Only in certian quarters. If they were to release a record of themselves farting into the microphone it would still go platinum and Kerrang! would still have them as "The most important band in the world today" or typical garbage like that. as it happens I've been deriding them (and the entire genre) from the off.

Currently in the CD player are:

Primal Scream - Evil Heat

Bowie - Heathen

Ian Dury - 10 more turnips from the tip

Iggy Pop - Lust for life

Coldplay - A rush of blood

Dexy's - searching for the young soul rebels

I've got room for one more - any suggestions?

That is true.

I suppose it is the obverse of the overly pompous NME declaring that some bland Strokes-like punk band are the greatest thing since the Beatles. ???

Utter rubbish.

Try the new Clash compilation. Quality.

As for JJ72 liked the first album but never got round to buying the follow up. Now the bassist has left  :(

Its true Damo.

Hilary Woods left the band "to pursue other interests in her life". Wish I was one of those interests  :p

Don't think they have replaced her yet, but the band are carrying on.

Zwan is good - doesn't quite live up to the greatness of the Pumpkins though.

Listening to the new Placebo (Good) Linkin Park (ok)

And then my usual mixture of Smashing Pumpkins, GNR and System of a Down.

Hilary is stunning, but a pretty average bass player - if I remember correctly, she'd never picked one up before Mark asked her to join the band. There was never any danger of them splitting up over it. Still bloody annoying.

Try any of the Idlewild albums. Or JJ72.

~~!

JJ72 are fantastic.

Got the first JJ72 cd - pretty damned good it is too. Is the second as good?

Haven't heard Idlewild - any reference points to help me decide?

I like this thread - could save me a few quid in crap cd's.

Thanks, Simon; however, to my lasting and permanent regret, I got the best of the Clash on vinyl (that's long-playing gramophones to you whippersnappers) usually within a week of it coming out - was never totally sure of the Clash myself though the occasional one was a peach.

If you're into that kind of stuff, try any of the following five as they are unsung but absolute classics of that period:

Siouxsie & The Banshees - The Scream

The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette

Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material

Adverts - Crossing the Red Sea With The Adverts

Penetration - Moving Targets

As for me, two opposing views on the second JJ72 - will wait for a third, and deciding opinion.

Sadly Drummer Boy it seems we might be around the same age.

Agree with all the above, but you missed out

Rattus Norvegicus

No More Heroes

Black And White

The Raven

etc etc

Stranglers ruled!

Even as I was putting the adverts in, I thought to myself "there's something missing here" - and you hit the nail on the head - Rattus Norvegicus just (and only just) edges out Black and White. Is there a better starting lyric to an album than that of Rattus?

My only (feeble) excuse is that I was offering less widely recognised classics and I think the Stranglers, along with the Pistols (who made the best rock'n'roll album of all time IMO), were pretty widely recognised as having produced a couple of albums of permanent class.

Just like Rovers - form is temporary, class is permanent.

Apart from all that, we are the age our dads probably were when we were buying this stuff - could you imagine them comparing recent releases by new bands?? Are we sadly trying to cling on to what we once were or should we sink into middle age music or stand proud and keep our minds open? I know which I prefer!

JJ72's new album is good - but not as good as the original. There's a bit more variety, and no unarguably garbage songs like Bumble Bee on this one, but there's less standout tracks. Formuale, Serpent Sky, City (sh!tty dance intro aside) and 7th Wave are all great.

As for Idlewild, like I said, all three albums are very good. Some good songs to download as a taster, try:

You've Lost Your Way

You're So Fragile

A Modern Way Of Letting Go

When I Argue I See Shapes

In Remote Part/Scottish Fiction

Live In A Hiding Place

Wahay,

Got the lot of them.

"Crossing The Red Sea" on red vinyl too.

Hopefully worth a few bob by now.

Not forgetting "Another Music From A Different Kitchen"

Don't do what a mate of mine did Colin.

When he was moving house he threw a load of his old records out. Some of them were worth a fortune (e.g. original Spiral Scratch ep)!

Needless to say he is now gutted.

I can't believe 'Scooter' haven't had a mention on here yet.

Lyrics ? Dark side of the moon ?  Sgt Peppers ?

What about "de chase, is bedder dan de catch"

or "Is id a bird, is id a plane, id muz be dave, whose on de train"

"de bird, de sea, de land, de tree,"

"How much is de fish ?"

........  marvellous.

Agreed! Scooter have a real way with words! I  had MTV on the other day and one of their tunes came on, one line I remember- 'respect to the man in the ice cream van!'- Genius!
