They only care about the bottom line - and clearly our resources are miniscule. Every player brought in has been funded by a player leaving and the wage budget has been slashed in the process. A wage budget that was already in the bottom third of the league. The clearly have no guarantees the owners will put sufficient money in and are being asked (or are being proactive) in trying to make our money stretch as far as possible. It's obviously a massive gamble, but the alternative is Brittain, Travis et al leaving on a free in the summer and us not being able to field a team next season - regardless of what division we're in.

Playing time is one of his requirements - otherwise he might as well just stay at Sunderland.

Any of those targets from the Continent that would suit the above criteria would already be over for a medical (and those tend to leak out) so I suspect we're not going to sign anyone.

Freebies cost more in wages - especially established Championship freebies. Loans cost a loan fee then you pay their wages for a year. Yes, they're hoping to a) survive and b) unearth a few players they can sell on for a big profit so they can keep the cycle / gravy train going for as long as possible.

The ambition is to bob around in mid-table Championship obscurity for the lowest possible cost.
