v Southampton (a) - 16/12/23

I didn't see the first and fourth that way. Will have to watch the replays but I am sure the first was the fault of whoever should have been covering the front post. The ball reached the player in front of Wahlstedt at knee height. -
Players usually return to the home club for treatment and rehab if they pick up a bad injury on loan.

Not Callum's best day. We had a gilt chance to take the lead after Bazoulis spilled Szmodic's free kick and sadly for all concerned it was Brittain onto it on the 6 yard box with the keeper rapidly closing him down. He didn't see Sigurdsson free as a bird inside him and onside so poked it unconvincingly at the keeper. The rest was unneccessary yellow, idiot yellow... One weird positive, Harry Leonard looking good at right back late on. Sadly another Moran off day and Szmodics running into cul-de-sacs. If we had just 5 injuries instead of 8, Andy Moran wouldn't have started and it is worrying that Markanday isn't convincing enough to get a chance in current circumstances even off the bench. And after defending 8 corners well, how does the 9th reach a Southampton player stood in front of Leo in the 6 yard box at knee height on the stroke of half time?? Generally Leo had a good game. Southampton were ruthless as the clock ticked to 100 - i was expecting 3 or 4 minutes added on after only one at the end of the first half. Which brings us to the ref. Not Sheffield Wednesday bad but VAR would have given Southampton the first half penalty for the shirt pull. The benefit given Southampton in the second half was pathetic. -

Can Griezman sign himself for Rovers? -
Leopold Wahlstedt. About Damn Time.

Leo was excellent on Tuesday and nearly saved their goal despite being ridiculously exposed to an opponent free well inside our box. -
Hopefully Newcastle or Man U come 5th and fail to qualify as a result of their own ineptness although Newcastle were robbed in Paris.

Selection, where injuries still permit a choice, more than most weeks will depend on what JDT sees in training- too many mistakes and iffy performances on Tuesday night. Play like Tuesday and Southampton will punish us so this will be all about making best use of the ball when we have it which won't be that often. Southampton have added a bit of steel and direction to the pass pass pass of Russell Martin but here's hoping JDT has sussed him and his players again. Like Leeds, their defence can be got at if we ever get the opportunity. Unlike against Leeds, we had better take those opportunities. -

JDT is doing a sensationally good job at Rovers. Stoke unlikely to have much headroom under FFP. If a Manager go round starts in the PL I would be worried. Eg if Palace come calling. -

If we have a 24 year old Dack, that's not bad.. I thought Ennis was mobile, showed some good touches (and one very bad chest trap which I hope was a misdirected chest pass) and was a threat. Sadly against the same players, Harry Leonard was nothing like as effective. -

Too many bad touches all over the park robbed Roversof any fluency. By the law of averages something was going to stick and it was a slick move from Adam Wharton's penetrating pass and brilliant take from the flick by Sigurdsson that turned the game out way. Tronstad and Leo both immense. Will have to play much better at Southampton. -

Only a matter of time. Post-match tunnel bust ups between owners, back room staff and players of opposing sides are pretty common in Turkey. -
Wharton can and does tackle and despite his languid style is seriously quick in short bursts to cut out problems. That said I shamed for him lolloping back in the oft repeated clips as the Wednesday player tore into our box while it went all American Football on Hill. Completely agree he should shoot more often when forward- also goes for Tronstad too.

Anyone thinking this will be easy are in for a nasty shock- hopefully not as nasty as Bristol City's last visit to Ewood but this lot can play a bit. -
JdT approach is to keep players in the team if playing well. TK had been injured and was kept out when recovered. Hoping the same approach is used when Pears is back.

Yes and it works for them extremely well. Martinez to rb back across 6 yard line to CB dropped back to lb position and further left to Digne near the touch line and first time up the line to Watkins or McGinn. If opponents push wide right to block that move, Martinez pings it to the inevitably unmarked Villa player on half way on the right. -
might help getting a load of injured players back including Whitehall and Cirino and other youngsters cruelly cut down by bodies giving way.

A must win if we are not to go into January with the play offs a distant prospect. Fortunately Bristol City is not a happy camp with ructions over the new manager. Got to watch for two very good wingers. -
8n a way the Arsenal win was as impressive as the City win. Villa battered City but Arsenal took control of the second half. Yet ended with only 3 second half chances - incredible organisation by Emery's team.

Played far too few progressive balls when we got into dangerous areas. Prime case was failing to make anything when we were 3 on 3 first half and a couple of unfortunate rebounds later James put them 1 up. -
Bell handled Saka very well and my recollection is none of the 4 goals came through his part of the pitch.

I use Firefox browser to watch Rovers TV- works when Chrome and Oasis don't -
LT reporting contract is totally different from Ash Phillips' and it is all good news.
