[Archived] Question for Philipl/Grabko

Recommended Posts

How much in your opinion would it take to buy Blackburn Rovers? This is a serious question. Where shall I start? One of the richest men in the UK has just asked me to find out how much it would take to buy BRFC. In recent weeks he has been offered several clubs eg Plymouth Argyll but he has no affinity towards them. However, having grown up in the North West he is intrigued by Blackburn. I realise starting such a thread will open me up to huge abuse on here (accusations of being a WUM) but even if you have the slightest interest perhaps we could take this offline.

I imagine this is exactly how one of the richest men in the UK would go about their business.

"Mate, I wonder how much it would cost to buy rovers? "

"Want me to ask some strangers on an open Internet forum? "

"I think that would be for the best"

I understand your skepticism but it's not that crazy.

Why pay a load of over priced brokers, who to be honest wouldn't have a clue where to start anyway, thousands of pounds to get the info, when for free you can tap into people that have spent the last few years studying everything they possibly could about Rovers finer financial details.

At least initially to get a ball park figure, and then if it wets your whistle you can get the over priced professionals to investigate further and take it from there.

Rich people don't get rich by wasting money on things that can be gained for nothing.

And it always makes me laugh how people assume the average man on the street (i.e. fanatical football fans) can't be just as informative on some subjects as high flying professionals in the city of London that get paid thousands of pounds an hour and wear flashy suits. Just depends on the topic.

I don't see anything wrong either with the original question. Most business is done still by sounding things out first in a non business situation. Folks ask players mates if they think theyd fancy a move etc. It happens all the time. No point making any formal kind of approach if there's no chance and you're not going to be able to fund it anyway. However, you put out feelers like this and see what happens. If it doesn't materialise it was always just a wind up, and if it does then you've saved yourself a lot of time and hassle in the initial stages. I can sort of believe the question is being asked, especially if finances are as bad as some believe. word of that gets round too. Having said all that, I don't think they want to sell, or at least I dont think they can all agree to sell.

Correct Yoda. The value of something can only be decided by a. the seller and b. what someone else is willing to pay for it. Asking us lot for an estimate is just a shot on the dark. Personally and ignoring the debt I'd value the assets of the club at no more than 20m .... and whoever stumps that will have to be prepared to lose the lot and quite probably more besides. As AMS opined 'an idiot with a death wish' is necessary.

Yeah, the answer is = however much the Venky's would accept (if they were indeed willing to sell).

One of the richest men in England and from the north west?

Not sure who that could be...?

Duke of Westminster.

Yeah right.

Guest Norbert

The only answer I could give is: A lot more than it would have cost before Venky's took over.

And I am in the very sceptical group. Venky's probably won't sell, and Mr. X doesn't exist.

A serious business person does not ask a mate to post a thread on an internet messageboard.

Yet because they say "I'm not a WUM" everyone is supposed to buy it?

I'm with Abbey on this one. Three posts to their name, the last two of which are from October last year? The same poster voted that they would "accept" Judan Ali as Rovers manager but went on to say they weren't a WUM then too.

Never thought I would EVER say this; but..................Better the Devil you know etc!

Added to the fact that we are now rid of the problem that was really dragging us down (Kean and other outside influences); things SEEM to be heading in the right direction at the moment (albeit very slowly) but personally I think we should all remain calm and trust in GB to get us back where we long to be. We also need to be patient as it may take more than just this season, but so far he is doing OK.

Didn't it come out recently that one poster here joined to make some positive posts about one or both of the Ians at the request of them?

So it's not completely unknown for people to use message boards in this way.

It only 'came' out because the poster themselves admitted it. I know exactly who you are talking about.

But you do really think one of the richest men in the UK would ask his mate to ask a bunch of Rovers fans what the club will cost?

You've presented it, now take it offline, before it gets ugly.

TBH Kingstonians, Philipl and Grabko might be able to give you a price that they think Venkys would sell at.

but Venkys have been approach a number of times by different investors asking about buying the club and Venkys have just simply ignored them.

I very doubt whether Venkys would sell but you just never know.

anyway, what would your Boss/mate plans be for the club?

Ok- responses not as bad as I expected. Firstly I wasn't asked to post on an open internet forum. I did that as I know Philip and Grabko have scrutinized Rovers/Venkys' accounts and it was a way getting some info.

The situation is that Mr X put in a serious bid for a premiership club a few years back and narrowly missed out. When I spoke to him back in April, he didn't regret it and thought he had dodged a bullet. However, now he is looking again/ being approached by various clubs. We are good mates and have spoken about Blackburn on numerous occasions. When we last spoke tbh I thought he was joking when he said he reckoned Venky's must be fed up by now. He then moaned about some of the teams he had been offered then put the ball in my court by saying that if I could find out how much they wanted and prove he wouldn't lose money hand over fist then he would buy it (obviously Venky's would have to be willing which to date they haven't been). I am not naive and realise it is a very long shot but I need to feed his interest and then he would invest time and more importantly money to pour over it properly. There is no question about him being able to afford it.

I realise this forum has heard it all before and people will be skeptical as I would be. I'm not bothered whether people on hear believe it or not- I'll do my own homework and get back to him. I think the odds of it happening are no better than 50-1 (I suspect the debt will be horrendous) but worth a shot.
