You have to pay a player what he's worth regardless of age. Money paid to keep Philips at Ewood for another 3 seasons maybe, would represent an investment not a cost. If he carries on along the trajectory everyone expects then he will be worth a fortune. Every EPL club will want him. Put simply----Philips is a Special Case.

I suspect we couldn't buy a better centre-back than Philips and pay him less than £10000 a week.

I don't think he'll get a better mentor than Tomasson.
