Millwall away Saturday 12th Jan kick off 17.30
tomphil replied to arbitro's topic in Blackburn Rovers Fans Messageboard
Echo some the above we are more than capable of winning this but I think the cautious approach will be the order of the day again, hopefully we don't ship another late one or two. Millwall 1 Rovers 1 Brereton finally nets a late equalizer and runs to the Rovers end pulling up his shirt to reveal an 'Up yours BRFCS T shirt' with 'I love mogga' on the back. -
Touch of the Don Mackay era feeling to it ? If Mowbray could pull off a flash striker signing on loan with the Venky backing it certainly would feel that way, the belief creeping back in. It takes bold moves like that to kick this club really back into gear. Missing out in the play offs three times on the bounce was gutting but it gave something to play for to the death every season after some very lean seasons at least so after the last few years i'd take a stab at that right now !

In the past I've accused Evans of being a passenger i'm not sure he hides but he definitely coasts it but I tried to be fair by saying that's just the type of player he is it's not his fault. That fell down a bit when he appeared in green and always looked a different player to the one week in week out in blue and white so then I say well it's the clubs managers and the style they play and what they ask him to do that's not getting the best out of him. Then that fell down last half of last season and early this when he did turn in a string of lively performances and actually looked like a midfielder not a sitter however new contract in the bag he reverts to type pretty quickly. It is still hard to know with him as he'll have great stats because he is neat and tidy except that'll all be based around plenty touches of the ball moving it two yards either side or backwards often under no pressure. Is he asked to do that by these unadventurous gaffers or is that just his style and they leave him to it ? Either way he's another who seems a shoe in for the team at Rovers whoever is boss but he's also another who's been consistent in our water treading previously. Put someone good and a bit different next to him and it may be different but it needs doing permanently. For me though like I said I'd shake the lot up now and remould it whilst we've chance and use the two defensive mids only when needed or we've no option as for me when Dack isn't on fire or there is no Chapman, Cairney or even early Ben Marshall types in the team its been a chronic contribution to the dull slow start football we've seen at Rovers for years.

True and his methods will probably see us through a stable season and a safe finish but if there is a genuine intent to move upwards then he has to get a bit ruthless with whatever backing is available. Let's use the money if they offer it to him not an 'as you where i'm loyal to these lads' scenario that might get him sacked by next October.
-
Palmer clearly has skill but he's a show pony who has a hell of a lot to learn about the team game still and I hope he bins off signing these types now it's pretty pointless just like the lad from West Brom. Just get some raw pace in and hopefully spend a bit of money or loan in a bit of quality who's ready to play a part and fits into how Mowbray wants to play.
-
Looking at it you think why bother with these lads when you hardly use them or don't use them correctly but reading between the lines I reckon like Payne he was signed just as Dack back up for long term absence or to fit in there if he was sold from under them. Pointless signing or good planning for all eventualities that wasn't needed ?
-
Down to the boss to send them out to do a job, two young lads tell them to close down and hassle from the front for twenty mins of less surely isn't too much to ask. Agree they aren't exactly a pair of battering rams but if he can't eradicate laziness on matchday he should be ordering them in the day after for a training session in the importance of defending from the front !
-
That's something I don't get either and it seems ingrained into them but like the other week i'd like to see two banks of four with the two up top defending from the front. Surely that's a good way to get something out of Brereton and Armstrong later in games. Its taken a while for Mowbray to go that route but I hope he sticks to it now we just look more solid.
-
One of the main reasons we end up inviting so much pressure late on is when Graham goes off and there is no similar replacement so we end up with Dack up front. This is all down to the manager and it's hard to fathom just what he's doing with BB but it ends up with him getting flack which mostly isn't his fault. Poor handling of it really to be honest as in his seeming eagerness to protect him he is in fact opening him up to stick but if Brereton went up front and put a shift in he might just might not get so much flak !
-
If he gets another contract there'll be questions I know he's had a bad injury and I wish him well but he was pretty useless before that, get fit then get rid I bet there's a good wage there can be used for someone else.
-
With it being cheap and not too far away by their standards I think Newcastle might sell out or come close they might see it as a welcome distraction from the league and the cup is the only thing that'll ever resemble an outside chance of them winning something. A lot will also depend on the draw otherwise at match price i'd have expected 4 or 5 thousand, never can tell with the Geordies though. Telly or no telly we've got to be a bit disappointed if there is less than 10/11 thousand home fans on.
-
No idea but they are both better than Brereton.....allegedly !
-
So the money is getting washed in the Championship these days instead of the Prem ... ?

