A combative midfielder who grafts and puts in a shift and a component specialist striker. Not a midfielder who can fill in at right back or be used on the left wing. Not a striker who can play midfielder or be used as an emergency centre back.

Versatility is of course great but it seems we want EVERY signing to be able to cover a number of positions. It's not smart or realistic.

Proper doom and gloom stuff over on the PNE board. Talk of asset stripping, bad relationship between fans and Ridsdale, even someone saying a League 1 club had a bid accepted for Riis which I find hard to believe. Obviously some fear in the post-Hemmings world over there.

No harm in us looking there for a good deal though similar to Hyam at Coventry.

Who am I kidding? None of the better players on that list would come here. They'll be offered way better deals by other clubs, and they'd probably all get in there before us anyway, considering how slow we are to pull the trigger.

Have we got a new team yet?

Of our lot I would keep Dack, Brittain, Ayala, Kaminski, Hyam, and Scott Wharton.....

When I first read this I thought "bit extreme" but as it sank in I tend to agree more and more. Assume you are banking on BBD being sold or leaving? I'd probably keep Hedges too. Would obviously keep some of the younger lads A.Wharton and Philips but yeah clear the deadwood and let the "project" really begin. Thing is, our should be fringe players are regular starters and you become desensitised to it.

Yep, we even have some people on here and twitterland awaiting with baited breath the return of Super Bucko as our midfield is so shite.  We've sunk very low thinking he's coming in on a black steed to save our season.

If we want a central midfielder which we should then it should be a natural one, not a makeshift one.

Wouldn't be the first time players have been converted to a different position. Didn't Sam play Phil Jones in a defensive midfield role. Going back even further Fred Pickering started life as a defender before becoming one of the countries best strikers. It can happen , nothing wrong with being versatile.

The thing is we should be in with a real shout for getting players in. I'm not up on the exact budget but I would assume we have a better one than at least half the teams in the division. Then you have the parachute payment boys who can still pay PL wages. They tend to go for more elite players than good or very good championship players. That leaves about 6-8 teams that we should be battling it out with to sign decent standard available championship players.

Yup I purposely left him off because if it was my decision I would cash in and invest the lot now, but we know that won't be the case with this lot. Also excludes some of the young lads as they don't start.....But certain players I would actively look to ship out, Travis and Gallagher would be first.

Yeah I saw the propoganda going on this very thread earlier for some bizarre reason. We know he isn't the answer. Just wait and see at the end of the season the narrative will be "if he had played more or was used better we wouldn't have been where we are" etc etc. He's played his way out of the team let's not forget that. He was given the chances, not up to it end of story. I'd sell him in the morning you know that.

The midfield has to be addressed by getting some presence and authority in there. Our current options are wet wipes.

Ryan Fraser as been made available, wouldn’t mind him on loan for rest of season. Exactly what we need someone with a bit of pace and a end product

Would be a quality signing.

Bournemouth signing another wide attacker, surely Dembele is available.

A couple of million would go a long way with players on that list. Loads of players there would immediately improve our first team. Sadly “the project” is more important.

Yeah on the fence with BBD but given the current form maybe cashing in is the right call, if the funds will be made available of course. Would keep him if we looked like we had a real shot at promotion this season but that's looking extremely fragile recently.

Aware I'm probably in the minority here but I don't mind Gallagher but will conceed that all the critism he has received recently has been warranted. Seems there is a player in there by my god he does his best to hide it most of the time.

even at 50% oh his wages I doubt we could afford him.

and you'd also imagine they'd want a loan fee.

That be a great signing but unfortunately geography plays a big role these days. Imagine if he fancied staying in the area that he is exactly the type of player Tony down the road would like or maybe a move back down South. Could also see him going to Celtic or Rangers for some reason.

We already had Jones, if we want a central midfielder we should actively sign one, not one who can do a job there.

You'd think we'd be in with a shout, we probably look quite appetising at a glance too - a big club with a great bit of history, usually floating in or around the play-off spots, good ground etc.

But realistically, we've no chance of landing any of the good free agents.

Dan Barlaser for example, is reportedly on about £5k a week at Rotheram. He'd probably be delighted to come here, continue playing in the championship and increase his wages a bit... then all of a sudden Middlesbrough or West Brom storm in, offer him around £15-20k a week and it's onto the next one for us. Meanwhile, the quality of these freebies gets lower and lower, until just the rejects remain.

Our best chance would be to pay a bit of a fee and try to nab them now, but that can't happen... JDT continues to reiterate how skint we are.

Just read that he's apparently on £63k pw!! We'd need that one heavily subsidised by Barcodes that's for sure. Seeing as it looks like Howe's trying to offload him I suspect that any loan move will mean the loan club picking up most, if not all, of the tab.
