Goodwillie, bankrupt and working as a labourer for a firm of electricians!

A cautionary tale for footballers.

Also notable that despite being cleared of rape he was fine £100k in a civil court because “he probably did it”.

He still plays for semi-pro Clyde in Scottish 4th division. 2nd top scorer with 15. The kids still got it.

What a scumbag, a known scumbag when we signed him as was Stokes and almost identical very murky deal and he'll end up the same way.

Kean brings in Goodwille ( Always remember Craig Brown on a live interview saying if Kean got the Blackburn job permanent he had an agreement in place to sign Goodwille)

Coyle brings in Stokes...........

Don't ever anyone tell me those toerags and their pals weren't up to no good giving homes to players no one else would touch on those type of deals and contracts.

Heard from a reliable source who knows Stokes that he is being paid £18,000 a week over there... IN CASH. Buys high end stuff over there like Rolexes and brings them back to sell.

What an odd career he has had. Clearly a bit of head case. The thing is he has talent. They had huge hopes for him at Arsenal.

Outside court, Goodwillie said he understood that the tax was due on £103 worth of private medical care and "other benefits" valued at £66,000, including an "an agents' fee", which he claimed he never actually saw, received when he was at Blackburn in the 2012-13 tax year.

He claimed: "The agent obviously received a fee, and the players have to pay the tax on it."

"I don't understand how HMRC reckon I got £66,000 worth of 'other benefits'.

"I never had a company car, I paid my own rent, they [Blackburn] didn't give me any 'other benefits'. When they paid me, my tax came off anyway, so I was never self-employed to do my own tax."

I think we can take an educated guess where the mystery benefits ended up  like much of the other money during that period

The sad thing is that the lad can’t even afford a solicitor, let alone one good enough to take on our old friends.

Maybe Goodwillie should contact David Conn to ask a few questions on his behalf...

Doubt whether anything underhand took place. Looks like a signing on fee which would be reported to the Inland Revenue. Because the player would be on PAYE the revenue would raise a separate assessment for the fee. He won't be the first footballer who thought he had got the money tax free. The revenue are sometimes lax in chasing up these amounts because they are one off transactions. Dodgy dealings take place in cash payments which never get put through the books.

Why would they chase him up? Why wouldn’t the tax just have been deducted before it reached him?

Because he would have the right to set off any eligible expenses against it, which would include anything he had agreed to pay his agent. Different rules from PAYE.

How did they know that he had been paid it if it didn’t go through his salary?

Left them found it to tough living there and went to the airport with another lad and disappeared. Scum bag

It would appear in Rovers books as an expense

Makes sense.

I actually feel a little sorry for the lad. Too much too soon, a lack of decent managerial guidance, and then banished back to the small time. I’m sure he had a great time with all the money at the time but he’s paying for it now.

Your sympathy might be a bit misplaced. Possibly why he represented himself was that he refused to pay the legal costs of his rape case and got away with it when the law firm declined to bankrupt him. As for not knowing what the amount was for he employed an accountancy firm who reduced the assessment by showing his legitimate deductions. From what I can see the bill should have been for £16,000 but is up to £41,000 because of the time he has spent evading it. Dickson Etuhu lost a similar (but slightly different) case recently. There is a belief among footballers that because they move around so much the bill will not follow them. Etuhu went out of the country but HMRC has an international division. The players cannot even claim naivety. I know of two ex Rovers who have always employed PAs to deal with this and always advised young players to do the same or even use their PA, even offering them the chance to do it free. It baffles me why players think they are untraceable. Mind you a World War One deserter played openly for the club after the war and was only apprehended about nine months later.

I did not know about this. Can you provide further info?

I am interested in all historical aspects of Rovers and some may find this of interest:

and this of more general Lancs interest: https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/883711.lancashire-ww1-deserters-get-pardoned/

You will not find this reported. My memory served me wrong he was actually a deserter for three and a half years (I have a copy of his confession). During this time he played for the Rovers. His case did not come up until 1922 when he was not charged Under Section 73 but discharged. The story is both hilarious but also tragic and in fairness is complex and needs explaining fully which would take more space than this forum affords. The reason I raised it was that footballers appear to think that they are out of sight even in full view.

Sounds like they had a lot of our old foe 'bad advice' in their time at Ewood.

Now how could that be ?

I said when he was pulling his stunt here that this plonker would end up on skid row or worse before he's 40.  I see no reason to doubt that.
