Having thought about this a while today I think this might have been planned. They will have known that the announcement about the women's team would cause tremendous backlash. All clubs have wage bills that totally dwarf ticket money, the properly run ones promote reinvestment and that is how they cut the losses, by selling players continuously at a profit.
