John Eustace - our head coach

He’s getting “ blood out of a stone “ at the moment. The team spirit is the best I’ve seen it for a long while. That’s taken us this far. -

All games are tough at this level. I just think we’re more suited to playing away than we are playing at home. Some decisions for JE to make regarding selection. There are at least three players in my opinion that played themselves out of selection at a normal club. If we had decent replacements they’d be on the bench for me. The experiment with Weimann was a failure and I don’t think Gueye is a starting player. Maybe it’s time to give Leonard another go up front although I’m not a fan. Bring the big guy on later if need be. Buckley isn’t Travis, playing in that role doesn’t suit him, for me he’s either a Cantwell stand in or a bench player. In the first half last night we had all three central midfield players all playing mainly in our half and we just couldn’t get forward momentum. We could give JRC a game there or start with Forshaw,, depending on his fitness levels. Hedges was completely ineffectual on Wednesday night, as was Dolan if we’re being honest however I don’t think ACD is a starting player either. I wouldn’t like to in JE’s shoes selecting the team for Saturday. -

The trouble is both of Gueye and ACD are poor when they start a game. I think Eustace knows that. -

Any time another club comes in for a player we’re linked with it’s game over. Nobody wants to play for the chicken chokers if there’s an alternative. Maybe they’ll want to play for Eustace now but normally it’s “ Thanks, but no thanks “. -

He made a great length of their half run late on in the second half that should have led to a goal. Plus he had their winger, who looked like he could be dangerous, under his thumb. -

A game of two halves. The first half was awful, Buckley, Tronstad and Cantwell were playing more in our half than theirs. The passing was abysmal, we rarely strung more than two passes together. The experiment of playing Weimann up front was a flop. It’s not his game. Every long ball from Pears came straight back into midfield. The game changed with the subs. Big Mak came on and changed the whole dynamic of the match. The ball started stopping in their half. Once the goal went in we stepped up a gear and got on top. At 3-0 we put our cue back in the rack and gave the two new lads some minutes. That was fine but we lost our shape somewhat and the game petered out. Scores Pears 6 not much to do but nearly made a complete hash of a clearance by rushing out of his goal for no reason. Brittain 8 M O M for me. Eustace has transformed this lad. He’s looking class at both ends of the pitch. Super goal just when we needed it. Sheareresque cross for Big Mak’s goal. The best crosser of a ball at the club. He has the complete range. Hyam 7 steady enough, should have done better with the first half header. Baath 7 hardly put a foot wrong. Beck 7 would you want to play against him ? I wouldn’t ! Fast, hard, ruthless. We must have the best pair of fullbacks in the league. Buckley 5 played himself out of the next match for me. Give JRC or Earnshaw a whirl there. Tronstad 7 not at his best tonight. Great intervention in front of goal in the first half. Cantwell 7 two great Tugay style balls and was involved in the goals but he was too deep in the first hour. Dolan 5 ineffectual, too many pointless pirouettes on the ball that led to him losing the ball Weimann 6 up front is not his best position. Inexplicably put a good chance in row Z. Got lucky with the goal, hitting it low into the space where the keeper was coming. Should have gone higher up the goal. Hedges 5, anonymous apart from playing Beck into trouble after Cantwell’s great cross field pass. subs Big Mac 8 totally changed the game. Even when he wasn’t getting a clean header on the ball he made sure their centre halves didn’t either. Scored a headed goal from a really difficult angle. ACD 6 good dummy for the goal. He’s too easily brushed off the ball when he runs into midfield. He should stay out wide and concentrate on just running at the fullback. JRC 6 hardly in the game out on the left wing. Forshaw 6 hardly in it apart from one passage of play were he cleared our lines with some good control and passing. Sanderson 7 I like this lad already. He likes a tackle without a doubt. So we take the 3 points and move on. Strangely I fancy our chances more at Oxford than I did tonight. -

That team’s a bit thin in midfield. Tronstad is going to be busy. -

So does Cantwell. He must be the slowest player at the club. -

They will come and give it a go. If we sit back and wait for them to roll over it won’t happen and they’ll play themselves into the game. We need to be at it right from the off. Fail to do that and it’ll be a long night. Their previous poor away record will count for nothing if we make it comfortable for them. I’m really disappointed that we’re still waiting to sign a striker. -

Winnable games are coming thick and fast now. I would have thought serious feelers would have been put out for at least one forward once we knew Ohashi was a medium term injury. -

How many goals has he scored versus how many really good chances has he had ? He misses too many at the moment. He needs to go somewhere were he can bang a few in and regain a bit of confidence in front of goal. -

They’d both be crap. Garner would be running around up front on his own looking for the occasional pass and Scotty would be playing on his “ wrong “ wing. -

He’s certainly worse than Ohashi, after that it depends which Gueye turns up.
