the ball. Therefore it's not a penalty. Dont forget that VAR is only to be used to overturn the on pitch decision if it's a "clear and obvious error". Refs had a bit of a 'mare there.
  9. I dont know the Colombian players. I never said I did !!
  10. I don't think saying that man for man we are probably better than Colombia is getting ahead of ourselves. The problem is we are certainly better man for man than Russia and Iceland and couldn't beat them last time. For whatever reason we fail to show it in tournaments. In previus tournaments (between 96 to 2006) people were saying we had the best team in the tournament which was getting ahead of ourselves. Fortunately that's died down now.
  11. Disagree. I thought he stood out as one of the better players in the playoffs for Scunthorpe and was excellent for much of the season. Also scooped all player of the year always for Scunny. I think he would be a great signing.
  12. I thought Sam Gallagher was a bang average Champinship striker who wouldn't cut it at a higher level. I told a Brum fan this and at the end of the season he agreed completely. As an option he would be OK. Problem is because he was highly rated and at a Prem club, he has an inflated transfer fee and wages around his neck for someone who is going to be a rotating squad player for any Championship club with ambition. As for Lowe, I see some Bolton fans trotting out the "he has Prem experience and has captained a club in the championship" line. They're in for a shock. ?
  13. Add in Ferdinand and Collymore and we had some strikers available in the 90s.
  14. To be fair at least it's on topic !! ?
  15. I'm talking in general, not this season. It's because in the 80s and 90s the gap between salaries in the SPL and other major European leagues wasn't as great,so players in their prime like Laudrup and Larson may move there. Other clubs in the top flight wouldn't lose their players to relatively lower league English clubs just because they could pay seriously more in wages. However the stupid money thrown about by TV means that average players would rather turn up on £8k in the Champinship than in Scotland. That's not a fault or criticism of the Scottish league. It's just another side effect of the gross money in the game. I'm not knocking the competitiveness of the league outside of Celtic, just that the quality of players plying their trade in Scotland's is worse than in previous eras.
  16. As I posted on the last page there are reasons why the standard has fallen but it Is as poor as it has ever been. I don't think anyone ever said it was league two standard although I said league one for most clubs which I think is fair. However if there's was any up and coming young player then I'd still have a look at bringing them to a Championship club. I'd worry about any non-Celtic journeymen coming in though.
  17. I gave you 10 players and answered your question. As for what else you are talking about I have no idea. Your posts are generally too nonsensical to understand. Give up. You've had a bit of Stenhousemuir here.
  18. Because you asked to name players from League One OR League Two. Now you are saying you want league two players only. And when you said "HE" mentioned League two, who are you referring to?
  19. No, you clearly didn't. I see what people mean when they say you keep moving the goalposts. Plus I said Scotland was equivalent to League One, not League two.
  20. The thing is most young English talent ends up in the vast youth teams of the big Premier League academies and then get loaned out. There will be plenty who go out on loan to league one and league two before returning and making their mark in the Premier League. However in answer to your question:- Fabian Delph / Nick Powell / Dele Ali / Dwight Gayle / Matt Lowton / Wayne Hennessey / Harry Maguire / Johan Berg Gudmundsson / Jonjo Shelvey / Calvert-Lewin
  21. Scottish football in general has a dirth of quality players compared to the players they had available up until the turn of the millennium. This shows in the Nationals side's struggles. Its not the worst league in the world. Its just not very good. Outside of Celtic, the other sides would struggle to get out of League One. eltic are a cut above obviously, but there impact in the Champions League compared to English teams shows that they are miles behind in general. They're probably bottom half prem with the rest of the SPL two leagues below. That's not me trying to put Scottish Premier League down. That's just being honest as I see it. If we were linked with an up-and-coming Scottish talent would I risk bringing him to Ewood? Yes, as he's as much chance of proving beneficial as an up and coming English player. However if he's made numerous SPL appearances for Hibs or Partick Thistle, it carries very little weight. Apologies if you think that's trolling but I think that's a fairly balanced opinion.
  22. Re-read what I posted then please get them back out the bin. Although I do apologise, it wasn't Israel. It was APOEL from cyprus who have done what the Old Firm haven't. What s the population of Cyprus?
  23. I've been off the site for a few days so missed all this fun. Interesting Dryhorse specifically picked final appearances rather than winning.. It's fair to say Scotland do peform ok in relation to their population. However Portugal is only twice their size and yet have been in 7 major finals in that time, winning 3 of them. Therefore Scotland are severely underperforming on final appearances against population compared to them. Heres an interesting fact I came across the other day (which I have to admit did surprise me a little). Rangers or Celtic have never won a game in the champions league knockout stages. Even Israel have managed that!
  24. I've watched him closely since his antics at Ewood and I don't think he's great. Very suspect on high balls. I certainly wouldn't swap Raya for him.
  25. Wolves won the title over a 46 game season with 2 games to spare. Celtic won it over a 38 game season with 3 games to spare.
