laughatthedingles Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Just thought I'd reopen the debate on him. I was firmly in the 'play him with a partner up front and he'll score camp'. Got 9 in 12 for Dnipro so far.

MarkBRFC Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Always saw him as a poacher, although not a particularly good one. To be fair though i guess we never did play to his strengths, i don't miss him one bit put it that way.
Amo Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Bought under false pretences. Not the type of striker who can carry a mediocre team. Even when he did get among the goals he was dropped and outcast by Kean. I still reckon he could have made it, albeit at a different time.
Gav Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Very poor player, big transfer fee, uninterested, glad we got rid.

den Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Give him the service and he'll score goals some said. Good strikers make things happen for themselves - look at Yakubu to see that.
Pitty Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Why are people still talking about this guy, he was crap when he was here so we got rid, end of.
LeChuck Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Just thought I'd reopen the debate on him. I was firmly in the 'play him with a partner up front and he'll score camp'. How many other players exist in the Premier League like that? Players either have to be able to play on their own, or they have to be able to play a wide role. Those that can't do either will end up playing elsewhere. Kalinic, unfortunately, fell into the latter.
Backroom DE. Posted March 7, 2012 Backroom Posted March 7, 2012 Thought Kalinic had potential originally but he disappointed me a couple of times - particularly getting sent off stupidly having scored two against WBA and finally looking like he might have arrived. Think he's the type of striker who thrives on service and won't make things for himself - the type of player unlikely to succeed at a club outside the top 6 in the premier league. His goals tally in his current league is irrelevant.
Backroom Tom Posted March 7, 2012 Backroom Posted March 7, 2012 Very poor player, big transfer fee, uninterested, glad we got rid. This sums up my feelings really
Amo Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Good strikers make things happen for themselves - look at Yakubu to see that. Ruud Van Nistelrooy & Filippo Inzaghi would like a word.
speeeeeeedie Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Ruud Van Nistelrooy & Filippo Inzaghi would like a word. So would Gerd Muller and Ian Rush. Decent player, wrong league. Wouldn't have helped our plight if he was still here.
LeChuck Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 So would Gerd Muller and Ian Rush. It's quite telling that the four payers mentioned are from a different era. I agree with your second sentence though. He'll be a success in a league where he can be afforded a strike partner.
RoyRover Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Always thought he could have been a good goal scorer if he had had a regular partner.
Baz Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Always thought he could score goals in a crap league.... In the Prem though, he was awful.
den Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Ruud Van Nistelrooy & Filippo Inzaghi would like a word. Both about five divisions higher than Niko in quality.
Andy Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 He clearly had a decent level of finishing, but struggling as a sole striker. In a team with proper service, regardless of quality of opposition, he'll get goals.

He'll be a success in a league where he can be afforded a strike partner. I agree. I couldn't think of any "modern" players. Maybe Owen, and he's now past it. Hernandez for Man U may fit the bill. Den, I think the main point is that he would never be as good as the top line finishers, but that he can play given the right circumstances. I see your not impressed with Vukevic. Did you not rate Patrik Andersson either? Couldn't get a game at Ewood but played for Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
Amo Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Both about five divisions higher than Niko in quality. That wasn't your point.
