[Archived] Salgado interview

Recommended Posts

Can't find the Salgado thread. There is an excellent interview with Salgado in today's Independent. Perhaps someone more technically gifted than me can put up a link.

Highlights: -

Capello is a good manager but the FA are right to want an englishman as his successor

Allardyce could manage England - he has done a magnificent job over the last few years

Mourinho style is not the Spanish way. He doesn't know if Real fans will like to see his style.

Agreed. We wouldn't be looking at the relegation battle and we'd be playing better football. Very short-sighted of someone.

The Trust lost any semblance of ambition some time ago. They lost touch with reality at around the same time as nobody with even the slightest clue about The Premier League could expect a club to remain in the top flight for long by selling virtually all of it's playing assets and spending next to nothing to replenish the squad.

Hopefully, new owners will sanction wages for the likes of Guti and Raul. I think blending players of that ilk with bargains like Samba, N'Zonzi, possibly Linganzi and the occasional Jones like gem from the Accademy could be a sustainable way forward.

That interview is certainly one in the eye for the anti-Sam brigade - we have one of the most decorated club footballers in recent history who's played under multiple managers singing the praises of Sam Allardyce, and the likes of Guti and Raul wanting to play under him based on what they've heard. It seems his reputation amongst the professionals is a lot higher than his reputation in the media.

Absolute rubbish. Sure we neeed new players but if for example we'd had Salgado's two mates last year then we may just possibly have overhauled Brum and possibly at a stretch Everton. IF we had managed both and thats a big IF, we'd likely have gained a couple of million from the Prem but the process would have cost us between 4 and 6 million in wages alone! Where is the sense in that? We'll never be in the top four again without somebody throwing stupid money at us (don't hold your breath on that one btw) so the aim has to be to stay on the Prem gravy train by astute management and spending as little as possible to do so.

Boards that lost touch with reallity are to be found in Leeds, Portsmouth, Southampton, East London, Liverpool, Sheffield, Coventry, Nottingham etc etc etc. Bolton look like they will be joining that list soon too. So many clubs have been left in severe financial disadvantage by misplaced ambition and foolish but readily available funding that will either destroy them of keep them in a state of relative poverty for many years.

You need to think things through a little more before you criticise so readily.

Indeed. I cannot imagine that anyone would prefer it the other way around when one takes into account the likes of John Bond, Bryan Robson, Paul Ince, MoN etc.

It's not often I agree with you, but you really have hit the nail on the head here!

While I thoroughly agree with you in regards to marquee signings like Raul & Guti, in the twilight of their careers, whose wages would outweigh our revenue, I have to resent the board for not backing Hughes with signings like Lassana Diarra or Tom Huddlestone. Hughes was working miracles in the transfer market and deserved backing from the board. Diarra went on to make £20m for Pompey and Huddlestone is an established PL midfielder.

Ho hum.

This is spot on. How many places did we have to finish higher to account for Salgado's wages? 2 or 3? And it would be very generous to suggest that Mich was the reason we came 10th instead of the budgeted 13th.

The finances of acquiring Raul and Guti were done to death at the time, It would have been a huge gamble, worth taking, we'll never know.

So how are they doing in their twilight years this season.

Raul, 3 in 11

Guti 3 in 9

Life in the old dogs yet, shame about the money. ;)

Guti is more of a provider than a goal scorer, would be interesting to find out how many assists he has in those nine games.

How much is avoiding relegation worth theno?

A lot Torgeir. No doubt about that but it's a hell of a lot worse if a relegated club goes down carrying massive debt. For a club on our resources it's a very fine balancing act between staying up and staying out of debt.

I'm with you all the way with you there Topman. As I've said before by giving Mark Hughes what was tantamount to a huge vote of no confidence (and especially after the miracles which he had achieved in the transfer market) we effectively killed the Goose that laid the Golden egg. Some stupid decisions without a doubt and almost as bad as not adding Zidane and Dugarry to the team for a reported 9.5m circa 95/96 BUT but remember we are in an enviable position of being able to comment with the benefit of hindsight. JW said that he pulled the purse strings shut after Hughes had requested to speak to NUFC regarding their vacant managerial position, so who knows how we would have fared if Hughes had simply met Mike Ashley in secret in Portugal as he did with Gary Cooke? He'd have missed out to Keegan just the same but we'd prob have made 15m out of the Diarra deal and multiplied that up every year with shrewd signings.

Good answer. Wasn't disagreeing with your first post btw, just trying to give it a balanced view :)