I'll be honest although the sound of a 20 million war chest might be nice i'd be uneasy how it would be spent if there was a rush just to try and go up this season or something. No more scatter gun approaches wanted here try and sign specific targets for specific jobs not this buffing out the squad malarkey anymore. Rather than call it slow build i'd prefer it to be a strategic upgrade over the next few windows, and if any quality is sold it must be replaced by quality not quantity as that's were we have frequently fallen down.
-
We've heard all this before i'm not doubting any sources but i'm sure some connected with Rovers put this kind of stuff about as a PR exercise or something 50 million war chest - Nixon 20 million for Lambert - Various Rhodes money for Lambert - Some close to the club at the time 20 million plus Rhodes money - Lamberts people in private 20 million summer budget a few years ago - Some corporate guy spouting it about in the lounges and overheard by one or two who post on here. Non of it ever comes to pass or ever will and giving this one the benefit of the doubt I might go along with the owners have said they'll allocate 20 million budgets for now, that's 20 million total operating budget which includes the clubs own income which they make the shortfall up annually as they have been doing. Or maybe transfer income, they've never put huge lumps in to sign players whilst they've been here because everything goes to cover loses mostly created by them and their pals. Overall in the Venky era i'd wager transfer income more or less matches transfer outgoings, if they did sell Dack and re-invest into player purchases to try and kick us on then it would be a refreshing change. Somehow though I think the Rovers black hole would be waiting to swallow that lot less those percentages of course.
-
Not that i'm advocating it but spending 7 million on him would've been a better punt than the 7 million he has spent.
-
Doesn't the path of Gallaghers agent lead to Rovers ? Probably why its always been on the radar as if his deal runs out in summer he's a good chance of getting a nice fat one here if it is the case. Might be nice if he came on loan looking to earn that deal we could see a real player for a few months and hopefully reap the benefits.
-
Gresko has to be one of the most erratic players I've ever seen at Rovers one week he was racing down the pitch from left back and scoring the next he was marking a corner at the near post and turning his back on the ball !!! Thought he was potentially really decent when he was on loan but he somewhat fell off the cliff once he'd signed permanently, think his twin brother pitched up instead.
-
Send him to Fleetwood instead of Travis, by the looks of the lad he needs 6 months in League 1 learning the ropes instead of being mollycoddled here it usually takes a player a season or two to find their comfort zone at a club but he appears to have slotted straight in.
-
Agree and I think some are a bit harsh on Smallwood but the midfield has needed shaking up for years all this two defensive mids started with Bowyer having to accommodate Lowe and Evans and it's just carried on and on. Smallwood was a breath of fresh air after Lowe but has struggled this season at times and the emergence of Travis and the impact of Reed have offered Mowbray the perfect opportunity to remould the team now and change the midfield into something a bit more dynamic or a permanent basis, is he bold enough to take it though ?
-
Not bad at all but I think that would give Mowbray kittens it's not how he's set up his pecking order of favourites.
-
Ha ha yes I forgot that pearl of wisdom, surely the guy in question has now moved clubs for millions ?
-
I'd go ten quid but i'm looking for some middle ground because they'll baulk at the prospect of missing out on 25 quid plus from at least 5 thousand Geordies. To be honest i'd probably leave the Riverside closed for this if they aren't doing real cheap tickets depending on which TV mob cover it if they do and where the cameras will be.
