Second week running one of:

- the NoTW bottled it

- NoTW realised its notoriety would keep sales going so they spiked the story for a better moment

- m'learned friends found a new angle for threatening the press

- there was no story in the first place

...or some combination thereof.

Looks like Scolari is touting himself for the England job, despite his dodgy spoken English.

Scolari rejects language concerns

Scolari has the best background in international football of any of the candidates, his sides having knocked England out of the last two tournaments. This was on the way to Brazil winning the World Cup and Portugal reaching the final of Euro 2004. Certainly has a record as good as Hiddink (better if we are only including international football) and will be leaving Portugal after the World Cup.

Hiddink and Scolari though do seem to be going from job to job. I'd quite like someone with a bit more personal connection to the England job. Hughes played for Rovers, for example, so had something in common. That's hardly being xenophobic. Unfortunately, none seem good enough from England. The only Brit mentioned much is O'Neill but he has more important things to deal with in his life than football.

Hiddink or Scolari with Pearce as assistant?

"McClaren for England," chanted Middlesbrough fans again yesterday after another shockingly inept performace by 'Boro at the Riverside.

Flopsy probably doesn't agree with me about much, but we're both united in our view about Steve McClaren. I've always thought he's hugely overrated as a coach. Another Brian Kidd.

McClaren was fortunate enough to take over from Kidd at Old Trafford in the middle of the 98/99 season, when given the quality of United's midfield at the time - Keane, Scholes, Giggs and Beckham all at their peak - even Graham Taylor or Stan Ternent could have come in as United's coach and they would have won the Premiership. But McClaren was hailed by sections of the media as some kind of Messiah after United won the treble.

The same media who at the start of the season said that 'Boro were top six contenders and an outside bet for the Champions League. They now find themselves just one place above the relegation zone.

Watching the highlights of 'Boro's shocking display against Villa, the body language of the players told a story in itself. Many of them are playing without pride, passion, desire and commitment. They are playing like a side doomed. I certainly think that relegation is a possibility if they carry on in this vein.

Yakubu and Viduka look immobile and don't appear to be on the same wavelength. Look at the money McClaren has spent on strikers - £8m for Maccorone cheese. The midfield looks unorganised and doesn't track back properly. The team are leaking goals like they are going out of fashion, they need a replay to defeat non-league Nuneaton Borough and some of the fans are throwing their season tickets away in disgust at the lack of commitment they see on the pitch.

"Crisis? What crisis?" says McClaren.

Knowing the dimwits at the FA, they'll probably be thinking about appointing this plonker....

Quite worryingly at Boro is the number of tempermental players that he has signed, not in the violent sense but in the 'bothered' sense. This is fine if people are fired up but really works against you in a relegation scrap. This combined with boro's apparent attitude at the moment doesn't suggest he's much of a motivator. On the plus side he has brought some good youngsters through and has had some international experience with england.

Even so you wouldn't want him at ewood, he's spent a lot for not very much, and Boro really should have done better with the resources they had even before you take this season into account. How the FA can consider someone who looks like he's getting a team that really should be too good to go down in terms of talent and squad size, for a top post is laughable.

In fairness to Macarone he did look ace in the under 21 euro championship or the like, but this is hardly a one off incident - Ricketts springs to mind amongst others.

I don't give two hoots about Boro but one thing about McClaren that really infuriates me is after recent games when he says, "we're not defending properly and if you're conceeding goals like we are then you're not going to win games."

You're the manager! You sort out it then! If he was England manager would he shrug his shoulders in the same way when we get knocked out of the World Cup 3-0 by some non-entity like Sweden or Mexico?

And apparently after the game, some unhappy Boro fans were waiting at the front entrance. When Mark Viduka was leaving, he responded to some accusations that he was spineless and lazy by laughing, blowing a kiss to some of the crowd and sarcastically thanking them for their support.

And to think some here wanted to sign Viduka.............anyhow, it would be a sad day for England if McClaren becomes manager. the red faced gimp will ensure Beckham and co. would be able to have a relaxing summer holiday in 2008.

He has the same flaws as Sven in the tactics and personality department, only more so.

Hes been taking a load of crap, some of it supposedly quite threatening, from a large amount of Boro supporters who have been waiting for him after every game. Good to see he shrugs it off, couldn't see Rooney ever doing that.

The usual suspects are being touted, and have been so since Sven was put in charge. There is nothing new with Curbishley, McClaren, Allardyce. I have no idea who we should get but it isn't any one of these. Top level football management is quickly turning into a two man approach; a coach who does training and a motivator who is the top man. Rovers had it with Dalglish and Harford, Sven doesn't do much coaching, so why not get a spot on coach in and a master motivator with a bit of respect.

McClaren already essentially does the coaching for England on a part time basis.

The problem with appointing a full time coach is that he would only actually get to coach the maximum of maybe seven weeks in a year! I wouldn't mind that job...

Rooney is neither spineless nor lazy. Is there any particular reason for this vendetta?

I dunno, im not a Boro fan. If you want another player as comparison, Paulo Di Canio wouldn't take the same sort of stick.

Juventus coach Fabio Capello has been offered the England job, according to reports in Italy.

The Corriere dello Sport have revealed that Capello has been offered a four-year contract believed to be worth around £19million from the FA to take over from Sven Goran Eriksson after the World Cup.

The Juventus boss, who looks favourite to win the Serie A title this season, is contracted at the Stadio Olympico until 2007 but his future at the club has been put in doubt recently.

Juventus' chief operating officer, Antonio Giraudo hinted this week that the Bianconeri are on the lookout for Capello's successor with Roma trainer Luciano Spalletti the prime target.
