RevidgeBlue Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Another one. Plus a left winger, a left back and a right back I'd agree on the need for a top quality midfielder, that should be where most of the funds are spent imo. Whilsat you should never say never to the possibility of improving your side I don't think we really need anyone else up front unless someone leaves. The priority should be to get Benni and Derbs playing to their best again. If Peter and Treacy aren't going to make it, I'd agree we need someone to keep MGP on his toes. Possibly we'll have to replace Bentley which would hopefully be a major acquisition in itself. Don't see full backs as a priority, Warnock has been out standing and Olsson should provide good long term competition and I still like Emerton at r/b with Reid or Ooijer able to cover in an emergency. Maybe a younger centre half with doubts over Nelsen's fitness?
Hughesy Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Whats up Nicko? Realistically we cant sign 2 midfielders, left back, right back and a striker. So what would be the priority for you? Personally I feel left back is covered by warnock and then a good prospect in Olsson as cover.
RevidgeBlue Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Trouble at mill down Manchester City way... Oh dear, what a shame, never mind. Why, what's up?
Sparky Marky Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 We need: Left winger... right back..... central mid.... that's it
nicko Posted April 28, 2008 Author Posted April 28, 2008 Oh dear, what a shame, never mind. Why, what's up? I think Eriksson is going. More a question of Sven and not if...
LeftWinger Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Sven is 3/1 favourite to be next to go on betfair but THIS SEASON. Apparantly that counts as the last matches of the season.
nicko Posted April 28, 2008 Author Posted April 28, 2008 Sven is 3/1 favourite to be next to go on betfair but THIS SEASON. I'll check when that counts until. The last game...time-scale is the only issue.
they_think_its_all_rover Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Wouldn't have been so annoying if it was just a post or 2, or if anyone else actually got involved in the conversation. Yeah, you're right... there was only 3 or 4 replies about Warnock. Nicko being one of them, who's thread this is. As for summer signings I'd say we have enough players now that are good enough as "back up" ...players who are sometimes first team regulars. I'd like to see another striker come in, but I see where Hughes is coming from... I'd divide our budget equally by 3 then blow it all on; a quality CB, RB & CM. I think that would solve most problems. We'd then be able to rotate Reid, Dunn & Tugay... & also rotate Pedersen with Dunn & Bentley (Emerton going to RM when this happens). Emerton becoming cover for RB, RM & CM at a push if things become bad.
den Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 So, a couple of days ago they are agreeing a £20m fee for Jo, now they're sacking their manager? Nothing like a plan coming together - and this is noth......!
Martin Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 I think Eriksson is going. More a question of Sven and not if... That's just silly. Granted he's had money and they have ran out of steam lately, but they have played some good stuff this season, especially early on. What does the owner expect??
nicko Posted April 28, 2008 Author Posted April 28, 2008 I think you will find the signings are being made over Sven's head... It's chaos.
RibbleValleyRover Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 I can't see us buying another striker unless one of our current one leaves. It will be hard to keep 5 strikers happy next season if we don't get Europe, let alone having 6. The central midfield should be our main focus IMO. We need a real attacking midfielder, one that can support the forwards with forward runs. Something which is really needed to play an effective 4-4-2. I can't see any real problems with the defense, we have 4 decent centre backs in Nelsen, Samba, Ooijer and Zurab. Warnock and Emerton i am happy with as the left and right backs. It might be nice to give olsson some more chances next season and give some competition to Warnock. I can see us maybe bringing in a young right back with potential to compete with Emerton.
MI ROVER Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Hope they don't come knocking on our door for Hughes like last year !! seem to recall the Manchester Evening News revealing headlines that hughes was in the frame back then. What do you reckon nicko
colin Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Re Manchester City manchester Evening News That Shinawatra's a bit of a pillock

What do you reckon nicko If he has any sense he would stay put. I think they will go for a global name when the time comes anyway...

What do you reckon nicko I would imagine Hughes would be too smart to make that move. If Frank Sinatra is buying players himself - it's unlikely any manager worth his salt would take the job.

American Rover12 Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Isn't this the same Man City owner who not too long ago was raving about Sven as coach and was placing confidence in him to build a great team. There was a quote like the players they brought in "really did hurt my wallet" but with Sven then he was confident they could build and go up. Seems a tad odd now Sven is on his way out.
bluebruce Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 well since Rovers are said to be willing to give Gamst between £45k and £50k a week to extend his contract, I can only pray to God that that is a heinous lie. That would be a shocking decision. If they want to keep him despite everyone else's opinion on him, that's fine...but on a substantial pay rise? I really bloody hope not. I hope Benni didn't get a pay rise either.

I hope Benni didn't get a pay rise either. the thing with your top players is you have to pay them more than when you signed them. Even if only on the back of 1 or 2 seasons worth of performing. Benni may not have fired in as many this season but his goal record over the 2 seasons is still mighty impressive. It'll be interesting to see if Santa gets the same stick after his second season syndrome kicks in.
jannerman Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Bloody hell, footballs getting more and more like work by the week.... We got "taken over" at work a couple of years ago and apart from a few casualties of personality the staff remained relatively the same, a few big boys have moved on since and sold a bunch of overpriced shares beforehand.... Anyway, there has been practically a non-stop period of instability and general feelings of dread throughout the place ever since - kind of like the majority of football clubs that have been bought out over the past year or so seem to be unable to prevent the infighting and negative press we've seen this past weekend.... Wonder if this is the difference between running a business and running a football club? Lets hope any potential takeover doesn't mean the same for Rovers....
thenodrog Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Other than a central midfielder - what else theno? I'd say we need a right-back, creative midfielder and a quick striker and then I'm happy. Another one. Plus a left winger, a left back and a right back We need: Left winger... right back..... central mid.... that's it Lots of thenodrog impersonators on here it appears Hughesy! Still I'd like those posters above to respect the policy at Ewood which appears to be "one in one out" and suggest who they'd have for the exit door to make room for their new men. The task suddenly becomes more difficult. For me a damned good replacement (and we may already have him) in centre mid will mean Tugay departing. Shame of course but thats football. Also it's got to be time Berner was moving on.
