We don't offer competitive salaries when they go pro.

Although not academy, look at Dolan. A pro deal when he signed, an improved deal 6 months later and then nothing for 4 years.

Gregg Broughton tried repeatably to get Dolan to sign a new contract but Dolan didn't. He has changed agents now and he hasn't wanted to signed a new contract but Eustace and Rovers wanted to keep him.

I think here all the focus is getting them into the first team whilst they are still on youth wages.

Then just hoping the odd one is worth big wonga before they have to be paid a big enough wage to keep them here.

based on what?

I don't think that's fair.

Broughton tried to get Phillips tied down and his agent bent us over a barrel. They gave minutes to him AND Finneran before they were ready to convince them that there was a pathway to playing first team football here.

I doubt they are offering wages that reflect the potential though and given they are academy products the starting point won't be very high to begin with.

Plus you are talking about having DoF whose job it was to do the contracts, we didn't have one before and haven't had one since.

Im sure we have tried to get Dolan to sign a new deal but it doesnt mean we were offering a market rate wage.

Exactly.

Numerous players have spoke about the negotiating process here.

He is 16 years old, and last season (whilst still at school) was fairly regular for our U18s and also  played for our U21s as well as being called up for Italy U17s, (although I do not think he has actually played at that level yet)

For comparison, Harvey Higgins (who is also 16 and was still at school last season) played slightly less games at both U18 & U21 level, and is playing at England U16 level

So purely looking at the stats, their development/potential/hype, are similar, albeit in different positions. wth us "getting lucky" with Higgins signing a scholarship deal, probably at least in part because he is a local lad who has been with us since U7s level, whilst we snapped Eze up from Accrington less than 7 months ago

For a further comparison, both Igor Tyjon & Rory Finneran, featured more at all levels in the previous season (when they were both the same age as Higgins & Eze are now *)

* obviously not perfect comparisons, as they play in different positions and 2 separate years

Thanks KentExile. Tyrone and Higgins have been all the talk and I remember how well Phillips was spoken of coming through as was Wharton. I knew of Eze but just hadn't picked up on any particular hype

We have director of Football in Gestede to be honest who deals with the Recruitment and transfers and Adam Owen deal with the other side of the DoF as Gestede has said

Phillips wanted out when GB and JDT came in and somehow they convince him to stay and sign a new contract but he and his agent was a release clause based on the number of minutes played. Should we have played him more to get an higher transfer fee?

Mahonney, Bennett to name 2, Lenihen off the record.

Gives a clear idea of how the approach things whilst Pasha has been in charge.

Rudy Gestede by the way started on work experience then was given the title of Head of Depts but now i presume he's called Sporting Director but he hasn't got the DoF title.

The guy is in charge of catering and everything else judging by his No Tippy Tappy podcast so i'm not sure what use he'll be negotiating contracts.

Gestede is the head of football operations as he was when appointed 12 months ago. Adam Owen is in charge technical development at Rovers

Unless you are in room when contracts are negotiating when any of us really know

No we don't all we have to go on is what players say and the evidence before our eyes of players not re-signing.

I'd say it doesn't paint a great picture.

Also Gestedes title is a farce he's head of nothing he is just carrying out instructions given to him from above and how many Heads of Football operations have the catering staff reporting to them ? 🤣
