Reading biogs of many footballers 60s through to now, I would argue standards have gone up! Souness, LeTiss, Sir Bobby (Charlton and Robson), Mick Rathbone and a couple of Clough-related books are ones I've read over this past summer alone, and some of the drinking stories make Best look teetotal! I don't think it's new or a decline in standards as much as a more open profile.

Think you're idealising a bit, personally. In any case, he looks neither drunk nor high on the pics, so I don't see the problem. Looks like a dull night out to me.

Larry Lloyd talks similarly about Clough always making him crave praise, so he'd strive to go that extra step every game. The praise only ever came once (when they won the league title) and it was 'if we won it, you must've played alright this season'.

Knowing that Samuel is out for the season, I wonder if we'll see another striker come in? Not sure if it's needed, personally, but it wouldn't surprise me.
