Tom 1 Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 As a Villa fan, Curtis Davies is a great player and imo should be starting for us. If he was available for a cheap price he'd be a great buy for any number of sides. I've watched him and Cahill plenty and I still believe Curtis is better than Gary Cahill and everyone raves about him. Nicko is right on Coker and Sidwell, they're both dog ###### and they both have wages which they don't deserve. I am hoping a Wolves or some such side will take them off our hands. Coker causes trouble wherever he goes also.

nicko Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Sidwell is exactly the kind of player we should be looking at. With a chance to rebuild his career, he could be just the player our midfield needs. I also think we should snap Darren Ambrose while we can. Crystal Palace are broke and they owe us some money, anyway. He'd make a versatile addition to the squad, especially if Peds is leaving. Sidwell had a good season or two at Reading, chose to take the Chelsea cash and never play, moved to Villa and vanished. What's good about that? Ambrose? Are you sure? When did he make an impact at Premier League level? No point in Rovers bringing in tired old flops.
benhben Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 I think Sidwell would be a pretty good signing, but only if the transfer fee and wagers are reasonably low. Also Reo-Coker used to be a good player, hence was made villa captain
Commondore Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Ambrose is a decent shout, if nothing else for the chance to annoy Newcastle with yet another of their ex-players making it elsewhere . He seems to be able to play in all the offensive midfield positions we are currently employing, wouldn't cost much given the state Palace are in and is coming off a great season.

I am a big believer that if a player has show the quality and is young enough you can bring that back. Sidwell and Coker both have quality of that there is little doubt. It is a case of finding the hunger. However this is all a bit academic because they will be out of our wage range.
bennyboyt11 Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Yeah, you're right. No need to be childish, he's rubbish mate.
OJRovers Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 From what BS has said we are not going to send money on a central midfielder so talking about Sidwell/Reo Coker is academic really. The way I see it is that we are looking at: - 1 goalscorer (£3m-£4m) - 1 backup striker (£2m-ish) - 1 winger (Ledley?) - 1 or 2 youngsters (ideally French!) This is unless we have to sell anyone.
AJW Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/may/12/martin-oneill-aston-villa Link for those who wanted it ... you could say that all 6 have had good seasons in PL but have struggled after the move , i can't see us going for any of them except possibly shorey if BS is looking for cover at LB , unless we sell someone first i.e Samba goes and Curtis Davies could become an option, Reo-coker and Sidwell imo would improve our midfield , but due to finances and the number of midfielders we already have, dont think it will happen and Young and Beye are ok at r/b , but are they better than the 4 we have already?
modes98 Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Sidwell had a good season or two at Reading, chose to take the Chelsea cash and never play, moved to Villa and vanished. What's good about that? It is far better that a player goes to a club and doesn't get in the team for whatever reason than plays rubbish all the time and we try and sign them (See Portsmouth players). At least there may be some talent in there to save. If you know anything about the psychology of football fans you will know that every player is a reject of some club somewhere. There are very few players that stay at a single club from year dot through to retirement. Being a reject doesn't automatically make them not worth following up. Sidwell is worth a look especially if Villa are getting rid cheap, there is a reason Chelsea paid that much for him.

Thats how I see it too! I think Sam will stick with Dunn, Grella, NZonzi & Liganzi as his 4 centre midfielders....with possibly Andrews if no offers come in too!
Silencio Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Jo or Caciedo from City anyone?! Caceido has potential but I think Jo is a waster. He has been partying it up in Turkey, I believe...
rog of the rovers Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Whittingham from Cardiff would be a decent signing if they dont come up. Terrific goals record a tailor made replacement for MGP should he leave. A left footer who can play through the middle with good delivery and threat from set pieces. 17 England U-21 caps Only problem is he played 7 games for Burnley on loan in 2005.
nicko Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Sidwell is worth a look especially if Villa are getting rid cheap, there is a reason Chelsea paid that much for him. Chelsea got him on a free.

ALways thought he looked one-paced when he was younger, but he can cross a ball well...
Sandiway Blue Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Jo or Caciedo from City anyone?! Well past April 1st....
Hughesy Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Well past April 1st.... Didnt we try getting Caciedo on loan previously? He's a big powerful young lad - not sure how he has done this season if he's been out on loan? Whittingham at Cardiff is nothing special - and cant see why we would go for him when Ledley is going for Free/ Tribunal price.

Hasn't Whittingham just scored 20-odd goals for a team on the cusp of a Wembley play-off final? Certainly worth a look IMO - deffo a better pedigree than Mr Andrews!
Hughesy Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Hasn't Whittingham just scored 20-odd goals for a team on the cusp of a Wembley play-off final? 2 words - Jason Roberts! He managed the same....MASSIVE step up to this level Isnt he the club penalty taker too? So they may dilute his stats abit?!
bellamy11 Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 2 words - Jason Roberts! He managed the same....MASSIVE step up to this level Isnt he the club penalty taker too? So they may dilute his stats abit?! Doesn't Whittingham play in midfield though? Very impressive goals tally for somebody in that position. I'd imagine a not-insignificant amount of those goals come from free kicks and penalties (his free kick against Leicester at the weekend was lovely). Would be useful if MGP ends up leaving. Could possibly be a bit of a Craig Hignett-style player? Probably not Prem class but useful coming off the bench if we need to create something. I'm not totally sold on him but we might pick him up on the cheap if Cardiff don't come up - they're precariously balanced at the moment waiting for this takeover to happen and have the most to lose of any of the playoff teams by failing.
patrickvalery Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 ALways thought he looked one-paced.... As rog of the rovers said, an ideal replacement for MGP then.
RoyRover Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Jo or Caciedo from City anyone?! I've always liked the look of Caciedo. Big, fast, powerful and could get a goal or two. I doubt he's prolific, but he could be a long term replacement for Jason Roberts, only better.
Backroom Tom Posted May 12, 2010 Backroom Posted May 12, 2010 Out of interest would the guy from Cardiff be mentioned had he not scored in a televised game at weekend or have we been linked before? I expect people will be recommending any relative unknown who scores in the world cup in summer.
