  1. If France had played from the first minute instead of waiting until the 80th maybe they'd have won it. Argentina GK an absolute beast when it comes to penalties, he was the difference at the end.
  2. It was a true statement at the time tbf. If it lit a fire under France then so be it 😎
  3. It's been a really disappointing and uncompetitive final. As was the Argentina/Croatia semi. Tournament definitely peaked in the quarters.
  4. France bottling it big time at the moment.
  5. According to Mowbray he doesn't really have a say in transfers for Sunderland, so I don't think it'll be his call either way. He did say he had "all the spreadsheets" here, which I take to mean he had far more involvement in recruitment. I suppose that's the difference between being manager here (which historically under Venky's means you basically are in charge of everything related to the playing squads) and just being the head coach at Sunderland.
  6. I mean, we were a penalty shoot out away from winning Euro 2020. It's the closest we've got to winning a tournament since 1966. I think Southgate needs an additional staff member or two to help with his tactical decisions, but generally speaking he's done a good job as England manager. I also wouldn't trust the FA to appoint anybody better, based on the last 20 years or so of average-to-terrible appointments. With Euro 2024 only being 18 months away this decision makes sense to me, and I think the best time to assess a change will be after that.
  7. Travis has definitely been struggling the past couple of months. Might be worth him having a spell out of the first team and knuckling down in training, trying to improve on the areas of JDT's style he's struggling with. I don't want to write him off as I think he can and has in the past brought a lot to the team, he's just not fitting in with the way we're trying to play at the moment.
  8. The level of vitriol the Norwich supporters had for the manager and team today really surprised me. I didn't realise there was such a deep set discontent there. The atmosphere was pretty toxic, with the fans turning against the team really early on and loudly booing them off at half time. It's not like they were losing heavily to a team significantly below them. It felt over the top, but if the negative feeling is that strong it's hard to see how that can be turned around short of a very, very good run of form. On the basis of today's showing it's tough to see Norwich getting the results needed to change the perception in the stands that change is needed.
  9. Under-fire Norwich boss Dean Smith said sections of the Carrow Road crowd had been "waiting" for his side to struggle after their home defeat by Championship promotion rivals Blackburn. The Canaries slid to their fourth home loss in seven games after Ben Gibson's own goal and a Tyrhys Dolan strike secured the points for Blackburn. Disgruntled fans called for Smith's dismissal during the game and the Norwich head coach told BBC Radio Norfolk: "I think a lot of them have been waiting for this period to happen, or wanting it to - I don't know. "A narrative's been set about it not being good football, despite us having the second or third highest shots in the league." Not a good sign when the manager starts having a go at the fans. Tends to end badly. I don't think the Norwich fans helped their team at all today (they were booing them really early on) but comments like that are only going to deepen the divide between the supporters and the manager/team.
  10. I think overall it's a good outcome. The players like him and enjoy playing for the national team. Tournament performances (Nations League aside) have generally been pretty good. I'd like him to bring somebody onto the staff to help him tactically during matches though, particularly when we're playing the better teams.
  11. Worth noting we were still passing it around the back at times, and it led to a couple of scary situations where we lost the ball in a dangerous area. Norwich were just not good enough to make us pay for those lapses. I think the only reason it appeared like we were doing it less was because we only had 40% possession in this match. I wouldn't be so sure that we've seen the back of it.
  12. I'd preferred to have been sitting with the Rovers fans, but it was an experience being surrounded by mostly mutinous Norwich supporters for sure. The goals aside, that backheel was the highlight of the match. Top quality. We should have capitalised from it but unfortunately the move broke down.
  13. Don't think we were very good going forward, had some dodgy moments at the back and played ourselves into trouble a few times as is standard. Norwich were rubbish though and the crowd only came alive to sing about sacking the manager or booing. Seems like the match and performance came across better on TV than it did live. Sitting in freezing conditions probably plays a part in that! Ultimately happy with a 2-0 away result regardless of how we achieved it. We'll need to continue improving performance wise to maintain our current position though.
  14. About to start heading up to Norwich, hoping at the very least we can achieve our first draw of the season. Praying we don't get hammered as I'm having to sit with the home supporters.
  15. Considering the FA's recent record I'd be worried if Southgate does go. I think he's quite limited tactically, and that's one of the reasons we almost always lose against elite opposition, but he's clearly excellent at player management and I think he gets how international management in general works. His flaws could be balanced out by more technically minded backroom staff. I mean, when you look at the record of appointments post-Hoddle it makes for pretty grim reading. Keegan - managed a year, knocked out in the Euro 2000 group stages Sven - can at best be described as having an average tenure, marred by scandals McClaren - Disaster Capello - Awful Roy - Pretty pathetic Allardyce - Managed a single match before getting himself into a scandal So yeah... not a great track record. They got lucky with Southgate.
  16. Problem is you can't really have it both ways where Mowbray made 'exceptional' signings and was a solid on-field manager, as if this was the case he wouldn't have led us on regular death spirals (for example 2 wins out of 17). Exceptional signings combined with a decent let alone good manager would be finishing top six. The fact we never did under Mowbray (the league table at Christmas doesn't count) suggests either his signings weren't particularly exceptional, or they were but the manager was a bit rubbish at the most important thing - results on the pitch. On Buckley, didn't he recently sign a 5 year deal? Would be strange if we let him go anywhere, Sunderland or otherwise.
  17. They can give up any hope of that happening.
  18. Travis' value must be going in a negative direction as well - not to mention Buckley and Dack.
  19. Been a good effort from Morocco, but they needed to score in those first 20 minutes of the second half where they were in control. Just don't quite have the quality up top to capitalise on some excellent attacking play. A good effort, much better than Croatia mustered against Argentina at least.
  20. Yeah... I was over the England result by the day after. Disappointing but never mind, maybe next time. Meanwhile I'm still holding some major resentment over the Burnley and Preston performances. I suppose it's different for everyone though. There were a couple on here who outright said in the Burnley match thread the result and performance didn't bother them at all, which is hard for me to understand, but maybe for others it'd be hard for them to understand why I was over England going out of the WC by the next day.
  21. I think JDT has just been luckier than TM in terms of his possession football getting results. Performance wise there's been no improvement. A few decent games but even during TM's possession season we had some okay performances. I imagine there will be little to choose between either manager or season in the end. For JDT to make this work long-term he needs more cash than Venky's will be able or willing to provide. With that being the case this entire project is pointless and everybody involved is wasting their time, whilst getting paid handsomely to do so (fans excepted, obviously, we're paying for the privilege).
  22. What a disappointing semi final. Messi brilliant, but Croatia out of their depth. Hopefully Morocco give France a game, another lop-sided semi final result would be a shame.
  23. Problem is Croatia are desperately boring to watch. They've done well to grind their way to the semis but they've only managed to score more than one goal in a single match in the tournament (4-1 Vs Canada). Argentina Vs Brazil would have been a much more entertaining semi. As funny as it was seeing Brazil dumped out, in reality it was to the detriment of the tournament.
  24. Lol, get used to that fellas.
  25. I'd be surprised if Southgate goes anywhere. He'll know he's got a pretty nice spot as England manager, and as far as the FA are concerned he's the perfect person for the role. Inoffensive, great for PR, never causes any bother and might even get us to a semi or a final if we can avoid the big nations most of the way through.
