Centre half is another story. They probably run the least of all the outfield players. You can easily play there until your mid thirties if you’ve looked after yourself.

I remember the United game Fred mentions very well. We’d been starved of football for what seemed like an age. Eventually the day dawned and we actually saw a game of football. At that moment Fred Pickering was bent down tying up a loose boot lace. Quixall dithered on the ball a bit and then turned and passed the ball back to Gregg. At that moment Fred stood up, the ball went straight to him. As good as a pass as we used to say. Fred just swivelled onto the ball and banged it straight into the back of the net !
