Tim Southampton Rover Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Why not? The Indians are big, big punters, and whilst not the biggest drinkers in the world, if they could make a quid from it, then it wouldn't bother them. When I went to India, we asked for a large martini in our hotel bar. It was AMAZING, they gave us the equivalent of 5 glasses The bar man didn't have a clue. We spent most nights there

Paul Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Seems to me people are forgetting we have lost four players to date in this window. Both Jones's have gone and clearly will be missed, RSC and Diouf mean we are short on strikers even if they aren't very good. If Kalinic leaves we will be looking for, at least: Centre half Three strikers Defensive midfield - arguably two as PJ played two roles I don't believe this is going to happen and if it does will not be players of any real quality. There is no "brighter future" for Rovers or the majority of clubs. For years I've pointed out the dangers of the PL and for me PJ leaving sums it all up. I give up. No point in spending the summer fretting about this as we will watch the same cr@p next season as last. Even dreaming of better times delusional as it just isn't going to happen Brighter future my arse, we've all been shafted - AGAIN.
joey_big_nose Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 To be fair there are reasons to be hopeful - Hanley and Lowe coming through, plus Formica, Nzonzi ,Olsson and Rochina continuing to develop,on top of whoever else we bring in. If we hold onto Hoilett we still have a very promising team. The key is strikers - two first rate forwards and things will look much rosier than this time last season. Add Jermaine Jones and I will be excited.
Paul Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 JJ and two first rate forwards? Won't happen. We will kick off weaker next season than we did last. No future, no hope.
joey_big_nose Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 JJ and two first rate forwards? Won't happen. We will kick off weaker next season than we did last. No future, no hope. Chin up lad, we still have the best set of young players to grace the shirt in twelve years at least. No need to be morbid - we've been through this before with Cruz, Bentley, Duff etc etc. We'll keep on going.
Mike Graham Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 JJ and two first rate forwards? Won't happen. We will kick off weaker next season than we did last. No future, no hope. Paul,we also sold a fantastic goalkeeping hope in Frankie Fielding for just over £400K. On the issue of shirts if we finish up with Venky's on the front we might just hit two dozen in sales. The future is chicken s@@t.
Mercer Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 No future, no hope. I think this is how many Rovers' supporters are now feeling. I think season ticket sales are going to be hammered.
tashor Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 There is no "brighter future" for Rovers or the majority of clubs. For years I've pointed out the dangers of the PL It is not the PL that has caused all the problems. Jones left to join a "champions" league club - I debated this many years ago with you. The PL at least has a relatively fair way of distributing income to give the possibility for the likes of us a small chance of competing with the bigger clubs. The champions league is a cartel of the big clubs ( unless you are backed by such as the owners of man city and can spend around 300 million pounds ) that vastly increases their income and status which allows them to poach the top talent to play in that league ( and enhance their profile and international ambitions - see how quickly Jones will be a full international ) - we will never have the chance to become a regular member of this league - hence THIS is unfair. The only possible solution to this is to only allow clubs to be in one league - the issue was ducked many years ago when the top clubs threatened to join a pan-european league. They should've been rushed out of the door at this stage - we would now be in a PL where the winners and other positions changed frequently. I hope and pray that our top clubs become even greedier and object to the PL redistribution of income and demand their full share of domestic TV rights resulting in them breaking away to form an armchair supporters wet dream of a european super league.

Yes we've sold players but at this moment in time we have no idea what the kfc wannabees are intending doing.could be good could be us going bust and them taking the kitchen sink!
Paul Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 I think I agreed with you last time tashor and I'd certainly agree with everything in the post above.

Problem with big clubs all going to a different league - such as creating a european club league - is the money. Money would then leave the prem and go to the new league. The prem would then be just like the championship etc. Unless there was promotion and relegation into a european league of clubs, it could work - but I doubt it. But even then every major league would want at least one of their countries team in that league. Which would make it a nightmare to set up. But as already mentioned, the money would follow to the new league and leave the prem.
Gav Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 If we had a Benitez or Hughes managing the club, I'm sure most people would see the sale of Jones and the reported transfer kitty as an exciting prospect, because we can’t do anything about the Jones sale now can we. But many people have valid concerns about Kean being given the budget, I’m fine with it, he can bring in Diouf and RSC, won’t cost very much surely, as long as he brings in a quality striker also. Then we move to the defence, plenty of decent defenders out there, surely we can pick up a couple for the money we’ve received for Jones. When we kick off in August, that will be the time to judge, but hold on to your hats lads and lasses, its going to be a bumpy ride.
Paul Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 When we kick off in August, that will be the time to judge, but hold on to your hats lads and lasses, its going to be a bumpy ride. I understand the view GAV but have to say since Venky's arrived it's been suggested a judgement should be made at the end of the January Window, end of the season, after six months, now it's suggested the August KO. If any progress was being made this would be fair comment but the club, at all levels, has simply gone backwards since their arrival. When is the right time to judge? I'm taking a leaf out of your book for now, I've just given up bothering / worrying about it. I have no influence so the simplest solution is to sit back and wait for KO in August. I'm not that fussed about Jones as an individual leaving though I think it is the start and not the end of sales.

