And we couldn't fix it because we'd spent most of the budget on him! Personally, I hope he comes good, we sell him for £20 million and buy some bloody defenders!! As if that will happen eh? Doesn't matter how well he plays this season, we should not have bought him for £7M last season. Wrong player, wrong priority, wrong fee. We are not in the luxurious position of buying players for high fees to sit them on the shelf till they come good----hopefully. City ,United,Liverpool yes but not us. We have to get out of this league. Sheffield United did it without spending anything like that but they had a better manager than we do. I think you're over-egging the pudding. Mowbray was quite scathing about the defence towards the end of last season and did say "defenders are coming". So we were entitled to think the defence would be substantially over hauled and several new defenders would come in. Otherwise he would have said something like "I'm unhappy with the defence but luckily there are several youngster ready to step up." A youth from City, sale of a contract player for a loan GK does not cut it. Maybe things are happening behind the scenes, I certainly hope so but its very late and, most mystifying of all, Mowbray's emphasis has been on mid-fielders and a striker! We needed a striker, particularly since we ludicrously misspent £7M on Brereton, but we needed a suitable centre-back (or two) first.And we still need a left-back and we have been linked with none.

TM is the best of them though and that's always the fear for a Rovers fan who thinks ahead. At some point he will be replaced (they always are) but what are the odds that the replacement will be worse?

It would depend on quality! Anyone remotely as good as Moran the MB would be overflowing with joy.

What need is a specialist big bastard of a central-half, preferably one whose played in that position for years and we can build a defence around. Sadly there is no chance we'll get one. I think of Kevin Moran and weep. Anyone ever criticise him for not being versatile?
