Absolutely crazy isn't it. The fact that the ref could go to the screen in the World Cup was a key reason in why it worked with this half cooked idea that we have come up with games in effect have two referees.
-
VAR worked very well in the World Cup, where there were no English refs. As soon as our refs get hold of it carnage commences. Why do the officials not go over to the screen and look at the incident before overturning the decisions, that was one of the reasons why it worked so well at the World Cup. English football is awash with such money yet we still have the worse refs in the world, cowboys the lot of them.

It would only really make sense if Dack is going and Mowbray has decided to play 2 up front rather than find a number 10 to directly replace him. I assume Assombalonga is a permanent deal (as I can see what Boro gain by loaning him out) and selling Dack would help fund what would have to be a decent fee and wages to get Assombalonga.

If Reed doesn't want to end up another Todd Kane then he needs to be moving in the summer. I think Southampton will stay up and I can't see he getting much of a look in under the new manager. It may well be his dream to play Premier League but he wouldn't be the first who has needed to take a step down in order to take that step back up.
-
He was sent off in the cup so his suspension will only apply in the cup.
-
You have to pay for quality.
-
I hope he's being brought in as a striker. He was played wide last time by Mowbray and as a result he was probably the only player that looked better under Coyle.
-
Of those I'd say Brereton and Butterworth could do with a loan spell the most. Butterworth isn't going to play unless we have an injury crisis and as for Brereton he isn't contributing to the first team whereas Nuttall is.

One of the first out the door in the summer I'd have thought.

This is the dilemma with Bennett most of his good work when he plays full back always come in offense but when it comes to defending Nyambe is a much safer bet, Bennett is ropey when it comes to the fundamentals of defending as a full back. At home when you control possession (like today) you can get away with Bennett at full back and he will also help in attack but for example at Brentford next week I would much rather see the more solid Nyambe at full back. Bennett's best position is in one of the advanced wide roles but he is going to be getting in ahead of Reed or Armstrong? Not for me.
-
I wouldn't be having Bennett in central midfield ahead of any of Evans, Travis, or Reed (who is in my opinion our best central midfielder) . Bennett doesn't use the ball well enough when ever he plays central midfield he gives the ball away too much either with wayward passing or speculative long range shots.
-
That was my first thought as well. I would also back Chapman to have more of an impact during the run in than I would Brereton. If we can bring Chapman and a striker in then I would definitely send Brereton out on loan.

An excellent first half followed by a steady second half. Having seen 180 minutes of Hull this season they are the worst team that I have seen this season that they can go on such as run as they have been on tells you all about the standard of this league. Raya- As easy an afternoon as he will probably have all season. Bennett- Did ok but he does try to play too many extravagant passes for a defender, some times like last week it comes of but it can also needlessly play us into trouble. Lenihan-Looks a different player alongside Rodwell. That's no criticism of Mulgrew but he look like he enjoys being the leader of the back line. Rodwell- If there was a debate about bringing Mulgrew back if he was fit today, there will be no debate about next week, another classy performance. Let's hope Mowbray is a bit more enthusiastic tonight about a new contract. Bell- A quiet afternoon didn't have a lot to do in defence and wasn't involved in many attacks. But he didn't do anything wrong for the second game in a row which is progress. Evans- Last week I said he had gone back to the Evans of old after an excellent first few months to the season but today he was much more like the Evans of the first few months of the season. A frustrating player, he can have a game like today where he dominates the midfield but then other weeks you won't even notice that he's playing. Travis- What can you say about the lad he hasn't had a bad game yet. Looks like he has been playing at this level for years rather than a few weeks. His emergences meaning the splitting up of Evans and Smallwood has been crucial to this run. Reed-A testament to just how good a player he is that he is our best central midfielder, is being playing out of position and he is still one of our best players. Sign Him Up! Armstrong- Amazing what his cameo at Milwall has done for him. Looks a different player, oozing confidence and also seems to have bulked up a bit as well. Dack-He might not be scoring but still having a great impact. Beautiful ball through to Armstrong for the opener and for the third goal some fantastic tracking back which forced there player in to giving the ball away from which we broke and scored. Graham- The knock down for the opener epitomises what he does best. Bullied there back line. Class. Of the subs Rothwell impressed again, he is only going to get better the more that he plays. Technically as good as anyone that we have.
-
He's under 24 so we would have to pay compensation anyway.
-
I'd hope a nominal fee on an 18 month contract with another year option in the clubs favour. Pace is such a key aspect of Chapman's game and some of that which we saw last year will have gone already after 3 hamstring injuries in a year.
-
The vast majority of our squad had played Championship football, if there is one thing that our side doesn't lack it's experience. The only regular starter this season that hadn't played at this level before is Dack and he is probably our best player.
-
You obviously forget where we were when Souness took over.
-
You are forgetting Souness and Hughes
-
Nuttall has hardly had a huge amount of opportunities either but he's shown in the last two league games that he is capable of making a positive impact on the team something Brereton has failed to do despite having more game time.
-
Come on you aren't seriously saying that wouldn't sign a player from abroad because of the British weather? Thank goodness Hughes didn't take that approach when signing the likes of Samba, Mokoena or Nelsen, or indeed Allardyce when he signed Givet. Perhaps we shouldn't sign players from south of Birmingham as it might get a bit cold for them further up the country. As for being a car journey away there is such a thing as a plane if a player lives in the south east of England it would probably take him as long to get down there by car (with the M6 and M25 these days) than it would be to get a flight to say France or Germany. Also you say 'Managers don't take risks unless they need to, Mowbray at this point doesn't need to' if that's the case then how do you explain Brereton?
-
If think its more if they don't cost £7 Million.
-
But you could sign him in July and all the same problems could still apply. Also you could sign someone from the south of England and have similar issues or indeed Scottish players (Barry Ferguson). Very strange comments from Mowbray in my opinion.
-
But Mowbray has talked about building a team for the long term so it does seem to be a rather short term attitude to be saying he won't sign someone from abroad because he may take a couple months to adapt. We aren't good enough to go up and we aren't going to go down, really we should already be starting to plan for next season. If the right player from abroad is available bring him in now he can adapt a new league, integrate with his new team mates, settle into a new country and learn the language if needed. Why would you not bring him in now so he can do all of the following and by August he will be ready for a new season. Whereas if you don't bring him in until July he will have about a month to have adapted before the start of the season. For me it's an illogical argument from Mowbray.
-
But if you sign them now they have plenty of time to get settle and be ready for next season. Whereas if you sign them in July and they take time to settle it could easily be a few months into the season before they are up to speed. It's a flawed argument from Mowbray especially considering how he has spoken about building a team for the future.