Nobody could have foreseen Kean being appointed after Allardyce was sacked, so whilst I was willing to judge after the January window, that changed when they put Kean in charge. I then personally wanted to judge the manager/Venkys at the end of the season, we stayed up, job done, success in my eyes. But now we’ve been forced to sell our main asset, I now want to judge the regime once the transfer window is finished and we’ve done our business. If we fail to make significant signings to replace our losses, I’ll be all for Venkys out, but if we do decent business, and spend a few quid, this would setout venkys intetions and we can look forward to a brighter future.

Its not just about the amount of money spent, its the quality of the player, we could blow a fortune on Roque and then what? The signings have to be an improvement on what we have and they have got to perform and gel with the rest of the team!!
Gav Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Its not just about the amount of money spent, its the quality of the player, we could blow a fortune on Roque and then what? The signings have to be an improvement on what we have and they have got to perform and gel with the rest of the team!! Exactly, but the amount of transfer kitty shows the owners ambition, they're well within there rights to bank the Jones money and give Kean nothing, so the money available says allot to me.
John Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 We obviously need to add to the quality to the squad, however some are too obsessed with how much we spend. I reckon our operation costs (e.g. wage bill) are very high at the moment so hopefully any money we have is used wisely. Currently there has been little commercial activities to bring any additional income into the club, step forward Mr Hunt - IMO, Venky's should have seized the moment as soon as they bought the club, hopefully there is a constructive plan in place (appreciate some things do take time).
Exiled in Toronto Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 The signings have to be an improvement on what we have and they have got to perform and gel with the rest of the team!! So no different to any other window under any other manager then. No doubt any Kean signings who don't reach these criteria will generate 200-page threads on here because all our previous signings were improvements and instantly slotted in.
tashor Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 But as already mentioned, the money would follow to the new league and leave the prem. I'm really not so sure but maybe that would be a good thing.
rog of the rovers Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Player power rules today's football. As soon as someone wants to leave, the club pretty much has to sell them. Venkys said we're not a selling club, and I'm sure Jones wasn't sold because we had to (unlike during the 00s when selling players was essential to keeping the club competitive) but rather because HE wanted to go. What about this as an example. Player A is getting paid a fortune, at a club with serious ambition, they appear to be well run and have enjoyed moderate success in recent years, but have a very a bright future ahead. Would Player A want to leave that scenario? You'd think not. Now substitute 'Player A' with the name Carlos Tevez and what do you get? Player power! If they aren't happy you can't keep them, whether your skint like Stanley, comfortable like Rovers or mega rich like City! I remember going to the National Football Museum a couple of years ago and reading a display about the great Sir Tom Finney. He was told by the Preston chairman that he had to play for PNE or he wouldn't play at all, despite reported interest from bigger clubs in England and across Europe. The Chairman had the power back then! Now it appears we have come full circle!
Roversi Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 depends what people claim to be a brighter future, a future where Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City, Spurs and Liverpool dominate the top 6. a future where the only way to get into europe will be to win a cup (an easy ask) or to be little good boys and get lucky enough to qualify through the fair play. Shame really, the days when teams like us and Bolton would have a class season and finish 6th are over, finishing in the top 10 nowadays is a an achivement in its self when you have 8-9 teams battling over 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th. Sadley the prem is getting more readable every single season.

No doubt any Kean signings who don't reach these criteria will generate 200-page threads on here because all our previous signings were improvements and instantly slotted in. He now has the largest transfer kitty in Rovers history, if he blows money on Roque and MB Diouff as he has indicated, then he bloody well deserves all the stick he gets!!
Gav Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 He now has the largest transfer kitty in Rovers history, if he blows money on Roque and MB Diouff as he has indicated, then he bloody well deserves all the stick he gets!! You’re getting far to hung up on RSC and Diouf Kelbo. They’re incidentals in the grand scheme of things, its which major striker they bring in that counts.
PAFELL Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Its not just about the amount of money spent, its the quality of the player, we could blow a fortune on Roque and then what? The signings have to be an improvement on what we have and they have got to perform and gel with the rest of the team!! Of all the times to get in a decent manager, it is now. Bring back Mark Hughes, if we have the reported transfer kitty.
RibbleValleyRover Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 You’re getting far to hung up on RSC and Diouf Kelbo. They’re incidentals in the grand scheme of things, its which major striker they bring in that counts. So your happy for Rovers to waste money on two ###### poor strikers as long as we bring in a decent one? How about forgetting those two losers and buying two quality ones instead? Surely you recognise that Rovers (not since the days of Jack) don't have big budgets and that this money needs to be spent wisely? This could be the last time in years that we have a decent budget to spend, every signing needs to be worth the money. Santa Cruz and Diouf go against that.
