nicko Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Speaking of real questions any more interest in our saviour Jason Roberts? That goal can't have done any damage. Also any more on Koumas or is that still waiting for Brucey to get an answer from Brum on Kapo? 1...I thought the manager's comments about him being 'good when he comes off the bench' were a bit of a dagger to the heart for Roberts. He is obviously not seen as a starter even if he probably should be right now. The goal will at least have kept interest in him high, but at £4 million it will still put most clubs off. 2...Exactly.

Wolverine Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Sparky would definately take Bentley, and that is the only scenario I could envision interesting Dave enough into moving. Samba, Nelsen, Benni and Santa Cruz are other possibilities... The future sure don't look good for us at the moment. Talk of who would replace Mark if he left is pretty pointless too, as the lack of money is probably a huge sticking point. Not optimistic about our long term future...
Plastic Head Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Out of £5.3m wagered on Betfair £4.6m went on Redknapp. So no confidence in anyone yet.
PLZ Blue Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I am hoping Sparky is using the Newcastle interest as leverage to get support out of the board. If he leaves we are scr3wed.
Exiled in Toronto Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I am hoping Sparky is using the Newcastle interest as leverage to get support out of the board. If he is then he is wasting his time. Their only vision for the future is to sell out - any promises they might make would be worthless.
1864roverite Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 The idiotic Alan Oliver (not you Nicko) has again been back on, he appears to be saying that Shearer will take the job if offered and that Mort spoke to him by telephone. he di however say he actually had no idea just who would become manager !! (then) he goes and prints a headline SHEARER FOR TOON !!!
nicko Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 It's just a thought, but if anyone was serious about buying the club - and could put the right bid together - this would be almost the ideal time to get the finger out and do it.
Mozzer Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 other then a guy who supports blackburn-and wouldnt see blackburn as making a quick buck-who else would invest in blackburn???
Taggart Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Nicko - you mentioned that you had a name in the frame for NUFC bu were waiting on a call to confirm, has this been disclosed yet ? When would you expect to hear about Hughes and NUFC and what the targets are, surely people must be digging all over the press and agents for info - how long does it usually take before you hear something concrete ?

philipl Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 It appears John Williams spoke to at least some media an hour ago. Rovers are chasing a Champions League place. Again, looking at it from a Newcastle perspective, there is very little interest in Hughes taking over. One good thing about them having a big fanbase is they seem to be able to influence the media in terms of papers chasing Geordie copy sales. So Keegan and/or Shearer on the billboard = easy sales Hughes on the billboard = nothing doing
nicko Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 other then a guy who supports blackburn-and wouldnt see blackburn as making a quick buck-who else would invest in blackburn??? There have been a couple of others talking but falling short. But, for me, now would be a very good time for someone to come back in strong and serious.
LeftWinger Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 There have been a couple of others talking but falling short. But, for me, now would be a very good time for someone to come back in strong and serious. You've got a few quid haven't you Nicko?
nicko Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Nicko - you mentioned that you had a name in the frame for NUFC bu were waiting on a call to confirm, has this been disclosed yet ? When would you expect to hear about Hughes and NUFC and what the targets are, surely people must be digging all over the press and agents for info - how long does it usually take before you hear something concrete ? I've not had the call...and neither has the manager's club. I don't want to mention his name as I honestly don't think Mike Ashley knows what to do next. I said on Saturday that I felt that the whole Shearer question has to be addressed one way or another. If he was told he had no chance then all of these rumours about him being interested could just be his way of whipping up some support for himself. It's a mess.
krislu Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 It appears John Williams spoke to at least some media an hour ago. Rovers are chasing a Champions League place. “We are chasing a Champions League place so why would he want to leave?” Because it will never be anything more than a chase, and Hughes knows it. At the end of the day you have to give the manger some financial backing otherwise you have no right to be in the runnings for anything...
nicko Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 You've got a few quid haven't you Nicko? A lot less after the weekend...don't tell mrs nicko though!
LeftWinger Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 A lot less after the weekend...don't tell mrs nicko though! Lets just hope she doesnt read this site
USABlue Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Just read this on skysports http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_3045024,00.html Dont know if its been posted or is the right place to post, but im a bit more confident after reading this. This is just an about face, a different spin on the same words. About the same about face as Nicko has had. If I recall Saturday morning Nicko was saying it is NOT Mark Hughes in the frame now it seems he says it is. I have had a thought regarding some mention of the board and trustees stance on this. Mr Williams, as much as I have respect for him, will still be in a job, so no skin off his nose. We have known, and Williams eluded to the fact even shortly after Sparky was appointed, that we will lose Hughes to a big job. No doubt then that Rovers upper echelon already have a viable short list of replacements. Now here is the kicker, my feelings are the trustees are totally drooling over the possibility of Hughes going. We will get a good compo package and throw in to the mix that Sparky will likely take the following with him, Bentley, Samba and Rocky maybe even Brad. Now look at what we paid for those players and what we could demand in todays market, big money. I think there will be little or no resistance from our upper echelon when the Geordies come calling
philipl Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I think the current situation is far from what the Board and Trustees wanted at an educated guess. You forget the size of the transaction costs when players and management teams move never mind the risks of hiring duds as replacements. My hunch is Hughes is directing his coyness at least as much at Jersey as he is at Tyneside. It seems that 'Arry is getting Jermaine Defoe as a staying on present. Of course, Sparky has only just got a massive rise for himself and his management team which probably had him on more than 'Arry was before Saturday's turn of events so if Sparky is negotiating himself a staying on present in the form of a player or two, all power to his elbow. Has John Williams spoken explicitly about Champions League ambition before? I know he has talked about Europe.
modes98 Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Because it will never be anything more than a chase, and Hughes knows it. At the end of the day you have to give the manger some financial backing otherwise you have no right to be in the runnings for anything... Should we somehow make it in then the board would have to release funds as they would be coming in from the campaign and also increased prem prize money. If Hughes has faith in the club he has built then he should stay and try to push us closer. If he got us to 4th or 5th then he would be a heavy contender for the manyoo job. If he goes to newcastle and gets them to 10th and then 8th or even just into the uefa up it's hardly going to set the glazers hearts fluttering.
krislu Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 For me, the only reason for not joining Newcastle is that Hughes would have to start from scratch. Him getting the chance to speak with Newcastle might not be a bad thing if their owner presents some really tough/unrealastic targets for where he wants the team to be. Not a 100% confident Hughes will take the risk of starting all over again.
nicko Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 This is just an about face, a different spin on the same words. About the same about face as Nicko has had. If I recall Saturday morning Nicko was saying it is NOT Mark Hughes in the frame now it seems he says it is. There's been enough confusion already...let's get this one straight. Sparky was NOT in the frame on Saturday. I'm not sure he is now. What has changed is that Mark Hughes went from distancing himself on Friday when he thought Redknapp was getting it to the refusal to rule it out on Sunday.

From the quotes I've heard - I don't think he particularly changed his view on the Newcastle position - just the questions put to him became more direct.
